2010-10-13 20:27

Full name: Abraham Benjamin de Villiers

Born: February 17, 1984, Pretoria

Current age: 26 years

Major teams: South Africa, Africa XI, Delhi Daredevils, Northerns Titans

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm medium

Fielding position: Wicketkeeper

Well on his way to cementing his place as one of the new South African greats, 2010 ODI player of the year AB de Villiers brings an enthusiasm and technical precision to the South African team which has at times been lacking in the middle order batting department.

Innovative shots, incredibly fast hands and the ability to accumulate runs over long innings have given AB a remarkable Test career already, and a growing reputation in ODIs. He is an incredibly busy cricketer, and his 101 ODIs have already brought him 3016 runs at a respectable average of 43.56. A healthy strike rate of 89.41 shows his ability to manufacture singles and runs where other batsmen struggle, which will be exceptionally useful on the slower sub-continental wickets.

Apart from his exceptional batting talents, AB has re-written the rules on fielding ability, surpassing even his South African predecessor Jonty Rhodes in terms of agility and reach. He has recently donned the wicketkeeping gloves for South Africa, and although his is still learning the trade, he will undoubtedly be as proficient at this as he is everything else.
