England down young Proteas

London - The England under-19 side's Daniel Bell-Drummond hit 68 runs to lead his team to a four-wicket victory over South Africa which made the seven match series level up to 1-1 in the second England Youth ODI Series in Northampshire on Monday.

England won the toss and chose to field first on yet another bleak summer's day.

Quinton de Kock and his captain, Keaton Jennings put up a first wicket partnership of 48 runs before Jennings was dismissed by Jamie Overton for 12.

De Kock starred in yet another strong partnership, this time of 73 runs with fellow KES boy Shaylin Pillay. He scored 50 off 56 balls and was in the end bowled out by Sam Wood for 69 runs, the highest run scorer for the South Africans.

The South African batting was just not strong enough against a re-energised England bowling attack headed up by Aneesh Kapil who tore apart the tail and taking four wickets and a run out leaving them all out for 219.

England's first five overs were interrupted by rain, after which Bell-Drummond picked up from his good form in their previous match and cemented his position as the opening batsman for England. He held down the fort as England lost the two early wickets of Sam Kelsall and Adam Rossington, who were both out for a duck due to a superb over by Rabian Engelbrecht.

Bell-Drummond's 90-run third wicket partnership with Wood revived the team's chances and they took advantage of their lead.

England were 99/2 when Prenelan Subrayen got the breakthrough and dismissed Wood for 42 runs but it was the 73-run fifth wicket partnership between Ben Foakes (46) and captain Adam Ball (42) that put England firmly in the winning lane.

South Africa failed to take the wickets necessary to end the match and in the end it was Kapil who scored the match winning runs.

England reached the target with 23 balls to spare.
