Donald considers India offer

Johann de Jager

Bloemfontein – Allan Donald has said that he will consider an offer to become India’s bowling coach, but has dismissed premature reports about it as sensationalist.

The former Proteas bowler’s name popped up in India as possible successor for Venkatesh Prasad, who was dismissed in October.

Donald says he has been constantly phoned from India ever since and that the story has become tiresome.

According to reports, informal talks have been held with Donald. This apparently happened when he was working as a commentator during the ICC Champions League.

Donald, 43, admitted that he had earlier put out feelers about possible work for one of the teams in the Indian Premier League, but that the latest reports are not entirely accurate.

Donald immediately briefed his agent, Stephan Weyers, of the matter. They have asked for a correction to an inaccurate website report.

Donald confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had not yet come back to him with any offer.

However, the man formerly known as White Lightning, who has legendary status in India after his first appearance there yielded a five-wicket haul, will certainly be prepared to listen if the BCCI calls.

“You’d be stupid not to consider it and I will be interested if they want to talk,” said Donald.

Donald was England’s bowling coach in the first Twenty20 world championship tournament in South Africa in 2007.

He resigned last year as Warwickshire’s bowling coach, but did not get the job as head coach of the Eagles.

Donald’s former team-mate Gary Kirsten is India’s coach.

South Africa will play two Tests and three one-day games in India after the series against England.
