Canberra - Chris Gayle smashed the highest ever individual Cricket World Cup score of 215 as West Indies beat Zimbabwe by 73 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in Canberra on Tuesday.

Gayle clubbed a record-equalling 16 sixes while sharing a record ODI partnership of 372 with Marlon Samuels (133 not out) at Manuka Oval.

In reply, chasing a revised target of 363 off 48 overs following a brief shower, Zimbabwe were 289 all out.

Gayle's score was the third highest in all ODIs behind Rohit Sharma's 264 and Virender Sehwag's 219.
