Gandalf to umpire charity T20

Wellington - Tana Umaga and Marc Ellis will join Gandalf, the Gladiator and some of New Zealand cricket's biggest names at Wellington's Basin Reserve on Sunday.

According to the Stuff website, the former All Blacks were confirmed on Monday in the star-studded line-ups for the earthquake charity Twenty20 match with a Hollywood connection. Actor Sir Ian McKellen will be match referee and Russell Crowe will coach the Canterbury Legends XI, to be captained by organiser Stephen Fleming and featuring Australian spin legend Shane Warne.

Former New Zealand captain Fleming said there had been a tremendous response. Recent internationals Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Adam Parore and Dion Nash will make up a strong Canterbury XI while Richard Hadlee was included in the 12 but may take the field only briefly and instead run the collection bucket.

The Wellington Legends XI, to be captained by Martin Crowe, includes former heroes of the Basin such as Bruce Edgar, Ewen Chatfield, Andrew Jones, Gavin Larsen and Roger Twose.

"I'm looking forward to going up against the genius," Fleming said of Crowe. "My first tactical move was to secure Russell Crowe as coach and he [Martin Crowe, his cousin) is not happy."

Fleming hoped to fill the Basin and said the crowd would be treated to an entertaining and competitive match which would raise money for the Christchurch earthquake relief fund.

Tickets go on sale today through Ticketek, at $20 for adults, $10 for children and $40 for a family. Fleming said the 13th man spots in each team would be auctioned on Trade Me this week.
