Domestic cricket gets shake-up

Cape Town - Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday announced important changes to the conditions of play for the domestic professional and amateur competitions for the 2011/12 season.

The first-class season officially starts on Thursday with the first round of the SuperSport Series competition. The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras and the Chevrolet Warriors have byes as they are taking part in the Nokia Champions League T20 in India.

The matches this weekend feature the bizhub Highveld Lions against the Sunfoil Dolphins at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium and the Nashua Titans at home to the Chevrolet Knights at SuperSport Park.

There are also four matches in the CSA Provincial three-day competition starting on Thursday. The most significant change is that the mandatory 85 over declaration rule has been abolished and mirrors the SuperSport Series conditions with the hours of play being 7 hours per day.

Some of the more significant changes affect the 50 overs competitions to bring them into line with the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations that take effect from the start of October. These include using two new balls (one from each end) per innings and doing away with the mandatory ball change after 34 overs; taking both the batting and bowling power plays between the 16th and 40th overs (the initial power play during the first 10 overs remains in place) and allowing fielders to appeal for “obstructing the field” if a batsman noticeably changes the angle of his run between wickets without cause to avoid being run out.

This latter change applies to all formats.

An important change to the four-day and three-day competitions is that floodlights will no longer be used at any of the venues in the event of bad light. Play will also be extended at the luncheon interval by 30 minutes (similar to the tea interval rule) when the batting team has lost 9 wickets and both sessions can also be extended by the same amount of time if requested by either captain and in the opinion of the umpires a result can be achieved.

Another important change that affects all formats is that runners will no longer be allowed for the batting side.

In an operational change the CSA Match Referee in consultation with both coaches will in future be responsible for naming the Man-of-the-Match in the SuperSport Series.
