Chandigarh is a union territory of India, that serves as the capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana. The name Chandigarh translates as "The Fort of Chandi", and was coined from an ancient temple called Chandi Mandir, devoted to the Hindu Goddess Chandi, present in the city's vicinity. It is occasionally referred to as The City Beautiful, and includes the smaller incorporated cities of Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur.

As the first planned city of India, Chandigarh is known internationally for its architecture and urban planning, and is home to numerous architectural projects of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Matthew Nowicki, and Albert Mayer. The city has also emerged recently as the cleanest city in India.

As a modern, purpose planned and built city, Chandigarh has excellent rickshaw, bus and rail transport throughout the city. Taxis are commonplace, and the city has the highest concentration of cars in India, so traffic can be a problem.

Chandigarh has gardens across the entire city, and is home to world famous Rock Garden, built from waste items. Its most famous garden is the Rose Garden, with others including the Garden of Annuals, Fragrance Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Chrysanthemum Garden, Botanical Garden and Shanti Kunj.
