Bloemfontein. – The South African cricket team’s bowlers dominated Bangladesh earlier this year. That was in the Tigers’ own backyard where the ball does not generate as much pace as in South Africa.
South Africa and Bangladesh start the first of two Tests on Wednesday. From the Proteas’ perspective it can be viewed as a “training run” before the tour to Australia. The Tigers’ batsmen struggled to come to terms with the raw pace of Dale Steyn in the limited overs matches and can expect to be on the back foot again in the Tests.
While South Africa are expected to pepper the Tigers with bouncers, they will have to caution against this becoming a habit before they play the Aussies. Former Proteas bowler Allan Donald believes that will be playing into the Aussies’ hands.
“It would be like bowling bouncers at Matthew Hayden,” he said. He warned South Africa should not get carried away by what it has achieved against the Tigers because any other side in the world can trouble their batsmen.
Donald believes the best tactic would be to try and draw the batsmen forward. He is concerned that the bowlers may struggle to achieve the right length if they bowl too many bouncers now.
Nico Pretorius, stadium manager at the Outsurance Oval, said he would take some of the grass off the pitch on Monday. He will check again on Tuesday whether it’s necessary to make it a little shorter.
