BATSMEN IN : AB de Villiers 51*, JP Duminy 2*

BATSMEN OUT : Graeme Smith 9, Hashim Amla 0, Faf du Plessis 55, Dean Elgar 83, Quinton de Kock 7

17:33 - SUMMARY

Former Proteas players Kepler Wessels and Shaun Pollock agree that the day's honours must go to Australia after South Africa lost two wickets shortly before play was halted. The fact that the second new ball will be taken first thing tomorrow will make things tough for the hosts.

The current partnership between De Villiers and Duminy will be vitally important.

Join us again tomorrow morning for some more INTERACTIVE COMMENTARY!

17:31 - STUMPS ON DAY 1

Play has officially been called off with South Africa on 214/5 after 83 overs.

Play will start a little earlier tomorrow with 95 overs to be bowled on Day 2 as they try to make up for the lost time.

17:27 - Still no official word on whether play will continue...

17:15 - FAN VIEWS

Sport24 fan Cedric Frolic writes: Robin Petersen should have been an automatic selection to play as a frontline spinner. ?He learnt his trade on the St George's wicket and his batting would've been an added benefit. You don't go and play at St George's without a frontline spinner.

Sport 24 fan Meshan Naidoo writes: Smith should rather bowl spin, maybe he will do something good for the team and take a wicket,  because he certainly isn’t doing anything good with the bat.

17:14 - EXPECT SPINNERS TO BOWL A LOT

Australia's spinners (Lyon and Smith) have bowled 27 overs between them, taking three wickets for 65.

This slower pitch offers more to the spinners which means JP Duminy and perhaps Dean Elgar may bowl a lot later in the game.

Should the Proteas have gone for a frontline spinner perhaps?

17:13 - Australian captain Michael Clarke wanted to take the new ball, but was told the the light is too bad for the quicks to bowl. So that looks like it for the day...

17:11 - BAD LIGHT has stopped play with South Africa on 214/5 after 83 overs. It is unlikely to improve, which should mean the end of the day's play...

17:08 - WORLD RECORD!!!

AB de Villiers has become the first player in the history of Test cricket to hit at least a 50 in 12 consecutive Test matches.

17:08 - HALF-CENTURY for De Villiers, off 124 balls.

17:05 - TWEET

This is absolute filth from Smith. Half trackers every ball. Poor QdK - Peter Miller

17:02 - But the visitors decide not to take it as part-timer Smith continues...

17:02 - SA 204/5 after 80 overs. The second new ball is now available.

16:57 - Time for Duminy to play up to his potential with the bat now. An average of 31.82 is not good enough for a man of his ability.

16:56 - PICTURE

Poor decision-making cost Quinton de Kock... (Getty Images)

16:56 - QUOTE

"Extreme inexperience and a lack of thought," Radio2000 commentator Peter Kirsten on Quinton de Kock's brain fart.

16:54 - Momentum back in Australia's favour now, thanks to two silly shots off spinners by Elgar and De Kock.

16:54 - JP Duminy is the new batsman in.

16:52 - WICKET! Silly stuff from De Kock. He goes down the pitch but mis-times a Smith delivery to be caught by substitute Moises Henriques for 7. Shocking shot that went straight up. Looked like a googly from Smith that fooled him! SA 200/5.

16:51 - 200 up for South Africa, off 461 balls.

16:49 - Aussies bringing on another spinner in leggie Steve Smith. But De Villiers smacks him for four first ball...

16:47 - Wow, Lyon rips one and it turns viciously. Ominous spin signs for later... Luckily De Kock lets it go...

16:45 - SA 193/4 after 75 overs. 5 overs left before the second new ball becomes available.

16:43 - MILESTONE FOR DE VILLIERS

7 000 TEST RUNS for AB de Villiers. Best batsman in the world!

16:41 - Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has recorded figures of 2/44 in 19 overs (run rate 2.31). Expect JP Duminy and possibly also Dean Elgar to bowl a lot of spin later in the game...

16:32 - De Kock off the mark in Test cricket with a brilliant cut shot off Lyon for four. That also brings up the Drinks Break...

16:30 - TWEET

Ignore the number on his shirt, @QuinnyDeKock69 is the 317th to play Test cricket for South Africa - Simon Borchardt

16:25 - Can't help but be critical of Elgar. There was no need to go and play that shot and he was looking so good... Had the chance to score a hundred in what would have been his finest cricketing moment.

16:23 - Debutant Quinton de Kock is next in. He has a massive career ahead of him.

16:22 - WICKET! Elgar loses patience, tries to hit Lyon out the ground but it goes straight up and is caught by Harris. He goes for 83. SA 181/4.

16:07 - 50 PARTNERSHIP between De Villiers and Elgar, off 133 balls.

16:07 - Off-spinner Lyon back on just as the winds seems to be picking up a little more...

15:57 - De Villiers hits Siddle for back-to-back boundaries to up the run-rate somewhat. Run-rate 2.67 per over at present.

15:54 - It appears to be getting a little bit darker at St George's Park #badweathergoaway

15:47 - FANS HAVE A GO AT JOHNSON

Mitchell Johnson laughing at some sledging from the PE crowd. He responds by kissing the Australian badge on his shirt...

15:43 - FAN VIEWS ON DAY 1 TOTAL

Sport24 fan Big Mac, writes:

At least 250 by close of the day if bad-light doesn't come in to play.

15:40 - De Villiers edges Harris through gully for four to bring up South Africa's 150. Relatively safe shot along the ground...

15:38 - Harris bowls the second over after tea.

15:35 - Brilliant on-drive from Elgar off Johnson takes him to 65.

15:34 - Floodlights still on. As has been the case all day...

15:33 - Johnson bowls the first over of the final session.

15:31 - Welcome back for the final session. We're thinking 220/4 at the close of play would see South Africa take honours on Day 1.

What score would satisfy you by the close of play?

15:12 - TEA ON DAY 1: SA 145/3.

Another decent session by the hosts, who lost only the wicket of Faf du Plessis (55) in that session.

Join us again in about 20 minutes for the day's final session.

15:08 - Harris to bowl the final over before tea.

15:02 - Elgar's balance at the crease is really impressing us here at Sport24. He is putting it to those he decided he should lose his national contract. A century for Elgar (currently on 59) would make it tough for Alviro Petersen to get his spot back...

14:53 - Peter Kirsten says the bounce in this pitch is "slower and more even" and that the batsmen "feel more at ease" on it because they trust the bounce. That was clearly not the case in Centurion last week!

14:51 - PICTURE

Much slower track in PE than SuperSport P. Less pace and bounce as proven by this Johnson comparison - Mike Haysman

14:50 - Not so much pace in this pitch Johnson clealry not as dangerous as he was in Centurion last week.

AB is very impatient, playing some risky shots but cannot get off the mark. Calm down, dude! - Cricket365

14:25 - De Villiers drives hard at Lyon, who looks like he dropped a catch there, but replays show that the ball was hit hard into the ground...

14:19 - AB de Villiers is the new man in.

14:17 - WICKET! Du Plessis is out for 55, caught at short leg by Steve Smith off Lyon. He played it onto his pads and then straight into the fielder's hands. Darn you, drinks break! SA 123/3.

14:14 - DID YOU KNOW?

The last time Du Plessis and Elgar batted together in a Test in Port Elizabeth, both got hundreds and they shared a 131-run partnership v New Zealand in January 2013.

14:12 - HALF-CENTURY for Elgar, coming off 112 balls. Six fours and two sixes.

14:05 - Lyon back on now.

14:03 - 100 PARTNERSHIP between Du Plessis and Elgar, coming off 211 balls.

14:00 - PICTURE

13:59 - HALF-CENTURY for Du Plessis, coming off 117 balls. Five fours and one six.

13:58 - Du Plessis guides Johnson for four wide of point to bring up South Africa's 100.

13:56 - A vicious bouncer from Johnson strikes Elgar in the elbow. But the good thing is that Elgar is not backing off and getting into line nicely...

13:55 - PICTURE

13:53 - Massive lbw attack on Du Plessis by Siddle. Given NOT OUT. An inside edge saves Faf there after he was beaten by a slower ball..

13:51 - Siddle back in in place of Lyon.

13:47 - This pitch is clearly not at the pace of the Centurion wicket last week. Johnson just a tad easier to handle...

13:39 - TWEET

Elgar just looks like a Test batsman to me. Which is not a bad start - Rob Houwing

13:37 - Danger-man Johnson now back on, replacing Harris. He bowls from the Duck Pond end.

13:35 - INTERESTING STAT

Lyon has been hit for five sixes in this series and only two fours!

13:35 - No Elgar chips in and smacks Lyon for six down the ground.

13:34 - The St George's Park band playing "Lion Sleeps Tonight" while Lyon bowls...

13:32 - Du Plessis flicks Harris for four off his legs. Harris and Siddle have been a bit guilty today of bowling a few deliveries down leg...

13:29 - Du Plessis starting to use his feet nicely against the spinner. Positive signs!

13:23 - Not much turn for Lyon at the moment...

13:21 - Faf beautifully uses his feet and smacks Lyon over the mid-on boundary for SIX!

13:19 - PICTURE: Is AB this good?

Nobody likes a smart arse... - Fred Boycott

13:16 - Lyon also starts with a maiden.

13:14 - Lyon bowls the second over after lunch to Du Plessis.

13:13 - Harris starts with a maiden over first up after lunch.

13:11 - There's not as much carry through to the 'keeper as there was last week in Centurion. "That's good for South Africa's batsmen," says former batsman Peter Kirsten, speaking on Radio2000.

13:10 - Harris starts proceedings to Elgar.

13:08 - Welcome back for the afternoon session. Let us hope for some more fight and determination as shown by Elgar and Du Plessis in the first session.

We might be in the Friendly City, but the vibe hasn't been very friendly. Australia don't seem to rate Vernon Philander much.

David Warner on what he seems to think was a convenient back injury before a Test on a flat pitch: "I would have liked to see him bowl at Adelaide in that second Test when he apparently hurt his back - and was bowling in the nets three days later."

Graeme Smith on Mitchell Johnson: "I truly believe that the wicket played a big role in the success that he had. The stats, even in the Ashes, say that he picked up a lot of lower-order wickets."
