Johannesburg - Some of South Africa’s top celebrities and their children came out in support of the ‘Get into Action. Get into KFC Mini-Cricket’ campaign launch at the Wanderers on Saturday, and they all agreed on the importance of encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle for their little ones.
Socialite and businesswoman Uyanda Mbuli, who brought her eight-year-old son Landa to the launch, said: “The mini-cricket initiative is a very positive initiative especially for young kids who want to know more about the sport. I think it’s important to develop a child’s love for the game from an early age. My son plays cricket at school and it’s nice for him to come to such a great environment and see other kids that love cricket the same way that he does.”
Isidingo actor Jack Devnarain, who plays Rajesh on the popular SABC3 soapie, is a big cricket fan and loved the idea of his six-year-old daughter Surina participating in her first KFC Mini-Cricket festival.
“As a father and actor I don't think I've ever stopped playing. It was such a joy to see hundreds of kids celebrating the launch of the KFC Mini-Cricket programme by doing just that: playing! I saw our future leaders competing, learning and interacting and it was a great privilege to be a part of it. My congratulations to Cricket SA and KFC on this exciting campaign, it looks set to be a winning partnership!” He said.
Former Miss South Africa and businesswoman, Joan Ramagoshi, who is pregnant with her second child, brought her three-year-old daughter Aobakoe to the launch, and was delighted to hear that KFC Mini-Cricket was now being introduced for pre-schoolers.
“I’m very excited for this initiative, I think it’s great to ensure an active lifestyle for kids. I encourage other mothers and parents to get our kids involved in sport, not only does it help them interact with other kids, but it’s a good and healthy lifestyle. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed today’s activities, she hasn’t let go of her bat once since she received it. I want to commend Cricket South Africa and KFC on what they are doing and I am behind them all the way.”
Model and businesswoman Christina Storm came along with her daughter, Ruby Small, who thoroughly enjoyed getting coaching lessons from national women’s team player and KFC Mini-Cricket ambassador Trisha Chetty. Storm said: “Mini-cricket is really cool! My daughter thoroughly enjoyed herself at the festival and spent the whole weekend with her mini-cricket set. Attending the festival was very educational for me because I didn’t know much about cricket and now I’m getting to learn more. It was also great to see some of the Proteas interacting with the children.”
Saturday's Gauteng festival attracted over 800 children, and marked the start of KFC’s second year as the proud sponsor of the Mini-Cricket programme, which has been running since the 1980s. Protea players Hashim Amla, Morne Morkel, and Imran Tahir were also on-hand to pledge their support for the campaign.
On the ground, the campaign will see 10 000 children actively participating at KFC Mini-Cricket festivals throughout the country from now until March next year. KFC will be activating their inflatable KFC Action Zones at all the festivals, which allow the children to test their cricket skills in fun and exciting ways.
