Pallekele - New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was carried from the field after injuring his right knee during the Cricket World Cup Group A match against Pakistan on Tuesday.

Vettori made a valiant attempt to catch Kamran Akmal's uppish drive but landed hard on the ground at mid-on as the ball went past for four. Vettori, a spinner, is one of New Zealand's most important bowlers.

The New Zealand captain was carried off the field by the team's support staff.

Pakistan slipped to 26-4 in the eighth over in pursuit of 303-run target.
