Johannesburg - Proteas’ coach Mickey Arthur provides a fascinating insight into the planning that went into South Africa’s most successful cricketing year ever in the 2009 edition of the Mutual & Federal SA Cricket Annual which was officially launched in Johannesburg today.
“This is one of a number of interesting articles that should make the latest edition another very good read for cricket enthusiasts,” commented editor Colin Bryden.
“The past year has also been a very important one for the advancement of technology,” he added. “For the first time we had the Decision Review System – DRS as it is commonly called – used in a Test match in South Africa which allows for players to refer umpiring decisions on the field of play to the third umpire.
“Vintcent van der Bijl, the ICC manager of match officials, provides a thought-provoking article on where technology is taking cricket,” added Bryden.
As usual one of the highlights is the naming of the five Mutual & Federal Cricketers of the Year with those honoured this time being JP Duminy, Imraan Khan, Roelof van der Merwe, Wendell Bossenger and Claude Henderson.
Gerald Majola, Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO, put the importance of the Annual into context: “It is Cricket South Africa’s honour and privilege to jointly launch the latest edition of the Mutual & Federal SA Cricket Annual.
“The annual is a vital part of CSA’s portfolio because it records for posterity the achievements of both our professional and amateur players.
“This edition is a real collectors’ item because it contains the playing details of South African cricket’s best ever season.
“This includes the extraordinary deeds of Graeme Smith and the Proteas who rose to the top of the world’s Test and ODI ratings by the end of the season.
“Their achievements included the unprecedented “double” of beating both England and Australia in a Test series on their home turf.
“CSA also congratulates the five players named as Cricketers of the Year by the annual. It is good to see recognition being brought to emerging and established players, such as JP Duminy and Wendell Bossenger.
“We would like to thank both Mutual & Federal and the annual’s editor, Colin Bryden, most sincerely for producing this highly respected publication,” he concluded.
