Erasmus to umpire quarter

New Delhi - South Africa's Marais Erasmus has been appointed to umpire in the Cricket World Cup quarter-final between India and Australia in his first match since adjudicating when Ricky Ponting stood his ground until he was given out in the defending champions' Group A loss to Pakistan.

South African Erasmus seemed to be the only person on the field who missed the Australian captain's edge behind, originally deciding it was not out.

That led to animated appeals from the Pakistani players and a decision referral in which the TV umpire overruled and gave Ponting out.

Ponting's dismissal for 19 sparked a collapse which led to Australia's first loss at a World Cup since 1999, ending a 34-match unbeaten run.

Ponting said he knew he was out, but insisted he had every right to wait for the umpire to signal, sparking criticism and debate over when to walk.

Erasmus will stand in Thursday's match at Ahmedabad with Ian Gould of England.

Umpires for the other quarter-finals: Billy Bowden and Steve Davis for Pakistan vs. West Indies in Dhaka on Wednesday; Aleem Dar and Rod Tucker for South Africa vs. New Zealand in Dhaka on Friday; and Billy Doctrove and Simon Taufel for Sri Lanka vs. England at Colombo on Saturday.

Umpires and match referees for the semifinals and the April 2 final will be announced later in the tournament.
