Shaw handed two week ban

Johannesburg - British and Irish Lions lock Simon Shaw was banned for two weeks on Sunday after being cited for dangerous play during a 28-9 Test victory over South Africa.

Shaw struck the back of Springboks scrumhalf Fourie du Preez with his knee three minutes before half-time in the third and final Test at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Australian referee Stuart Dickinson sent Shaw to the sinbin, the incident was noted by citing officer Steve Hinds of New Zealand, and the veteran England forward appeared before judicial officer Alan Hudson of Canada on Sunday.

The Lions lost the series against the world champions 2-1 after going down 26-21 in Durban and 28-25 in Pretoria on the previous two weekends.

This is a contact sport where one person is measured against another person for his speed, agility and STRENGTH. So to all the Northern hemisphere teams. Please don't try and make this sport into a "P******" game. We love it because of the contact and physical structure. If you guys cannot handle it, well maybe you should just stick to soccer and maybe ballet.

When I listen to some ,most, of our so-called rugby commentators and administrators, I can understand why we are treated like a backward lot, they sing the oppositions praises whether deserved or not and will very seldom comment on infringements made by the opponents and dubious decisions by refs and FLAGMEN. Who needs Cobus, Joel, Matthew, Hugh,Garth etc. Oh..and Bryce

Sure it was not in somebodies back, but if you are too lazy to tackle someone, dont go and hurt them...thats just not how we should play rugby and it is setting a bad example too all the youngsters watching the series

And he put out the midfield line that many Boks fans felt should have been out there in the first place. The back 3 were the weakest point. The Lions had 5 of their first-teamers absent as well, don't forget. You had to give the Lions an intercept try and have one disallowed for the Lions to win? Don't think so. That would still have made the score 21-16 to the Lions. You won the series fair and square - 2-1. One team wanted the third test more. Get over it and stop whinging - as you like to say to Lions fans.

My problem is that everybody should be judged the same. Treated the same. The fact that Bakkies got banned means the they HAD to ban Shaw. Both players can feel wronged though. This IS rugby after all. Not Touch Rugby.

Can't win a series in SA - we had to field our B team, give them an intercept try and have a legal try by the Boks disallowed by the blind TMO before they could beat us. Then they enter into racist behaviour on the stands while wallowing in their lone, hollow victory. Oh, no, they will be back next year for the soccer - shit!!

RG7/5/2009 5:10 PM: A two week ban at the end of the tour and the end of the NH season. It may as well be three months - he is going to spend it with his feet up drinking cheap ale at any rate! His knee was deliberate and effectively eliminated the Boks top player. Just another bad Lions sportsman who got away with it!
