Cape Town - Former Proteas spinner Paul "Gogga" Adams is reportedly set to be announced as the new coach of the Cape Cobras franchise on Tuesday.
The job was left vacant after Richard Pybus resigned in March.
Adams, 35, was on the shortlist with Salieg Nackerdien (Western Province's amateur coach), Barney Mohamed (Boland's amateur coach), Rob Walter (Proteas fitness coach), and Andy Moles (former New Zealand and Free State coach).
According to Die Burger it recently became a two-horse race between Adams and Nackerdien but Adams's experience as an international cricketer is what apparently counted in his favour.
The Western Cape Cricket (WCC) association will announce the new coach at midday on Tuesday.
Adams's only notable coaching experience is that of coach of the Western Cape Cricket academy and an assistant to Vincent Barnes at the Impi in the recent domestic T20 Challenge.
And he's sure to have a tough task on his hands at the Cobras.
They were a divided team towards the end of last season, which led to a disastrous T20 campaign and the subsequent resignation of Pybus.
Pybus said he was undermined in his job by a range of issues to do with WCC CEO Andre Odendaal and the franchise.
His resignation came as a surprise at the time since the team had won three trophies out of a possible six in the past two seasons under him.
However, even though his effectiveness as a coach had been widely lauded, a range of issues which had been simmering within the Cobras squad led to a player delegation meeting with Odendaal.
These issues are believed to include what some players termed “questionable selections”, not giving young local players opportunities and the granting of a new two-year contract to captain Justin Kemp, while some believed he had not been performing consistently enough.
