CSA endorses Cricket Fridays

Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa (CSA) has welcomed an initiative by Lead SA, encouraging the South African public to show their 100% support for the Proteas.

Similar to the successful trend of Football Fridays, where South Africans wore their soccer jerseys in support of Bafana Bafana, people are now being encouraged to show their 100% support for the Proteas ahead of the Cricket World Cup in February.

The launch of the Cricket Friday initiative comes a day before a five-match One Day International series between the Proteas and India. The first match takes place at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday, January 12.

Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola welcomed the initiative, saying: “CSA supports any initiative that is 100% behind the Proteas! We congratulate Lead SA on backing our boys.”

Primedia Group Head: News and Current Affairs, Yusuf Abramjee said: “Lead SA is getting behind all national sports. We supported Bafana Bafana ahead of the World Cup and created much excitement. We also arranged the very successful parade through the streets of Sandton two days before kick off. It was the biggest show of support for any sport in the history of SA.

“We have decided to get fully behind the Proteas and mobilize the public because we believe our cricketers need the support ahead and during the Cricket World Cup. The nation needs to show its support.

“We are encouraging our listeners and readers via Lead SA to wear their cricket shirts every Friday. We have declared Fridays Pure Protea Fridays and will do so each week from now - and throughout the tournament.

“We have engaged the Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, who is 100% behind it. On Monday, he publically endorsed it and called on South Africans to get their shirts out,” said Abramjee. “The Football Friday initiative which we also drove extensively united the nation and created patriotism. Our intention is to do the same for cricket.”

Fans can purchase official Pure Protea 100% South African supporters gear via cricket.co.za, at selected Sneakers stores and at all home Proteas games.
