England hit back before lunch

Dhaka - Tamim Iqbal hammered a rapid fire 85 before England struck back with two quick wickets in the second and final Test against Bangladesh on Saturday.

The hosts were strongly placed at 119-1 before reaching 139-3 at lunch on the opening day, losing left-handed Tamim and debutant Jahurul Islam in the space of nine deliveries.

Tamim, who offered two chances in a 71-ball knock, put the England attack to the sword in a superb exhibition of strokeplay on an easy-paced wicket. He cracked one six and 13 fours.

The opener added 53 for the first wicket with Imrul Kayes (12) and 66 for the next with Junaid Siddique, who was unbeaten on 25 at the break.

Tamim looked set to achieve the rare feat of scoring a century in the opening session before being caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior while attempting to sweep debutant off-spinner James Tredwell.

Only Australians Victor Trumper, Charles Macartney and Don Bradman, and Pakistan's Majid Khan have scored a century in the opening session of a Test.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann claimed his only victim of the day when he trapped Jahurul leg-before.

Tamim offered a sharp chance on 11 when he slashed paceman Tim Bresnan in the day's second over, but Paul Collingwood failed to hold on to it at second slip after getting his hand to it.

He was on 35 when let off again, this time skipper Alastair Cook dropping him at mid-on off paceman Stuart Broad.

The England fast bowler, however, got a wicket in the same over when he had Kayes superbly caught by Steven Finn, who ran in from mid-off and dived to his right to latch on to the uppish drive.

Bresnan was replaced with Swann after conceding 23 in his opening three overs, but runs continued to flow as the hosts raced to 50 off just eight overs.

Tamim greeted Swann with two fours in the bowler's opening over before smashing him for three boundaries and a six over long-on off successive deliveries to complete his sixth Test half-century off 34 balls.

England made one change from the side that won the opening Test by 181 runs in Chittagong on Tuesday, replacing batsman Michael Carberry with Tredwell.

The hosts brought in Shafiul Islam and Jahurul in place of paceman Shahadat Hossain and batsman Aftab Ahmed.
