Bloemfontein – Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské has made a few shock selections for Friday’s Super14 opener against the Bulls.

Drotske’s 22-man squad includes seven Super14 rookies and the new blood may just be what the Cheetahs need to start the competition on a winning note.

Riaan Viljoen (fullback), Lionel Mapoe (right wing) and Ashley Johnson (No 8) will make their debut in the starting team, while Ryno Barnes (hooker), Coenie Oosthuizen (prop), Walti Vermeulen (lock) and Sias Ebersohn (flyhalf) will get the chance to play off the substitutes bench for the first time.

Supporters will also be delighted that flyhalf Naas Olivier passed a fitness test and will be able to start.

“He showed in the Currie Cup that he is the top flyhalf in the region and is important for us as far as penalties are concerned,” said Drotské.

Viljoen was picked ahead of Hennie Daniller at fullback and will bring calm in the face of the Bulls’ aerial attack.

The Springbok’s boot can also be useful for possible long-range drop goals and penalties.

Tewis de Bruyn’s experience and kicking ability got him the nod at scrumhalf ahead of Sarel Pretorius.

Johnson won the race for the No 8 jersey over Frans Viljoen because of the Bulls’ kicking tactics.

“Ashley is a little better under the high ball than Frans. Frans is very physical and his impact in the second half will play a big role,” said Drotské.

Vermeulen and Ebersohn’s inclusion came as shocks. It is Vermeulen’s lineout prowess that got him the nod ahead of locks such as Izak van der Westhuizen and Rudi Mathee.

“We are playing against Victor Matfield and may need two lineout locks on the field,” said Drotské.

Many people view this as Ebersohn’s year and he impressed enough to be handed the job as Olivier’s deputy ahead of Louis Strydom.

The additional flyhalf is a precautionary measure as Olivier has only just been declared fit after struggling with a knee injury.

“Sias did well in the pre-season, but Naas has not played much and will probably not be able to play for 80 minutes,” said Drotské.

Cheetahs:

Riaan Viljoen, Lionel Mapoe, Corné Uys, Meyer Bosman, Jongi Nokwe, Naas Olivier, Tewis de Bruyn, Ashley Johnson, Juan Smith (captain), Heinrich Brüssow, David de Villiers, Nico Breedt, WP Nel, Adriaan Strauss, Wian du Preez

Substitutes: Ryno Barnes, Coenie Oosthuizen, Walti Vermeulen, Frans Viljoen, Sarel Pretorius, Sias Ebersohn, Danwel Demas

I am sitting here in Walvis thinking how common you must be to tune somebody on a site like a frikkin troll to spark some sort of argument spree, or more likely a "yo mama so" name-calling. As for the very' intelligent comments from all the bulls. Grow up losers. Daar is net een STAAT!

KWAGGA2/9/2010 1:17 PM
Ek glo dit gaan 'n goeie harde game wees. Die Cheetahs behoort net-net te wen.....as die rev nie weer betaal word om Gutro Steenkamp nie raak te sien nie!!! (hy is mos 'n klein mannetjie die Gutro) Geniet die rugby!!
Tinus Du Plessis2/9/2010 12:55 PM

Capie2/9/2010 12:16 PM
@Chris - pse also check your SPELLING before submitting comments - what with 'bleu bull fans'? Dunno what's shocking about Cheetah selection, looks like a very good side. But then again, this is S14 territory, clearly not the playground of Cheetah'tjies..........
Paddy2/9/2010 12:13 PM
Lets hope there is an upset in the first round and Cheetahs give the Bulls a hiding! Go Cheetahs!
Michael2/9/2010 11:49 AM
What a strong cheetahs team, this game is going to be a cracker. Bulls might start off with a loss.
Chris2/9/2010 11:10 AM
Some of you guys SPELL very "k*k" ! Check your stuff before you post dammit. Either way - I'll vote for any team playing the bulls, win or loose - can't vote for them. You "Buebull" children studying down here in CT brings with them the "kommin" image of the bleu bull fans. Big bluebull themed bakkies with flags and loud music and 4 fat guys drinking beer driving around town. Some supporter HAHA "Loftus se moer" break it down and use the area for housing more bluebulls in trailers.
Hahaha2/9/2010 10:33 AM
Hahahahahaha, the Cheetahs will remain the laughing stock of SA rugby. Listen to yourselves....the Cheetahs do not stand a whisker of a chance against the Bulls outfit !!!
mack die bloue2/9/2010 10:30 AM
Ja my ou vrinne ,dis n goeie span die.Jammer dat so baie "manne " van julle so neerhalend moet wees.
katman2/9/2010 10:19 AM
He's picked the wrong scrumhalf. Sarel Pretorius was the stand-out scrummie in the Currie Cup - outplayed everyone in SA.
jacques2/9/2010 10:14 AM
Die bulle gaan hulle hande vol he vrydag aand
BLOUGAT2/9/2010 10:11 AM
JULLE VRYSTATERS GAAN JULLE G....E SIEN.GO BULLS.!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Cheetahs!! Free State are constantly 'under the kosh' re their performances (as the politicians are itching to get the Southern Kings into the S14) - and, as the nursery of SA rugby (see Grey Bloem), deserve a far better 'slice of the pie' when it comes to monies available to retain players. I'm a WP supporter - and love Free State rugby too. For decades they have been the nursery of SA rugby - and year after year - they lose their top players to wealthier Unions (to the benefit of especially Northern Transvaal and Natal, yet also Transvaal and WP)... Yet year after year Free State always come back - new players, new combinations - and are there or there-abouts come Currie Cup semis and Final time. Hopefully this is their year in the S14 too! SARU and the sponsors should look at ways of investing more money into the Union - so they may retain (all/most of) their players - and 'rugby justice' is served. How about a fee being paid to the home union when a player, who learnt his rugby through its structures or schools, transfers to another union...?? Free State (Grey Bloem) is our nursery - and it's crucial everyone remembers that. Hak Vrystaat!! :)
Megabull2/9/2010 9:11 AM
Not a bad team FS. But will they be able to beat the Bulls?
Sheldon2/9/2010 9:04 AM
Cheetahs front row will dominate the Bulls and their looseforwards could easily get the upper hand. Nico Breedt will hold his own. This game smells of an early upset. Or would it even be an upset if you look at the teams?
Norman du Plooy2/9/2010 8:21 AM
Good team. The Bulls is going to start their campaign with loose in Bloemfontein.
Beaver2/9/2010 8:14 AM
That Brussow/Smith/Johnson backrow is one of the best in the whole competition.
Blikperd2/9/2010 8:08 AM
Awesome decisions. Griquas players get the recognition they should. Cheetah players know they have to be at their best to get selected.
Get Real2/9/2010 7:51 AM
Experience talks a thousend words. At the end of the day during the last 20 minutes that is what will get the upperhand of this team.
Jacques Kuhn2/9/2010 7:19 AM
Well done Naka! I am not a Cheetah supporter but congratulations on the inclusion on Riaan Viljoen at ullback. He is the most underrated fullback in the country and besides Terblache he was the most solid of them all in last years Currie Cup. He is not only a good kicking fullback but also very potent on attack, just ask Western Province in their clash in Kby last year!!!! Good luck to the Cheetahs and Riaan you surely deserve your opportunity!!!
kobus2/9/2010 7:18 AM
Yes Cheetahs, play rugby play save and you will beat the bulls
bert2/9/2010 7:04 AM
This is a good team. I think Riaan Viljoen is going to be the best 15 this year. He has everything in the making of great 15. But Bulls and Crusaders are the team to beat. It is going to be Fire Works Friday evening.
Easy wen vir Vrystaat!2/9/2010 2:40 AM
Behoort n maklike wen vir die Cheetahs te wees.Los net bietjie "snuif" vir die Bulle in die kleedkamer voor die game!
TheLastRhodesian2/9/2010 12:24 AM
not really that shocking selections, tewis de bruyn is not as good a scrumhalf as pretorius at all and they have bosman, viljoen and olivier who can all kick at goal if needed!! will be gd to see the monster Oosthuizen in action, and seeing vijoen the most underrated flank in the country have a go off the bench!!!......how raubenheimer got on that plane to europe instead of the Kimberley bulldozer is beyond me......oh wait i think i know why!! ;):):P
