Nairobi - An Arsenal fan in football-mad Kenya hanged himself following his team's 4-1 aggregate drubbing by arch-rivals Manchester United in the Champions League semi-final, police said on Wednesday.

Suleiman Alphonso Omondi, a 29-year-old Kenyan living in the capital Nairobi's Embakasi neighbourhood, hung himself in his Arsenal shirt late Tuesday after the match, police said.

"We were watching the match at Bamba 70 pub, and when Arsenal was defeated, Suleiman just walked out in protest and he was crying," Calvin Otieno, one of his friends, said.

"We didn't know he was going to hang himself until Wednesday morning when we received the reports and came here to find his body at the balcony," Otieno said outside the deceased's home.

Arsenal slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, capping a disappointing season for the Gunners who were already out of the Premier League title race early in the season.

Football-related domestic tragedies are frequent in the region, where English clubs enjoy passionate following and European games draw more attention than national and continental games.

Very unfortunate he had to do that; more unfortunate that his outing himself will not increase the quantity of food the poor Nairobians can buy. Idiot!

Anonymous User @ 2:02 PM: The Arse 'n all team comprise mainly of foreigners with only 2 Englishmen in Gibbs & Walcott. btw Chelsea also have only 2 Englishmen in their starting 11 -Terry & Lampard, the majority of players in both teams are of African origin who are used to chasing 'cow skin', but on 4 legs...

My hearts goes to the family of the diseased while calling all fanatics to learn to that in a competition like this there will always be a loser and a winner who knows morrow those who lose could still win

pudi ya tsela please get a life, you are one of the worst africans because you support zuma, and he has nothing to do with this. A man who has 754 cases of curruption against him, several offences of rape and he is an ex convict and now south africa's new president. Get some education and help fix south africa, not sing zuma's song "my machine gun my machine gun, give me my machine gun". South africa will become like most other african countries, run by a dictator. Leave Zuma out of this poor man's family. shame on you

We condem that kind of behaviour. There are two possible outcome in a football match is either you lose or win in a cup competion. What that fan in Kenya did it should be condemmed.

"Hung" is the past tense of hanging something "Hanged" would be the correct past tense for hanging a person

What would have happen if Bafana Bafana fans was just as passionate. Almost everybody in the country would have been died by now.
Anonymous User5/6/2009 2:02 PM
Epitome of madness! Why would you kill yourself for a bunch of English men chasing cow skin? I guess they would not care less!
Anonymous User5/6/2009 2:02 PM
WOW, very sad ! Yes, the Gunners played crap, but I must say I was most disappointed with their so called supporters who left the Emirates after 68 minutes ! Worst supporters in Europe ! No wonder their team fell apart ! You win some, you lose some, but you LIVE to fight another day !

We all know that FIFA are the head honchos of the beautiful game. They set out laws that govern the sport and we are supposed to fall in line and follow. Now I agree that there must be rules in place for everyone to follow but what I don’t get, is how FIFA are currently strutting around like they own South Africa, says Mr Controversy.
