Four Lions fans robbed in SA

Johannesburg - Four British rugby fans on Saturday told how they were beaten up and robbed by armed thugs in South Africa shortly after their arrival on the same night that the Egyptian side in a key football tournament became the victims of thieves.

Brothers Michael, 57, and Peter Harriott, 58, and Simon 57, and John Murphy, 52, flew into Johannesburg on Thursday night for the British and Irish Lions tour.

In an interview published by the Saturday Star, the men said the robbers had followed them as they drove to a guesthouse in the plush northern Johannesburg suburb of Sandton where they were due to check in.

"A black Mercedes-Benz boxed us in and four men appeared with guns. They surrounded our car. They ordered us out of the car and told us to lie on the floor and remove our wallets and watches," Michael Harriott said.

He was punched in the nose when he tried to grab one of the robbers' guns, according to the report.

"They threw me to the ground and, the next thing, one of the robbers got into our hired car, while the other three jumped in theirs. They sped off with our luggage."

That same night, several players from the Egyptian football team returned from their 1-0 victory over Italy at the Confederations Cup in Johannesburg to find that their hotel rooms had been ransacked.

Team officials reported the theft of, among other things, foreign current to police. The Saturday Star reported that five rooms at the players' hotel in Illovo, near Sandton, had been robbed and that thieves had made off with several thousand dollars.

South Africa's reputation as a hotspot for petty and violent crime has left many question marks as it prepares to host the 2010 football World Cup. Authorities, however, say football fans will be safe.

Last week, one of the new stadiums built for the World Cup was attacked by armed robbers after an international rugby game.

The robbery at the sports bar of the new Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in the southern city of Port Elizabeth took place on Tuesday afternoon, after a game between the British and Irish Lions and the provincial Southern Kings side.

Socrates - you can waffle on till you are blue in the face, but you cannot escape the fact that the government does nothing, or very little to sort out violent crime. They are too busy lining their own pockets. Mark - my comment isn't emotional at all, I still love SA but it's the deeds of the criminals (both on the street & in parliament) that I hate. Wendy & Nigel - I am truly sorry for your losses. It is never easy to bury ones own children and that is why I left SA so that I am never faced with that situation. My two young boys are precious to me so I left to protect their futures. The fact that the cops did virtually nothing for these two individuals highlights what needs to be addressed. ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAW! Not so Mark? Constructive enough for you?
WENDY6/23/2009 8:43 AM
Hi Nigel, I know how you feel, my son Wesley who was also sport mad was shot and killed in a "hijacking" he was 21 years old. That was 4 years ago and NOTHING was done to find his killers. NOTHING. Get a decent police force and bring back the death pentalty. Use Botswana as an example.
Nigel Wilshire6/22/2009 9:41 AM
My son Shaun would have loved to watch the soccer and rugby that is currently being played in this country. Unfortunately, he was murdered at his home and his death went by with scarcely a mention. The SAP could barely stir themselves to follow any sort of protocol, let alone give us feedback through the years that we have hounded them. The irony of the situation is that whilst productive tax paying South Africans, get murdered in droves and get no redress for this wholesale slaughter, we can offer protection to our visitors. What a joke. Our Government is either delusional, or has not got a clue what is actually going on in our day to day lives. Corrupt Cops, lazy Cops, under educated Cops. What Ever. I know some very poor people who do not murder in order to feed their families, so don't link crime to poverty. Crime is linked to Greed and our Government officials are amongst the greediest on the planet. They set the tone and would not want to change their gravy train mentality for fear of having to do an honest days work for a change. This is why we are in this mess. Young folk have no role models and have not been able to differentiate between good and evil. South Africa can never be better until we have leaders that are beyond reproach. I wince each day as I watch the billions that have been wasted on these sporting spectaculars go down the drain, due to mismanagement and bad planning, did the organisers think that a few extra Cops would make the criminals go to ground. Meanwhile, my son is dead and I am left with an everlasting bitter taste due to the lack of concern shown by the authorities, whilst they jump into action to defend tourists. I am not alone.

Welcome to SA! This is going to be an ongoing problem as the government still does nothing to stop such crimes. They are more interested in which Merc they will be picking up on Friday. This is exactly what is going to happen over and over again unless our government steps up and stops focusing on what they can get their greedy litte hands on. You wanted the country - you drove this country into the ground - now it is your responsibility to fix what you broke.
Anonymous User6/22/2009 8:45 AM
What this article fails to mention is the race of the thugs and we all know what race they are. It is time to focus on the obvious racial problems of these thugs.

Socrates - its so sad to read about your racist reasons for crime. Crime is crime... and no philosophical reasoning in this world can justify it. They need to be tougher on criminals and thats the only way that our beautiful country will be safe and saved.

We all know, that being in a state of ignorance, is a bliss in itself, and its exactly because its a bliss, that ignorance is the preferred option. Making the separation between ignorance and awareness is made difficult by this very same bliss, a bliss that Stephen seems to be enjoying. The origin of my opinion is through the simple exhaustion of alternatives. How do I know that I have exhausted all alternatives, through life's experiences. South Africa is a fundamentally divided society, in terms of its politics, its races and its economics. This is why it is has reference to the rainbow nation. Obviously this may apply to many other countries. Dissecting its unique South African character, is interesting. On the the one hand you have the lower social group/class participating in a production based economy, mining, manual construction labour etc and on the other, you have mostly whites using a transfer based economy, such as banking, advertising insurance etc. In a production based economy, trade between individual occurs based on physical goods and needs. Occupations and practices in a transfer based economy, offer nothing in terms of physical needs, but rather things that you need to have because of the way the system has developed. The distribution of the population, between these 2 economic categories, and along racial and social lines, is visibly evident throughout most of South Africa. Manual labor consumes a workers daily life in a production based economy. The lack of an equivalent amount of manual labor, in a transfer based economy, creates a fundamental difference of opinion between participants and their respective incomes. This is the imbalance I refer to, in a system where one persons effort, is somehow valued or regarded as being less worthy than another. Participants in a transfer based economy have mostly been able to buy whatever they need, instead of having to produce it themselves. The accumulated wealth, of one group at the expense of another, will naturally destroy itself through this simple fact. Somewhere along the line, in white South Africa, a cultural impediment became a norm, a norm that emphasized the importance of being a chief , rather than becoming a regular indian. Making money, at any cost, became more important than any other moral and cultural value. Presently, there is a chaotic migration of participants between economies and between countries. The net result, will be an inevitable void in the production economy. What people should be thinking about.! How many transfer based participants(mostly white) could maintain their present lifestyles, if for some reason the production sector collapsed.

This shouldn't even be on the news. It is a bit of stating the obvious, not? A more sensational headline would be " Lion supporters didn't get robbed in South-Africa". On the other hand, it seems very strange that it always happens to the Poms. Maybe you should stay in public places and not chase after ladies of the night, as we all know you poms like doing it. You are more likely to get robbed in or around brothels than say inside Sandton Squire.

I See Socrates , It Is Again The Evil That Is APARTHEID and Not The Common Criminal Behaviour Of All Of These Crimes That Are Committed- HANG THE BASTARDS Then They Cannot Do It Again
Jaykay6/21/2009 10:09 AM
This is only the start dear foreign visitors...Brace yourselves and hold on to your cameras/wallets! I guess I might catch a World Cup game or two in Australia. The right and honorable thing would be to move th 2010 World Cup to a first wold country where the fans would be safe to spend their money!
Theo6/21/2009 10:00 AM
Now looks like the "poor Egyptians" actually got ripped off by the hookers they were partying with in one of the rooms of their hotel. Perhaps somebody should have advised them that paying hookers is a criminal offence in SA? Choose to become part of the solution and not the problem, and perhaps the crime will die out naturally. And stop using every opportunity to slag off my country. I got robbed in Rome during the 1990 World Cup. Does not mean that I think Italy is a place beset by crime?
Justin6/21/2009 9:19 AM
"He was punched in the nose when he tried to grab one of the robbers' guns, according to the report." What on earth was the guy thinking? Do people really think such acts against multiple gunmen will turn out, he way it does in movies? Come on... I honestly think Europeans are so cotton-balled they've lost touch of common sense.

Thanks Stephen, I'm glad you dont live here either. What we need is constructive, positive insight in how to stop this blight of crime, not external, emotional comments that justify your reason for leaving.
Anonymous User6/21/2009 9:04 AM
Why am I not surprised? I lived abroad for 8 years and never had 1 incident in relation to crime. I shipped back all my belongings I gathered in that time period and quess what...Everything was stolen incl photos, letters from family. Is the only way forward to become a vigilante?? Noone else is doing anything and its just getting worse...
Brian6/21/2009 8:30 AM
In this country you have to go beyond street wise and continually pray for God's protection and guidance. Robbery is the gentle part, so if you just get robbed, actually you lucky.
Brian6/21/2009 8:21 AM
Why did the previous president build a R90 000 000 security wall around his house, makes one think. In this country you have to go beyond street wise and continually pray for God's protection and guidance.

Now the whole world can c what a lovely place South Africa is for a crimenal. You can rob, kill and rape, but do not spit on the side walk, then you are in for it. If I had the choice, these buggers will be hanged, make an example off.
Jock 6/21/2009 3:24 AM
Socrates- i totally agree with what you said. Brilliant article. Unfortunately majority of people are very ignorant therefore they will not understand..... Cheers :) Div
Nicholas6/21/2009 2:25 AM
Unfortunately when anything happens in South Africa, due to the intense scrutiny and previously associations we get labeled with the crime issue. At least no one was seriously hurt. I have only ever been a victim of crime in the UK (Robbery), USA (Robbery) and in Australia (Vandalism and Robbery). I never felt unsafe in those countries, as I do in South Africa, due to the constant crime focus. All we can hope for is that the authorities respond when these things happen. As previously said, I think though the disparages between rich and poor will keep feeding the supply of people to the crime networks and the previous military experienced personnel will keep managing these networks. Extreme violent crime is the difference between SA and other countries. We also always tend to focus on what is wrong with or in SA not what is right or going well.
Stephen Gold6/21/2009 1:53 AM
So what Socrates is saying is that while the crime itself is not right, it's justified in order to restore imbalances of the past. What an idiot! My advice to people wanting to come to SA for the world cup: Stay away if you value your life & possessions. BTW the Rugby world cup in 1995 was a success because crime was nowhere near as bad as it is now. This Soccer world cup next year is going to be a field day for the criminals in SA. The tourists will be like lambs to the slaughter. Glad I don't live in SA anymore.

I am not surprised. Visitors watch out, better still - don't come here !!! Welcome to my parlour, said the spider to the fly...
michael6/21/2009 12:56 AM
Robbery is, as some of the writers have said, a problem in any country in the world. The big difference in South Africa is the violence that is associated with the robbery, in how many countries have you heard of people being burnt on the face with a hot iron just to get money. The crime here is savage which overseas visitors will not be used to, and the first such incident will become big headlines overseas and then the whole 2010 tournament will continue under a negative cloud. Every visitor must be warned about being followed home, they must be warned about walking in streets with money, cameras, cellphones, iPods showing. We all take precautions because we are used to being victims. Innocent visitors here to enjoy a sports tournament should not think life here is the same as at home. They will be welcomed by most of the country and helped to enjoy their visit, but they MUST be informed of the realities of life here so that an incident is not unexpected. Definitely not wanted, but can be handled better if it is expected. Writers in this column who say 'This is Africa' so expect what happens in Africa are so narrow minded they don't seem to care that if serious violence does occur, the world will forget about us after the World Cup and never give us the chance to host any such event again. Do you really want to give those countries that said Africa can't handle such an event the satisfaction of being right ?? Socrates, I think you
Drakkar6/21/2009 12:47 AM
Even the criminals need warm up events before they are truly ready to fully showcase their talents at the biggest stage.... the soccer world cup!
Nandipha6/20/2009 11:43 PM
Its a pity that we have criminal elements lurking amingst a majority of law abiding South Afrucans. However, crime is nit a uniquely South African scurge, & our media should stop pretending as such. 2010 will be the most amazing thing that happened to this country since 1994 & media & white SA should embrace it & stop with the negativity & small mindness of translating every obstacle that this country to an example of African(specifically Bkack SA) failure. Confed Cup had been a huge success with only 1 incident regarding the Egypt team & 2010 is going to be a resounding success, already 93000 tickets have been bought by Americans(FIFA.com) so far so those who think their constant twiterring & blogging negativity online abt our beautiful country will just have to realize the WC is of such magnitude that their petty self interested whining will put no deny to it's success Woza 2010 woza!

Perhaps it will take South Africa losing the right to host the 2010 World Cup due to crime, for our government to wake the f.... up! It would be a real set back for our country and economy, but maybe it is also necessary. We shall see what happens!!

Wherever, you have an apparent display of wealth, as in life in Constantia or Sandton, existing alongside palpable poverty as in Alexandria or Mitchell's plain, a real disparity exists. This insidious disparity, is a fundamental cause of what we read and see in the papers. Solving it, is never going to be easy, despite what politicians may say. South Africa's suffering is not unique, nor is she alone in the encyclopedia of world history. This scenario has plagued many countries over the centuries. Think of the revolutions in France and Russia, and the movements of malcontents to the New World. However what is unique to South Africa is the fact that white South Africans on the whole, conveniently continue to ignore this fact, whereas others colors in the spectra of people living in this nation, have little time on their hands to contemplate their annual holidays destinations, their cycle training programs or landscaping their gardens, or facebooking and twittering while hanging out at the nearest traffic light and witnessing the extraordinary wealth of their fellow citizens. Indigenous white South Africans in general, are and have always been fortunate enough to have lived a life, free from physical hardship, that was based entirely on a system of on an unequal distribution of things, based on ones color. Things here refer to pretty much most aspects of daily life. The criminal and violent frontier between these factions appears to be an arena for resolving imbalances. The world cup 2010 is being staged in this same arena, and the rules of this game are going to be somewhat unfamiliar to some of the international participants. Some elements of some Football loving nations, are notorious for all the wrong reasons. A word of caution to all these international football travelers. Try to not get arrested or locked up. The in house services are shabby, morally and legally, and you risk receiving the now infamous "slow puncher " from some yet to be tried disgruntled habitual criminal, who, by virtue of his own local lifes experience, is incapable of differentiating between local South African whites, European whites, or shades of any color. The pre programming has been done. This routine cannot be changed or rewritten. You will end up paying the price for something that is far greater than any disturbance you might cause at a match. The money generated before and during this event might have been better spent elsewhere, somewhere more deserving on this planet, why not on saving the river dolphins in the Mekong delta?
Anonymous User6/20/2009 6:27 PM
"Authorities, however, say football fans will be safe." ...what a laugh!

Pity that the goverment is only concerned about it's image internationally- doesn't give a darm about the hundreds of innocent SA -cans mugged every day in similar incidents all over the country daily,as long as it doesn't make the international press- everything is fine- So please all muggers, criminals, hijackers and murderers- leave the foreign tourists alone until after the worldcup 2010- not good for the image of the country.

One crime is one too many. According to the TV broadcast of the 1st Test, there were 20,000 Lions supporters. If only 10,000 were tourists, 4 out of 10,000 is not bad. I was robbed at Heathrow. I doubt if it made the UK press

Some advice for would be tourists coming to South Africa for the next few years, If you do find yourself in the same situation as these British guys, do not retaliate in any way, rather just do as they say and don't try to fight back, you'll only provoke the bastards by doing this. Let them take your belongings if they want to, as long as you stay alive. jewelery can always be bought again, but lives cannot. welcome to the south african way of life! :-)

I would like to appeal to my fellow country man not to spoil this event, our orgainsing comitee worked very hard to get us where we are , it is a once off oppotunity that may never happen in our life time. To the media and our bitter expats please stop dragging your own country in the mud.To fellow expats. whether you like it or not you are foreigners and outsiders where you are and you will always be known as a south african. The media for once should concentrate on reporting the positive side of our country ,it hurts to see even the smallest incident making headline news in europe just because it happened in South africa. I have witnessed worst crimes, racism, corruption and plain stupidity such as vandalizing motor cars and public facilities in Europe. I have been a victim of crime in Europe not just once but 3 times in a space of 6yrs I ve spent there. I cannot condone what happened to our visitors it is a shame and personaly I feel small about it, we hope it will be delt with accodingly, those thuggs do not represent the south african people we hope you will meet more friendly and welcoming south africans during your stay.

Truth of the matter is that reports like this are just the beginning. Unfortunately, the "authorities" can't even keep ordinary South Africans safe and naive foreign tourists carrying cash and expensive electronic equipment are going to be easy pickings for the criminal elements in our society.
