Nagpur - Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla slammed unbeaten centuries to help South Africa seize the momentum on the opening day of the first Test against India on Saturday.

Kallis scored 159 and Amla made 115 as the tourists recovered from a shaky 6-2 to reach 291-2 at close after electing to bat at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium in Nagpur.

The duo shared 285 runs for the unbroken third wicket to post South Africa's highest partnership against India for any wicket.

Kallis has so far hit 13 fours and two sixes in his 290-ball knock while Amla also opened up to play some fine shots after a sedate start to his 225-ball innings.

"Kallis and Amla batted really well," said Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "But our bowlers also did a decent job as the wicket was rather slow. They were a bit unlucky as the ball missed the edge on quite a few occasions.

"We had to go for a semi-defensive field as there was not much help for spinners. There was a bit of turn but it was not a rank turner."

Amla reached his eighth Test century in style, hitting part-time spinner Virender Sehwag for a four to the square-leg boundary.

Kallis completed his 34th Test ton to join India's Sunil Gavaskar and West Indian Brian Lara in third place on the all-time list of top century getters.

India's Sachin Tendulkar heads the list with 45 centuries, followed by Australian skipper Ricky Ponting on 39.

India's bowlers laboured without luck after tasting success in the morning session when pace spearhead Zaheer Khan (2-67) sent back openers Ashwell Prince and Graeme Smith in a fiery opening spell.

Prince was out for a duck, caught behind by Dhoni in the fifth over when he failed to fend off a bouncer, although TV replays suggested the ball brushed past his arm guard rather than the gloves.

The pacer struck again in his next over to remove Smith (six) with a ball that moved through the gap between bat and pad, cleaning up the stumps in spectacular fashion.

Kallis and Amla then steadied the innings, putting on 103 runs off 33 overs in the post-lunch period and another 98 in the final session.

Kallis looked confident against the spinners, slog-sweeping Harbhajan Singh twice for a huge six and a four in an over to race to his 53rd Test half-century off 75 balls.

"It was a very difficult start in the morning but we recovered fantastically," said South Africa's batting coach Kepler Wessels.

"It was an awesome performance by Kallis and Amla. Their shot selection was very good. You don't often see Harbhajan go through without a maiden. They had a very good game plan against Harbhajan and executed it perfectly."

Injury-hit India, missing the experienced trio of Rahul Dravid, Venkatsai Laxman and Yuvraj Singh, awarded Test caps to Subramaniam Badrinath and Wriddhiman Saha.

Saha came in only because Rohit Sharma, called in as cover for Laxman, hurt his left ankle during warm-up before the toss.

The second and final Test of the series between the world's top two teams begins in Kolkata on February 14.

South Africa can snatch back the number one Test ranking from India if they win the series while the hosts need just a draw to remain on top.

Vonnie2, no need to go there... whatever sport it is (be it cricket, rugby or soccer), as South Africans, we should support them all - support the guys on the field even if we do not agree with the team make up, strategy, captain, coach, etc...

Well done Captain Sniff. Your declaration was no doubt in the interests of the team. After all, who knows what might happen in three overs? And, perhaps more importantly, you remain the highest scoring South African!
Vonnies22/6/2010 11:16 PM
Come off it - Graeme is a terrific Captain - Typical South African comments - when we Win, we are the Greatest and Smith is the Best, when we loose, then everyone is NO GOOD be it Cricket Rugby, Tennis, Golf or whatever, the only Team that seams to remain at the Top is Bafana Bafana - Win or Loose. - I WONDER WHY?????

Well done Amla! Underated yet his been consistent for a good while but doesnt get the credit he deserves, gets dropped from the ODI squad for Bosman on a tour to Spin India. Can bosman play spin? Joke selection.
Walter2/6/2010 5:03 PM
I used to call him Kakkis, because of his annoyingly slow scoring rate in previous ODI's, also he came across as a selfish player playing for his own stats, no matter what the game situation. But boy, he is class, especially in tests, so give the man credit!

MGW and Jaco are in the game of cricket. The rest .... not to clued up about this game we call cricket. Smith is still a great bat and if we tossed him who would open???? He is the only opener in the side. Prince should be down at 5 - his favoured position. Kallis is the worlds best cricketer in TEST cricket but in the other forms well pretty slow thus no good especially 20/20. As far as Smith´s captaining goes he is the best we´ve had and give him a break - he doesn´t get a say in selecting the guys he has to win games with. This is not football. In cricket the skipper makes all the onfield tactical decisions.

Amla @ 3 & Kallis @ 4 is working out quite well. With Kallis' recent form, it's clear he has a few more years left. Doubt he will surpass Tendulkar, but 2nd most 100's is something to be proud of!

Kallis Alles!!!

Prince is a great cricker, but he is a middle order batsman, not an opener. I think that Prince is a better batsman than JP, but JP will probably be kept due to his bowling. I would drop JP, since he is out of form, but he will probably be kept, as Kepler and Prince don't get on well. Either way, we need a proper opener with Smith, sorry Ashwell. Also, well done Amla and Kallis.

when at last will they drop biff?
Chris2/6/2010 3:12 PM
What gets me is that they fire the coach and the selectors, and then select exactly the same squad of players.
Whitey2/6/2010 3:00 PM
HUDSON The best opening batsmen...ONE problem only, he had LEGS...I cannot remember one good innings by him
Gemsbok2/6/2010 2:51 PM
@MGWhitfield. Prince might be a good player at home but he hasnt been able to score runs his last number of innings. If he is out of place then why the hell doesnt his stupid opening partner and captain do something about it? Cant blame Arthur for this anymore as he is gone. JP Dumminy still has to show his worth in the team as well. He is not a good bowler and his batting is suspect as well.
Miked2/6/2010 2:28 PM
@gemsbok Spot on about Kallis - For your info Smith scored the most runs in the English tour. He might not be a great captain but he is a very good batsman. Lets give a chanceto adjust his technique. The Dolphins dropped Kevin Pietersen after a long series of no scores and look what happened, SA lost a brilliant player.S I say hang in there Prince.
Dave2/6/2010 2:01 PM
Go it Kallis - make it a double this time round just to add salt into the wounds of your perpetrators. Your a HERO
Chris2/6/2010 1:53 PM
Would somoene please suggest to the selectors that Smith has passed his sell by date. With him opening we start the innings with one wicket down!
Jaco2/6/2010 1:30 PM
When I read comments like those of Gemsbok, it just confirms my opinion that South African cricket "fans" are the least knowledgeable about the game of all supporter groups in the world.
MGWhitfield2/6/2010 1:15 PM
Hey Gemsbok. Prince is a good player but out of position. JP Duminy rplaced him because of 2 good games. Whilst JP is a good player, the truth is he does not deserve to keep Prince out of the no.5 position at present. JP needs more exposure at lower levels to get his technique and head right. Prince is also going through one of those times when he is getting some exceptional and unusual deliveries getting him out. A bad run. SA needs 2 specialist openers, not one and a "make do." That's fine foe shorter version but not for tests. Smith is inconsistent - low score or a huge one. An opener need to be consistent. The main thing for an opener is to take the shine off and tire the bowler - that's not being done for SA. When last did SA have 2 specialist openers? Kirsten and Hudson?
MGWhitfield2/6/2010 1:05 PM
No doubt Kallis is one of the top ever batsman and allrounder - choose either! Only one black spot: the elusive double ton. He has to learn to bat overnight. Watch him: if he is still in at close, he'll go cheaply on the morning. I hope not though.
Gemsbok2/6/2010 12:18 PM
What the F*&k is Prince still doing in the team. Let him play for his home side back in SA. He is useless in the SA side. Is this another politicle inclusion? Surely he dont deserve his place in the team. Smith is no good either. It's clear he was the one to GO and not Arthur. WELL DONE "OLD MAN" KALLIS. You make us proud. Keep going AMLA.
Pierre2/6/2010 11:49 AM
Who is Ngconde Balfour? Ngconde Balfour means nothing to me. Ha! Ha! Go Kallis!!!
When?2/6/2010 11:22 AM
When will all those idiots who still believe Kallis is “k#k” see that he is 1 of the top player EVER and certainly is and always has been the best cricketer in SA. Kallis you are THE MAN!
Greg2/6/2010 11:06 AM
Brilliant, brilliant player!!! A genius. What a run machine and a true asset to SA. Go Proteas!!!
