Chittagong - Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott hit half centuries Friday to steer England out of early trouble before six wickets fell for 42 runs to limit their side to 225 all in a Cricket World Cup group match against Bangladesh.
England slipped to 53-3 off 16.4 overs after being put into bat but Morgan put on 109 for the fourth wicket with Jonathan Trott, who hit a laboured 67 for his fourth 50 in five World Cup innings.
Having arrived in Bangladesh just three days ago as an injury replacement for Kevin Pietersen, Morgan hit 63 to show why England wanted him in its original 15-man squad before he was ruled out with a broken finger.
But Bangladesh hit back to raise hopes of the win it needs to reach the quarterfinals. Naeem Islam finished with 2-29 from eight overs, while fellow spinners Abdur Razzak and captain Shakib Al Hasan also took two wickets each.
Bangladesh's spinners contributed 33 overs to the 49.4 bowled, but England has only Graeme Swann in its lineup as a specialist slow bowler.
Even so, the total at Chittagong's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium could still be a challenging one for a side whose batsmen collapsed to 58 last time out against the West Indies.
England successfully defended 171 against South Africa on Sunday and must now defend another low total. It could have been much lower with Matt Prior, Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell back in the dressing room, but left-hander Morgan took on the spinners and picked the gaps in the field with seeming ease.
Morgan stroked seven fours on his way to his 11th half century, to just one by Trott in his 50.
His 72-ball innings came to an end when he swept Naeem into the hands of the diving Imrul Kayes at deep square leg. And it was 182-5 when Trott hit Shakib Al Hasan high to Junaid Siddique at long off.
Ravi Bopara made just 16 before holing out to Naeem off Razzak and Graeme Swann, coming in at No. 7, hit Shakib into the air straight back to the bowler for 11.
Rubel Hossain got rid of Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad was bowled by paceman Shafiul Islam and Paul Collingwood was run out with two balls left.
The decision by Shakib to field first paid off as England lost openers Prior and Strauss for the addition of just 39 runs in the first 11 overs.
Shafiul Islam almost found an outside edge with his first two deliveries against Prior, whose promotion to a role in which he experienced little success in Australia ended with a bizarre dismissal prompted by some quick thinking by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
Mushfiqur took the bails off to attempt a stumping off a wide from Abdur Razzak's first ball. Prior was safe but took a step out of his crease, so Mushfiqur ripped a stump from the ground for a quick second stumping - sending Prior on his way for 15 following a lengthy referral from the umpire.
Strauss followed soon after for 18 with an attempted cut off Razzak to Junaid at first slip, and things got even worse for England when Bell tamely deflected Mahmuduallah Riad's fourth ball to Naeem Islam at midwicket.
Trott was almost run out at the non striker's end on 25 when he was slow to set off for Morgan's call for a quick single. A direct hit from Naeem at midwicket would have left him short, but Mushfiqur had to gather first and got the stumps off just as Trott's bat grazed the line.
After angering its fans with its nine-wicket loss to the West Indies, Bangladesh must now beat England for the first time in Bangladesh to have any real chance of progress to the quarterfinals. England can clinch a place in the next round alongside Group B leader India with victory.
