Hobart - Australia were 59 for one at stumps on the third day of the third and final Test against Pakistan at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart, on Saturday, an overall lead of 277 runs.
Pakistan were dismissed after tea for 301, trailing by 218 runs, but the hosts opted not to enforce the follow-on.
Simon Katich will resume in the morning on 33 and Ricky Ponting on 25.
Earlier, Umar Gul (38 not out) and Mohammad Asif (29) put together a final wicket partnership of 53 runs.
Salman Butt defied the Australian attack for most of the day by scoring his third Test century, before Katich wreaked havoc amongst the middle order, taking three wickets in the space of six overs.
Resuming on 94/4, Butt and Shoiab Malik set to repair the damage of the day before, posting a 129-run partnership for the fifth wicket to take the visitors to within 103 runs of passing the follow-on target.
Then Katich struck and - together with Nathan Hauritz - the pair demolished Pakistan's hope within 35 runs with five wickets between them.
Butt was dismissed for 102, reaching the boundary 17 times off 234 deliveries.
Malik was the only other batsman who posted any score of significance, a dogged 144-ball 58 which included 10 fours.
