Cape Town Stadium under construction (File)

Cape Town - The Cape Town City Council has approved "Cape Town Stadium" as the official name for the city's 2010 Soccer World Cup venue.

According to the Cape Times, councillors on Wednesday unanimously voted in support of the name.

The panel considered 302 proposals for the new name, but in the end Cape Town Stadium beat names like Dome of Storms, Foot of Africa, Saartjie Baartman, Table Top, Motherdome, Rainbow International Stadium and the South Easter.

The city's 2010 spokesperson, Pieter Cronje, said the city recognised the Xhosa and Afrikaans equivalent of Cape Town Stadium.

However, there was some initial confusion regarding the stadium's Xhosa name.

It was at first suggested that the stadium would be Ikapa Stadium, but then it was decided that eStadium saseKapa would be more accurate.

Finally, city director of legal services Lungelo Mbandazayo ended the debate by calling for the stadium to be Inkundla Yezemidlalo Yasekapa.

I don't think it's necessary for everybody to be negative. The name was elected democratically. If the majority wanted it to be Cape Town Stadium, then it should be so.

Loftus-groenveld?

Why can't it have a truely african name like other stadiums? Something like Absa Park,Coca_cola Park,Outsurance Oval, Securicor Loftus,FNB Stadium or Vodacom Park?

i think the name change from greenpt stadium is that the stormers/ wp might soon be moving across. imagine wp playing at the "greenpoint stadium", as opposed to newlands.therefore name change needed.

Why not name it after a humble ruling party politician - if one exists - or forgotten revolutionary ? Why be different ?

Two oceans acquarium - there is the Two Oceans marathon - everybody links Cape Town with two oceansa - why not call it the "Two Oceans Stadium"

I think "Atlantic Arena" sounds cool. Or maybe just call it "The Stadium- Cape Town". I live in CT and think that the brand Cape Town is great but really do think that they could have come up with something more original....

Once again Cape Townians prove how thick they are. Its an INTERNATIONAL stadium yet you cannot think outside your little box.

NEVON, you are just being an idiot! There is a large Xhoxa population in Cape Town, there would have been nothing wrong with a Xhosa name.
NEVON10/30/2009 8:26 PM
we call it anything,{english}but NOT XHOSA name.

The Cape Town city council decided that they wanted the words 'Cape Town' in the name, to help market the city. I for one prefer Green Point Stadium, but what can yu do?

I also support Julius Malema Staduim in honour of a man who dares be unique. Because you see comrades, whenever a custodian begins the process or really and intentionally, considering the fact that even if in retrospect, all stake holders altough some can be classified as minorities in the new despinsation, see and accept transformation not only as a duty but a vehicle that brings about a harmonious end to the struggle of the child of the soil. This struggle is that of common sense. For which there is no cure.

MOTHER CITY STADIUM.I THINK THT WORD IS FINE.

What was wrong with Greenpoint Stadium? I live in CT and I'm still gonna refer to it as Greenpoint Stadium. I'm sure most locals will do the same.

This is the most pathetic name yet. I think Ikapa Stadium sounds much better and commercially sound. These guys seriously need a life. The name just does not strike anything but then again look at what they had to decide from. Who came up with Dome of Storms, Table Top, lol, really now. Amazing, I thought we had a creative people. I propose a review and I trow my suggestion in the hat, Mother City Stadium - this embodies what this province is about. "A home for All". A mother will forever love her children

Lousy (file) photo. Creates the impression that a lot of work needs to be done if you miss the "(file)" part. Saw photos this week when they turned on the lights for the first time. Awesome.
Suli10/30/2009 11:10 AM
I propose "Julius Malema stadium"

Who really cares what they call it. Some insurance company or the like will re-name it when there are no funds to support it

Are they really getting paid for attending a City Council meeting to "approve" this stroke of genius type name? How about a meeting to find other proper names like "Cape Town Table Mountain" or "Cape Town Greenmarket Square"... Well done guys, you do a good job there!
Smanga Zulu10/30/2009 10:14 AM
They should have called it King Shaka Zulu Stadium ... In recognition of Africa's greatest close combat warrior! Cape Town Stadium is kinda generic and lacks vooma... I am only kidding, before you attack me! Cape Town is fine, worked there for two years from 2005 to 2007... Lovely Xhosa and Afrikaans mix!
francois10/30/2009 10:13 AM
what about "stadium without a name "
Fi510/30/2009 9:48 AM
Did they consider Newnewlands?
