Aussies thump Proteas

2012-09-30 15:10

Colombo - Shane Watson shone with bat and ball for the fourth match in a row as Australia stepped closer to the World Twenty20 semi-finals with an eight-wicket win over South Africa on Sunday.

Full scorecard

Watson claimed 2-29 and then smashed 70 off 47 balls as Australia restricted the Proteas to 146-5 and then surpassed the total in the 18th over to record their second successive win in group two of the Super Eights.

South Africa, who suffered their second loss, will be knocked out of the tournament if Pakistan beat India in the second match of the double-header later on Sunday.

That result would also see former champions India exit from the competition, leaving Australia and Pakistan as the two semi-finalists from the group even before Tuesday's last round of matches.

Australia lost David Warner in the fourth over, bowled by Morné Morkel, before Watson and Mike Hussey added 99 in 64 balls for the second wicket.

Watson, who was adjudged Man-of-the-Match for the fourth consecutive game, hit eight boundaries and two sixes before being caught in the deep off Robin Peterson.

Mike Hussey remained unbeaten on 45, while Cameron White made 21 not out, including the winning six off Johan Botha over the mid-wicket boundary.

Watson and left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty set up the emphatic win by sharing the five wickets after South Africa were sent in to bat at the Premadasa Stadium.

JP Duminy's 30 was the best score by a top-order batsman as South Africa slipped to 86-5, before Farhaan Behardien and Peterson added 60 from 35 balls for the unbroken sixth wicket.

Behardien made 31 not out and Peterson returned unbeaten on a brisk 32 off 19 balls, the pair taking 28 runs in the final two overs.

Doherty, opening the bowling after replacing seamer Daniel Christian for the match, removed Richard Levi with the third delivery and sent back Jacques Kallis in his second over.

It became 33-3 in the sixth over when Watson struck with the fifth ball as Hashim Amla edged a leg-side catch to wicket-keeper Matthew Wade after making 17.

Doherty, returning for his second spell in the 11th over, had Duminy stumped and Watson dismissed skipper AB de Villiers to reduce the Proteas to 86-5 in the 15th over.

Brief scores:

South Africa 146-5 in 20 overs; Australia 147-2 in 17.4 overs

    Anybody surprised?

      andrew.gallagher.1840 - 2012-09-30 15:22

Considering they've been on tour now for > 3 months, I'm not surprised at all. Must be difficult to be away from friends and family for so long, living out of suitcases and hotel rooms and play your best day in and day out. Doesn't help much in shaking the choker tag though.

      Andre Kritzinger - 2012-09-30 15:23

      Nee, glad nie.

      jacob.ndlovu.3 - 2012-09-30 15:24

No, not at all. I'ts is expected from the SA cricket team. Top team in the world but we can never win a major tournamnet. How many times has this happened now? It's getting ridiculous. We CHOKED AGAIN!!

      Joe - 2012-09-30 15:25

Nobody is forcing them to be there, if they don't want to be there, then they must f@ck off home

      Andre Kritzinger - 2012-09-30 15:31

Part of the job, if they don't like it they should say so and not play. nobody is holding a gun to their heads. Poor excuse.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-30 15:32

They hardly choked. Choking means losing from an overwhelming winning position. They were never in a winning position today. They were soundly beaten by the better team. But they were always in trouble from the start of the tournament. The Zim game aside, the top order failed every time. You're not going to win a tournament if your top three are all off form. For Aus, Shane Watson hit form at the perfect time. That's the way it goes in cricket. Hash was in tremendous form in England and we reaped the benefits. Watson is in similar form for Aus now. What goes around, comes around.

      dino.martin.549 - 2012-09-30 15:37

      Not at all.

      a.j.bosch - 2012-09-30 15:41

Not even close to being surprised

      gnoise.prod - 2012-09-30 15:55

i'm surprised that they played parnel and levi....but with the result not at all

      razz.tazz.9 - 2012-09-30 16:17

CHOKERS.........CHOKERS..........CHOKERS.......what more can you say. They do not have BMT, that is proven over and over. They cannot win when it matters.

      JaredVN - 2012-09-30 16:19

Nope, can't say I'm surprised - unfortunately the Proteas and Papsakke are contenders for the title of the title of biggest chokers in world sport. They sweep everything before them, but when it really matters, they simply cannot win.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:21

@razz.tazz.9 , oh look the piece of garbage South African All Black Supporter. Havent you got toilets to clean boy

      NigelJamesTurner - 2012-09-30 16:22

@Andrew 2711. I don't remember anyone having any sympathy for England when they were in the same predicament in the last world cup. SA has to do what we did - suck it up.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:29

@JaredVN , nothing going on in Danville then. I always laugh when all of a sudden these sloping forehead Bulls supporters come running on. Ha Ha HA

      JaredVN - 2012-09-30 16:41

@Stephen.axtell - what's wrong, dude? Tik run out? Papsak empty? Passion gap hurting, LOSER?

      nicholas.graan - 2012-09-30 16:53

This has nothing to do with "choking". They were outplayed, simple as that. Sure they choked once or twice in the past, but to use the word every time they lose a world cup game is a lazy way of summing up the match. The Aussies were too good.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 17:04

@JaredVN , wow "passion", that is a big word for a Bulls supporter

      JaredVN - 2012-09-30 17:14

Yes we can actually read and write here in Pretoria - unlike you Papsak-supporters, who only take breaks from smoking tik to beat up your wives in your gangster-ridden hovels on the Cape Flats, bwa-ha-ha! But, your tik smoking, papsak-swilling habits aside - pray tell, how many trophies has your choker team won for the past 12 years, LOSER?

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 17:23

@JaredVN , even though WP has won many more trophies than the Vlou Nulle from Moftus I still would not live in that sh ! t hole up north. Its even to risky to go for a dinner with family. Hows those huge fences and paying all that money for security going

      godfrey.welman - 2012-09-30 17:31

@Andrew_82 not me as I have all along questioned AB's ability to captain under pressure. I would still like to know why Johan Botha was fired as captain, considering his record in T20.

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 20:26

I'd like to know what Magic Mickey Arthur has with Oz, cos its working thus far!

  • chris.rooney.79 - 2012-09-30 15:13

We need to get rid of Levi, Parnell and other useless hangers-on!

  • boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:13

i feel bad for AB. he's too good a guy to deal with the choker flak coming his way. smith should be captain. you guys need an a-hole to deal with this.

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 15:33

      I agree with that.

      godfrey.welman - 2012-09-30 17:26

Agree, give the captiancy back to Johan Botha. Can someone explain why Lobbsie did not play

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 17:31

      @godfrey, good question

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-30 17:42

Lopsy doesn't bat. With the top order collapsing regularly, I guess Gary and the selectors wanted more batting. Besides, Lopsy played in England and everybody was spitting fireballs about how rubbish he was. So, like most of the Proteas squad, he's rubbish when he does play, brilliant when he doesn't. It doesn't make any sense to me but it seems to make a lot of sense to News24 readers.

  • martin.botha.5264 - 2012-09-30 15:14

That was poor boys, only Peterson worth mention.

      sedick.gydien - 2012-09-30 16:05

      And Duminy and Steyn....

  • gerhard.bacharach - 2012-09-30 15:14

Well played Shane Watson! Aussies have a quality all rounder in this guy. As for the Proteas, well there isn´t much to say. Our bowlers can´t string 4 decent overs together each and we have batsmen who can´t hit boundaries.

  • boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:14

but looking at it in all fairness, SA were outplayed twice now, both losses can be attributed to a failure in the batting department.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-30 16:01

Yep. It's unfair to blame the bowlers when they're defending low totals. Levi, Kallis, Hash just didn't fire at all in this tournament. AB and Duminy are finishers, they are supposed to do the job that Cameron White did for Aus today. Yet they're both in by the end of the power play and have to build the whole innings. No team can excel when the top order fails. Just look how badly WI were beaten yesterday when the top order failed. They only got to 129. I thought we did quite well to get to 146 after that start.

  • tatsee - 2012-09-30 15:15

    choke-choke...HEEELP,water please...chocke...aahhhhhkkkk-k...

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:19

so now your fate hangs in the balance of the india vs pak match. i want SA to stay but i want my team to knock india out. so i'm going to have to go with pak. SA had 2 opportunities to seal the deal and my loyalty has to shift to my #1 team now. lol

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 15:37

@tatsee -, please explain how this was a choke. I am waiting

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:08

      @tatsee -, I am waiting

      franz.prade.9 - 2012-09-30 16:56

Stephen choking can also mean that when you reach the important stage of a tournament you lose 2 games in a row horribly and will have to come home. Do you think they played anywhere near their ability and what about the decisions made. We lost it they did not win it.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:23

Thank you franz, I agree totally

      tatsee - 2012-09-30 20:34

@Steven, I do not need to define anything to you-you knew waht I meant and judging by ur supposed defination of 'choke' then the Proteas did even worse than choke because they did not even get to the stage were if they lost they would have been called chokers. Is it too much to ask of a fan to scream at their team when they constantly do not deliver?Im am not for mediocrity as you are and what we as fans are asking for from the proteas isnt out of their league-if not then why the hell even bother expecting to win anything? We might as well be Zimbabwe who are glad and gratefull that they were in the World Cup and have no expectation of even getting to the super 8.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 21:58

@tatsee , have you got an English. I dont know what you are mumbling about

      tatsee - 2012-10-01 09:31

@Steve,I am terribly sorry but English is not my mother tongue.

  • ettiene.esterhuizen.7 - 2012-09-30 15:16

Chokers!!! Proteas keep on dissapointing the supporters every time

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:21

not technically a choke, 2 chances to avoid being knocked out. both matches you were outplayed simple as that. no winning positions were created by batting first, both scores were loosing totals. less pressure in super eights. simply outplayed and outclassed twice. thats all.

      bfvillet - 2012-09-30 15:30

afridi go away please go and boast somwhere else

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:36

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:57

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:47

lol your batting flopped. 1st 6 overs you're supposed to attack!! levi is supposed to making 60 ball 100s.

  • glenn.bickford.3 - 2012-09-30 15:17

South Africa will always be chokers in cricket and for some reason the Aussies will always stand up when it counts. Perhaps we need a few more sport psychologists in the team.

  • daleinn - 2012-09-30 15:17

Why did Parnell play in this game? Why not Faf ? Barnes favorite player .. As for Levi... the one hit wonder... we dont have enough depth , we talk about line and lenght and yorkers, but we do none of it. The team needs to go back to switzerland. Our confidence is really lacking in our abilities!

      neil.williams.73594 - 2012-09-30 15:51

Why do you blame Parnell. Why not Kallis or de Villiers. You must be White ne! Typical!

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 16:03

Neil.. The guy wasn't T20 material in England , and certainly has slipped up fielding many a time. If we take him to Australia, Watson will slaughter him! I'm not sure why he was even selected after England? Note I mentioned Levi, so race has nothing to do with it? Performance does, and rightfully so agree Kallis and De Villiers did not perform. I think Behardien may be good to play ODI's

      gnoise.prod - 2012-09-30 16:04

@ williams it has nothing to do with being white/black you douche bag....parnell was the weakest link with levi

  • joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 15:19

@Boom.afridi. Both loses can be attributed to choking!

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:26

@joe. how did you guys choke? you were never in a position of control, batting 1st scores 133 and 148 when a top score was supposed to be 180. now you just have to count your lucky stars on what happens next but seriously in my opinion you guys don't deserve to go through based on these 2 performances.

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 15:31

Not getting the scores of 180 is due to choking. The pressure was on us to score the 180. We knew we had to get 180. You said it as well. Not been able to handle the pressure is called choking.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 15:42

@joe.smit, idiot get a dictionary. Australia are red hot at the moment, no disgrace losing to that team.

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 15:49

Yeah, right. No 1 team in the world, and we choke at every tournament. When are we going to be the \red hot\ team. I've been watching them choke at every tournament since 92. Don't need a dictionary for that, Mate.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:00

@joe, just dont watch sport period. I can see you are one of those unrealistic "supporters". What really gave it away is the whole "choke in every tournament" line. When I saw that I knew what type of person I was dealing with

      lara.vanrooyen.1 - 2012-09-30 16:46

Boom, neither does your team. Now, there's a collapse of note going on. Not even a choke.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 16:52

lara, yes this is usual we expect to collapse batting like this, but if this wicket is turning we have a chance to bowl out the indians. only thing worries me is that the indians are playing 7 batsman today.

  • gerald.smith.9041083 - 2012-09-30 15:39

I can't help but wonder if the "choker" tag isn't subconsciously having an adverse psychological affect on our players which cause them to always stumble in these T20 and ODI tournaments.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-30 15:46

Next World Cup can we please send our guys away knowing that we don't expect them to win. For once let them play without any pressure on them. Baby steps, let's first win a knockout game before focusing on the main prize. Fear we are going to have break this hold on us one step at a time

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 15:48

david they were not choking, they were outplayed both times.

      gerald.smith.9041083 - 2012-09-30 16:07

David. I think the players put pressure on themselves because they are too conscious of the "choker" tag which they are desperate to shake off. As a result they are probably too tense and try too hard and thereby end up failing

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-30 16:19

We didnt choke. But there was definately something happening between the ears these last two games. If we come out guns blazing against India, it will simply show that we were to scared to play our game when it mattered. We have great batters. Our batting flops can only be psychological.\r\n\r\nWe have never won a knockout game. You dont score a century before getting off the mark. All Im saying is lets get over that hurdle before thinking about winning a WC\r\n\r\nand Graeme, we put plenty pressure on our sportsmen

      gerald.smith.9041083 - 2012-09-30 16:34

David. I didn't say we choked. I know what choking means. What I said was that our team have been saddled with this choker tag for many years and they are desperate to shake it off and thus tend to put pressure on themselves. I agree that we as supporters put lots of pressure on our sportsmen but that is only natural as we always want them to win.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-30 17:15

      sandor.l.varga - 2012-09-30 16:18

They are professional sport people and that is the condition what coming with a big pay. They are all ready there, so give it all. Amateurish performance in all department but at least they are really good in Test Cricket

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 21:04

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 16:06

lol probably not but at least he can bowl. levi can't do much else.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 16:07

haha i like that, Levi no.2

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:06

@boom He can "boul" not "bowl' you braindead moron

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-30 17:20

@dowwe. yes he can ''boul'.' whatever you say genius.. lol

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:29

      Just teasing boom

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 20:01

Afridi did score runs today, they put him at 3 ..probably knew he was overdue!

  • nkambazyofaninikuphelidakwa.chiliza - 2012-09-30 16:01

mathematical, net run rate they can go through. Wat mathematics? Get lost chockers i hav 2 admit proteas were outclass in all department wat the hell was wayne, richard doing their poor selection

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 20:54

WTF...is yor name ..is that a conundrum!

  • franz.prade.9 - 2012-09-30 16:04

What is it with our sport. Rugby they kept on picking players and waiting for them to show form with outdated game plan. Rugby has now been forced to change game plan and players and hopefully will now make us proud. Cricket always sticking also to out of form players and rely on losing game plan UNREAL

  • riaan.verster.735 - 2012-09-30 16:06

AB is no captain and Levi is a joke

  • mdu.s.khumalo - 2012-09-30 16:07

    Choking at its best

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:15

WTF, I see my tax money is getting wasted at education again

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:07

@mdu Totally! Second to the Stormers only in world sport

  • zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-09-30 16:07

The only selection which will win you games is on merit. Tsotsobe should be playing and Faf du Plessis should be playing. Morne Morkel and Richard "one game wonder 117 not out" Levi should have been dropped. I knew that we were not good enough with our big mouth. Come on trolls tell me to go and support Bafana bcos they can't win anything idiots!!!

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 19:52

I agree with Lopsy being a far more better bowler than Parnell. He is made to work too hard for a game, and for a place. Faf should have played ahead of levi, at least we would have made some runs. Changes will be made in the next nothing to lose match!

  • nigel.olifaunt - 2012-09-30 16:09

No surprise - their heads were too big, as usual!!!!!

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:16

      Show me quotes please

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:08

@Nigel Agree. They like the Stormers

  • gnoise.prod - 2012-09-30 16:10

i think there should be a Test world cup tournament, maybe we might win something because it seems as if in these limited overs we will never win when it matters

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 19:48

Lol .. Love the thinking.. There was talk about it! Not sure how far ICC is with it.

  • tshepo.maganedisa - 2012-09-30 16:12

    chokers

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:17

If William Shakespeare was around, he would had competition with this eloquence

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:09

@tshepo Totally, and for years now. But nothing beats the 17yr Stormer chokers

  • ndabenhle.g.ngcobo - 2012-09-30 16:13

It was all so good yesterday.

  • Ntutu Dlova - 2012-09-30 16:13

@goodguy, that is a pathetic excuse ,been on tour for 4 wks, these guys r professionals ,they just suck

  • joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 16:16

@Stephen. The Proteas choked, big time, bro.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:26

Sigh I give up. Education is a problem in South Africa and I can see why.

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-09-30 16:34

Ok. I'll stop. They didn't choke. They just lost, again!

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:10

@joe And the Stormers also don't "choke", they just never win

  • NigelJamesTurner - 2012-09-30 16:21

Drop Levi and Parnell. Kallis and Amla open. Duminy 3, AB 4 (or the other way round). . Play A Morkel and either Ontong and Du Plessis down the order.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 16:37

      Agree

      andre.terblanche.5 - 2012-09-30 16:46

Vervang die wp afrigter........ek neem aan dit is wat eloquence beteken?

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 17:00

@andre, no it means getting rid of retarded Bulls players from the Bok team

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 17:11

I think we shouldn't allow the Stormers to play any further rugby. 17yr and counting

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 17:44

@dowwe.duane - come on minimum wage worker I want my chips boy

  • melt.vanaarde - 2012-09-30 16:42

Ek dink die Proteas dink dis `n hengse Jol om in die span te wees. Jy ontvang `n lieflikke salaris en jy sien die wereld,En die belangrikste jy speel soos jy lus kry.

  • terry.burne - 2012-09-30 16:53

Guys - it's only T20 .......it's not like it's proper cricket even, or anything important!

      gnoise.prod - 2012-09-30 17:23

but its a tournament and they choked

  • dofeatsdog - 2012-09-30 16:53

richard levy and wayne parnell failed consistently, why were they still in the team? hoping for a miracle perhaps? Levy cannot even hit a descent cricket shot. he's slogger.....pathetic

  • dofeatsdog - 2012-09-30 16:54

Levy is not capable of a descent cricket shot, he's a slogger and he failed consitently....why is he still in the team at this point?

  • jeanot.beetge - 2012-09-30 17:07

Levi and parnell should have just worn an ausie shirt

  • julianstuart.naidoo - 2012-09-30 17:48

F€$¥ing disgusting!!!!! What's theb exuse now, they deserve the title chokers!!

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 18:01

You deserve the title of "Idiot"

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 18:27

Absolutely Julian. Useless. They should move themselves to Newlands, the head office of world choking

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 19:26

@dowwe, why Newlands, if you talking about losing then its only one place and that is Moftus. Seriously you are thick as pig sh ! t

  • leonard.w.gray - 2012-09-30 18:24

obviously t20 (lottery) cricket is not the proteas ideal format.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 18:26

@leonard What is? They choke in all forms of the game. Nearly as useless as the Stormers

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 19:22

@chip frier dowwe, they are number one where it really counts and that is test cricket you retard

  • Tiaan Liebenberg - 2012-09-30 18:43

@Stephen - the guardian and protector of CSA. Sorry mate, your buddies just can't win when it matters.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 19:00

@Tiaan, another brainless troll, they win when it really matters and that is test cricket. Thats where all the greats are measured.

      Tiaan Liebenberg - 2012-09-30 19:20

Steve o steve, then why enter such an event as the T20 if it doesn't matter? And all the hype of winning a WORLD CUP nogal!

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 19:32

Tiaan Tiaan oh my. Zoom there goes the plane over your head. Never mind I dont have puppets and crayons to explain to you to help you understand. You use the same tired argument with lack of any thought. So winning against the number one side away from home and having to win the match is not winning when it matters. Oh boy cant believe what I am reading.

  • sihle.coco - 2012-09-30 18:59

Its over captain!! (AB de Viliers) Its time to let it go buddy, we all know u suck as a skipper...da proteas were bck 20 yrs ago yet there are ZERO trophies compared to the boks nd Bafana ...so kallis 4 captain!!

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 19:04

@sihle It sounds like the Stormers too, ZERO trophies

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 19:05

They have won the same amount of trophies Bafana has won

  • ron.rielander - 2012-09-30 19:15

How's AB say this morning that they will not choke against AU and IN....WTFN.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-30 19:16

He is nearly as bad as the Stormer captain

  • simon.mwando - 2012-09-30 19:38

Now tell us more AB! \Choke\ continues, who is Levi?

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-30 20:57

Well levi has an IQ of 120, thats 119 more than Spies , zane and Morne Steyn combined

  • nathi.mnisi.7 - 2012-09-30 21:15

Call to ring in the changes, Quinton De Kock in for Levi (allows De Villers to not keep wicket, plus an aggressive batsman in the mould of Gilchrist) Chris Morris in for Albie Morkel or atleast challenging Albie for the spot, Colin Ingram in for Faf Du Plessis, to name but a few and then we build around these guys, huge potential and they still young, obviously after the T20 world cup.... The talent is there in buckets, problem is we are now selecting players on reputation and not based on form

  • justin.dew.94 - 2012-09-30 21:35

@ABdeVilliers17 forgive me if I'm wrong ( and I'm not sure if I want To be ) but I'm not the only person thinking match fixing.....am I?would Explain a lot that's for sure!
