Plunkett joins England squad

Potchefstroom - Durham paceman Liam Plunkett was called up by England on Tuesday as injury cover for the first two one-day internationals (ODIs) against South Africa.

England acted after seamer James Anderson (knee), all-rounders Stuart Broad (shoulder) and Paul Collingwood (back), spinner Graeme Swann (side) and batsman Alastair Cook (back) missed Tuesday's warm-up match against South Africa 'A' in Potchefstroom.

"Liam is over here anyway and will join us on Wednesday night as cover for the first two ODIs (on Friday and Sunday)," media manager James Avery told Reuters.

"By Monday we are hopeful a couple of the bowlers will have regained full fitness and then Liam won't have to travel with us to Cape Town (for the third game). But if those players don't come through Liam can stay with us."

The first ODI is in Johannesburg, with the second match in Centurion.

Plunkett, who has played 27 ODIs, is already in the country training with England's high performance squad.

The 24-year-old had already been included in England's squad for the four Tests which follow the ODI series.

"We expect all the injured players to make steady progress," said Avery. "Stuart Broad, however, is in a lot of doubt for Friday and Sunday."
