Delhi rout Cape Cobras

Cape Town - Dirk Nannes took three wickets to lead the Delhi Daredevils to a 30-run victory in their Champions League Twenty20 match against the Cape Cobras at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Monday.

Delhi, after being put into bat, scored 114 for six before the Cobras were routed for just 84 in 18.3 overs, the tournament’s lowest total.

Left-arm speedster Nannes bowled with pace and aggression, on a pitch which offered very little bounce, to claim figures of three for 19 off four overs as the Cobras lost their last seven wickets for just 40 runs.

The 33-year-old Nannes, who shared new ball duties, claimed the wicket of Andrew Puttick in his first spell before he ripped through the Cobras’ lower-order by bowling Ryan Canning and Claude Henderson with consecutive deliveries.

Nannes received superb support from Delhi’s slow bowlers with leg spinner Amit Mishra and off-spinners Tillakaratne Dilshan and Yogesh Nagar picking up two wickets apiece.

Henry Davids top-scored for the Cobras with 22 runs off 29 balls but his dismissal, run out thanks to a direct hit from Pradeep Sangwan at backward point, heralded the start of the Cobras’ collapse.

Only two other batsmen, JP Duminy (14) and Vernon Philander (12), reached double figures for the South African side.

Earlier, the Cobras made a good start in the field as they reduced Delhi to two for four inside two overs.

Seamer Rory Kleinveldt was responsible for the early breakthrough as he picked up the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Tillakaratne Dilshan in his first over.

Kleinveldt returned match figures of two for 31 off four overs while off spinner Justin Ontong picked up two for eight off his single over.

Pacemen Monde Zondeki and Francois Plaatjies both maintained a good line and length with both men allowing just 13 runs off their respective four overs.

Owais Shah top-scored for Delhi with 39 not out off 38 balls while Dinesh Karthik (23) and Manoj Tiwary (19) combined for the biggest partnership of the innings as their third-wicket stand produced 40 runs.

Tiwary fell when he was bowled by left-arm spinner Claude Henderson while Karthik was run out after he and Shah made a mess of taking a single to Puttick at midwicket.

Despite the defeat the Cobras move on to the semifinals were they will meet Trinidad & Tobago in Hyderabad on Thursday.
