Cricket saviour of SWC stadia?

Moses Mabhida Stadium (Gallo)

Durban - Cricket could emerge as an unlikely saviour of World Cup soccer stadiums with the decision by Cricket South Africa (CSA) to stage a Twenty20 international at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

South Africa underwent a massive building programme in an effort to make the country ready to host the month-long soccer extravaganza with the construction of five new stadiums while a further five underwent varying degrees of renovation.

There are concerns that following the tournament that concluded with Spain lifting the trophy for the first time on Sunday, the stadiums would become obsolete.

However, the decision to host a Twenty20 match between South Africa and India at the Durban venue next January could open the way for other soccer stadiums to be utilised in a similar capacity.

"The game between South Africa and India is important for us to be able to take cricket to everyone," CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said.

"We would like to utilise some of the soccer stadiums that were used during the World Cup to help us in that effort," he said.

Majola added that South Africa could benefit by the use of more stadiums to extend the domestic cricket season with an eye on setting up its own version of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament.

"We can't set up our own IPL because currently there is no window," he explained.

"We would like to see if it is possible to play at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg and a few other soccer grounds because we would be able to extend our season into August but it is important to see what the viability of the grounds are."

Currently, the Durban stadium falls short of meeting the International Cricket Council's (ICC) minimum playing area requirement but Majola said that the addition of an athletics track would help to increase the space available.

Majola added that if the ground could reach ICC playing regulations, the CSA would look into gaining full Test status for the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

In a clear indication that more cricket could be played at the ground, the CSA has decided to build a permanent pitch at the ground as opposed to using a drop-in one for January's match.

"Not all grounds can be used for Tests but for Twenty20 internationals, which attract huge grounds, it would certainly be an option," Majola said.

Mike Sutcliffe, Durban's municipal manager, said that the staging of the international was part of the city's long-term plan to make the stadium sustainable.

"When it became clear that we would have to build a new stadium we developed a strategy called '2010 and beyond'," Sutcliffe said.

"Our first objective was to develop an iconic stadium that would make for a great soccer ground, nut we also had to break into other markets and Twenty20 cricket is a perfect sport for us," he explained.

Durban already has a cricket test venue, the 25,000 capacity Kingsmead cricket ground, but it is dwarfed by the 62,760-seat Moses Mabhida Stadium.

When we get older............we will be stronger...... What's needed are great ideas from all you awesome South Africans!!! Rassie Erasmus is already advanced with an "IPL" version of rugby. Now cricket T/20. What about a Tri-Nations in soccer with IBSA countries, or a North/South championship? Go to http://supportsasports.ning.com and blog there so that i can submit some of your brilliant ideas to the authorities. Any entrapreneurs out there?

Its about making it feasible to keep the stadium up and running. There will be fixed costs that need to be covered and everytime the stadium is used there are also costs incurred to rehabilitate the pitch. It does not make sense for them to have a PSL or Div 1 match that will only 1/4 fill the stadium. Cricket is huge, and correct me if I'm wrong but to date I have not seen half empty stadiums during 20/20 matches. At least now people won't have to numb their rear ends sitting on the grass at Kingsmead to enjoy the game.

I see from the comments that there is a lot of negativity. If SA brings in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan it is guaranteed to fill up any stadium no matter who they are playing. The asian teams are hugely supported throughout the world and the games in SA will definitely be an almost sell out. But if they put NZ v ENG then we are asking for trouble cos very little people in SA support these teams. So they need to mix and mingle and they will make their money. Good Luck CSA - lets see if u can pull this one off.

Rugby you go for the GAME. Cricket you do go for the game but you bring the wags and kids with to enjoy the DAY. The DAY involves significant more beer than at the GAME. I want to go to watch cricket but then I am forced to drink Castle at a ridiculous price and have to run the risk of some moronic cop trying to put me in jail for a mild case of DUI. Force Castle to allow some variety in the drinks, price it normally and then organise some coach services (we'll pay for god's sake since we are sparing petrol and parking fees) so that the police can go catch real criminals instead of harrassing tax paying citizens.

Is the field really big enough for a cricket game? I don't think so! unless they're playing a junior school match.
Nthlarhi7/15/2010 9:02 AM
You are all mororns. Do you realise that this country has got soccer teams involved in the PSL and 1st division? Durban alone has three PSL teams which will use Mabhida stadium. Cape town has three teams as well, Gauteng, plenty of them there. In the past soccer teams had to use rugby stadia because there were not enough stadia which could accommodate the PLS. It's not only the SWC, there's soccer in this country as well. Rugby and cricket to save 2010 stadium my foot!

ANC with Mike knows how to spend Ratepayers money. We the minority of ratepayers will have to fit the bill while millions of non-ratepayers enjoy the benefit.

So now suddenly the sports that had to conform to FIFA's stupid rules (rugby and cricket - real sport) should become the saviour of all the white elephants around the country. Where is FIFA's help now?
Geeman7/14/2010 11:10 PM
If they put an athletics track in, wouldn't the playing area be smaller?

Great news,Cricket SA is a pillar of Unity and Mabhida stadium has great atmosphere,i hope they dont forego Kingsmead,it has grt8 memories, however least is said about Polokwane,Nelspruit and Cape Town stadia's, and the management companies appointed dont seem to have future plans.None the less good work CSA.

Hi guys. I am reading your comments, and its so bad to see, that in South Africa, its so hard for a cricket to fill a stadium of 50,000 capacity, whereas, for Rugby match at Soccer city, they are expecting it to be sold out. So, does it mean, that Rugby is far far more popular then cricket in SA. Please answer me, as i am furious to know.

One thing Mike Suckcliffe is good at that is BS. Mike you never though of anything but Rugby as an alternative for the stadium. Football does not attact that many visitors. You went as far as to investigate if it was possible to use a strong arm tactic by cancelling the Kindsmead lease to force the Sharks to use your ANC black elephant. What of the remote parking. Are you going to waste valuable land, standing idle, waiting to fill the stadium. Then what if the stadium fills then you do not have the infrustructure to make it work.
greg7/14/2010 4:58 PM
Cricket? Four men and a dog attend cricket matches. They cant even fill the current stadiums.
blake7/14/2010 4:21 PM
simple fact is that the durban cant even full their 25,000 capacity Kingsmead cricket ground, never mind 60 000. simple fact is that 25% of the people that went to durban games were from Jhb. only way that stadium will survive is if the sharks move there...but they wont. lets not even talk about PE that battled to sell out WC matches

What a BRILLIANT idea!!!!! Hosting cricket T20 and even ODI in the stadia's around South Africa. The venues are there so put them to good use. I am sure the stadia will be full....I for one would definately love to see that happen.
Good idea7/14/2010 3:44 PM
They should start a tri-nations championship between SA, NZ and Aus like the rugby. All 3 of these countries could benefit from more exposure, and it might put all of them in the right direction towards the next world cup, and thus they should be able to use the venues more often for the purpose they were built for in the first place.
@Pitch7/14/2010 3:41 PM
Remember they played a soccer friendly at Wanderers, so I don't see an issue with that!
Bullet7/14/2010 3:21 PM
These idiots (SAFA) were warned, but they did not listen. These stadiums that cost us tax payers billions will become white elephants. If rugby does not use them then the race card will be played. All the anc circus and their clowns were interested in is lining their pockets with the over charged booty from over inflated tender/contracts from their BEE and AA buddies. They are laughing all the way to the bank. Makes one think how much passed under the table for the SWC and who got what……….
Jurgens7/14/2010 3:18 PM
@Storm Voort, firstly its a Pro20 game, attracts normally a full house at kingsmead, secondly it's India against SA in Durban, nough said, if not full it will be very close to, weather permitting, think it's a good idea and see more positives than the negatives that you are seeing
pitch??7/14/2010 2:48 PM
so they will stick a pitch in the middle of the ground? surely thats then not conducive to soccer or rugby??? i know grounds are like that in high school and so on but surely not at international and national level??!!!
Gramps7/14/2010 2:38 PM
Where on earth does CSA think they are going to find enough fans to fill even 10% of that staduium with the type of rubbish T20 and ODI cricket that Biff's Babboons dish up? Totally delusional idea!
KOOS7/14/2010 2:38 PM
Cant the beautiful game support the SWC stadia? WTF
rambo7/14/2010 2:37 PM
excellent idea! well done to mike & gang. reduce ticket prices so that more people will attend cricket/rugby matches.
farmer7/14/2010 2:36 PM
I agree, they can't fill Kingmead for an International.Panic has set in ?? Kings Park and Kingsmead forever!!!!!
Honest view7/14/2010 2:27 PM
Yes, I suggest the PSL should have to cover the costs the stadiums can't recoup. Also if we get the ticket spent by government officials back from their pay that could also go some way. Other than that can I say the SWC was awesome and SA did so well in hosting it and the stadiums are stunning. We are proudly South African!
Graig7/14/2010 2:13 PM
Would this not take revenue away from the current cricket stadiums, and what would local cricketing associations stand to gain from using the SWC grounds? It all seems a bit desperate and not very well thought out. We are however talking about CSA here and where ever they seem to go there is never a financial scandal too far behind?
Rita7/14/2010 2:09 PM
I think this would be great seeing that international cricket is much more played in this country than soccer. Not sure if they will get a capacity crowd though but the money will definitely help with maintaining the stadiums provided they keep the tickets reasonably priced. I will definitely go for that game in Dbn if it happens.
Storm Voort7/14/2010 1:47 PM
What are they thinking of now!!!???? There really isn't enough support in South Africa (for test matches anyway) to hold matches in a 60000+ seater stadium. I doubt if one day internationals will even be able to pull that kind of crowd. I think its clear as daylight that the "powers that be" are starting to panic about the stadiums and how they will be able to maintain and manage them......Now cricket and rugby suddenly has to come to the rescue. Not cricket or rugby's fault soccer can't maintain its own stadiums......
