Gutsy Pakistan hang on

Napier - Pakistan were 128 without loss at stumps on the third day of the third test against New Zealand in Napier on Sunday, trailing by 120 runs.

Facing a massive first innings deficit of 248 when they started their innings before tea, a determined effort from the Pakistan opening pair halved that lead by the time stumps were called.

Salman Butt (66) and Imran Farhat (55) will endeavour on Monday to level the scores before starting to set the target in this deciding encounter.

Earlier, the hosts, resuming on 346/6, were dismissed for 471 - mostly due to Danish Kaneria, who, with a bit more assistnace from the increasingly flattening pitch, bagged 7/168.

Daniel Vettori finished on 134 and Daryl Tuffey beat his previous highest test score of 35 by a country mile - he was unbeaten on 80.

The morning session belong to the abovementioned two batsmen.

The New Zealand skipper played cuts and drives without much risk, and it eventually needed a stunning fielding effort to dismiss him. Vettori drove one well to the left of short extra cover where Umar Akmal flung himself to hold on to the catch.

Tuffey - though a little bit shaky against Kaneria - played fluently against the seamers and did not appear to be bothered by the shorter delivery.

On reaching his maiden test half-century, he confidently produced a shot of pure class against Kaneria, driving a flighted ball past the startled bowler to the long-on boundary.

After Vettori's departure, Tim Southee stayed long enough at the crease to help Tuffey add another 62 runs before Kaneria mopped up the tail.

Teams:

Pakistan: Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Faisal Iqbal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf (capt), Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal (wk), Mohammad Aamer, Umar Gul, Mohammad Asif, Danish Kaneria
