Pure Proteas not SA enough

Johannesburg - The SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) on Wednesday called for an "urgent meeting" with Cricket South Africa to explain why so few local manufacturers were used for the Proteas' gear at the Cricket World Cup.

"For the sake of the national cricket team, in order not to increase the burden of pressure on them and cause them to choke, and since we did not want to be blamed for such an eventuality, Sactwu did not publicly pursue the matter when it became apparent that Cricket SA was not adhering to its commitments made at our meeting of 30 September 2010," said Sactwu general secretary Andre Kriel in a statement.

"Instead we chose to wait until a suitable time to address the matter with you. That time has arrived, since our team has regrettably been knocked out of the World Cup."

Sactwu said cricket authorities failed to stick to undertakings that were made last year.

"You also undertook certain commitments to increase the levels of local manufacturing for Proteas World Cup-related clothing products and advised that you would revert to us with progress in this regard.

"We have subsequently not heard from you, despite reminder correspondence sent by my office," said Kriel.

"We call for a further urgent meeting with you in which we expect Cricket SA to account for this situation and make real, concrete commitments to local procurement."
