Birmingham - Sachin Tendulkar's latest bid to become the first batsman to score 100 international hundreds ended in unlucky fashion when he was run-out backing up against England on Saturday.
India great Tendulkar looked in good touch making 40, with eight fours, on the fourth day of the third Test here at Edgbaston.
But his innings ended when India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni drove at Graeme Swann and the off-spinner deflected the ball into the bowler's end stumps, with replays confirming non-striker Tendulkar had just failed to make his ground.
Tendulkar's exit left India in desperate trouble at 89 for six in their second innings and contemplating a huge defeat that would give England both an unbeatable 3-0 lead in this four-match series and see Andrew Strauss's side replace the tourists at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table.
'The Little Master's' 51 Test centuries and 48 in one-day internationals are both world records and the 38-year-old number four received, as has been the case all series, a standing ovation when he walked to the crease in what could well be Tendulkar's last tour of England.
In India's first innings Tendulkar managed just one before he was caught at third slip off fast-medium bowler Stuart Broad.
Tendulkar's scores this series are 34 and 12 in a 196-run first Test defeat at Lord's, 16 and 56 in the 319-run second Test reverse at Trent Bridge and one and 40 at Edgbaston.
That gave him a modest series tally of 159 runs at an average of 26.5.
