Sharjah - Vinay Kumar held his nerve to defend nine runs off the last over of the match as the Kolkata Knight Riders completed a narrow two-run win over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their IPL match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

The supersport.com website reports that Bangalore, chasing Kolkata’s 150 for seven, began the last over needing nine runs before AB de Villiers (11) and Albie Morkel (6 not out) scored three runs off the first three balls from medium-pacer Kumar (2-26).

De Villiers was then superbly caught at deep midwicket by Chris Lynn who dived backwards to take the catch, as Bangalore ended on 148 for five.

Bangalore had looked comfortable as Yogesh Takawale and Parthiv Patel (21) pounded 67 runs for the first wicket.

Takawale was the aggressor as he slammed 40 off just 28 balls with eight fours before he was trapped leg-before by seamer Jacques Kallis.

Patel was also out with the score on 67, caught at cover off the bowling of medium-pacer Vinay Kumar, before Virat Kohli (31) and Yuvraj Singh (31) added 55 runs for the third wicket.

But Kohli was bowled by spinner Sunil Narine while Yuvraj was dismissed in the penultimate over when he was caught at deep point off the bowling of quick Umesh Yadav to set up the tense finish.

Lynn and Kallis had earlier shared in an 80-run partnership to provide the bulk of Kolkata’s runs.

Australian Lynn was in an aggressive frame of mind as he blasted 45 off 31 deliveries with three fours and three sixes while Kallis was slightly more circumspect, particularly at the start of his knock, as he scored 43 off 41 balls with two fours and a six.

Fast bowler Varun Aaron was the stand-out bowler during the innings as his career-best return of 3-16 off four overs helped stymie Kolkata’s search for runs after Bangalore had won the toss and elected to field first.

Kallis and Lynn’s third-wicket stand came up off 10.1 overs and helped rescue Kolkata who had slumped to 10 for two after Gautam Gambhir (0) was dismissed for his third duck in a row and Manish Pandey was out for five.

Lynn, who struck two sixes off the first over from veteran offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, eventually departed in the 12th over when he lofted a delivery from Aaron to De Villiers at long-off.

Yusuf Pathan was out two balls later, caught at mid-off off the bowling of Aaron, before Kallis was out in the search for quick runs when he was caught at deep cover off the bowling of legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Kallis was dismissed in the 16th over and Aaron claimed his third wicket in the 18th over when he had Robin Uthappa (22) caught at deep midwicket.

Suryakumar Yadav then struck a valuable 24 not out before Kumar (4) was caught at short fine leg off the last ball of the innings, bowled by left-arm quick Mitchell Starc who ended the innings with 2-33.
