Corrie deserves a fair chance

Christo Buchner

Johannesburg – Corrie van Zyl deserves a fair chance to establish himself as South Africa’s cricket coach.

Morné van Wyk, who is the new captain of the Eagles and has played under Van Zyl for the Bloemfontein-based side for years, views the caretaker coach of the national team as a “natural leader who knows exactly what he is doing”.

“Corrie has a wonderful work ethic and you’ll have to search far and wide to find a more hard-working coach. He is also a person of integrity and therefore commands a lot of respect among the players,” Van Wyk said on Monday at the launch of the season’s Pro20 series.

“He is very consistent and you always know exactly where you stand with him. The players will appreciate that about him.”

Jonty Rhodes, who represented sponsors Standard Bank, also commented on Van Zyl’s work ethic.

“The amount of work that he put in when he was assistant coach with Graeme Ford was amazing,” said Rhodes, who was involved with Van Zyl as player and coach.

“His experience will be of immense value to South African cricket at this sensitive stage. He is someone who will create an atmosphere in the team in which every player will develop.

“It is also important at this stage to have a coach that is a bowling expert.”

Van Wyk added: “When you take a coaching job, you know that it will only be temporary. Much is said of Corrie’s discipline, but it is a very broad term. What he will achieve with discipline is to forge the team into a tight unit.”
