Both sides came into the match having lost their opening pool fixtures, South Africa going down by 26 runs against India and Pakistan suffering a two-wicket defeat by the West Indies.

Both teams made changes, with Umar Amin replacing fellow batsman Asad Shafiq following Pakistan's top-order collapse against the West Indies.

South Africa made two changes -- one enforced -- with late call-up Chris Morris, making his one-day international debut, replacing Morne Morkel after the fast bowler suffered a tournament-ending leg injury against India.

They also brought in left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso in place of seamer Rory Kleinveldt.

South Africa continued to be without Dale Steyn, the strike fast bowler still sidelined by a side strain.
