Boks on Tour

I'm not violent - Bakkies

Bakkies Botha (Gallo Images)

Toulouse - South Africa's chief enforcer Bakkies Botha has insisted that what goes on during a game of rugby was neither "violence" nor anything to do with his normal life.

Botha, standing 2.02m tall and weighing 118kg, has built a reputation on being the hard-man of a hard Springbok team, renowned for using his enormous physical strength in clearing out rucks and putting in some bone-crunching tackles.

That has seen him run into trouble, most recently during the British and Irish Lions tour in the summer when he was banned for two weeks for a "dangerous charge", having hit a ruck that left Welsh prop Duncan Jones with a dislocated shoulder.

But the 30-year-old, capped 63 times by South Africa and in the line-up to face France at the Municipal Stadium here on Friday, said he was really "quite a relaxed guy".

"A lot of people think I bite my wife and kick the kids," Botha joked Thursday. "But I'm really a very different person off the pitch to the player I am on it.

"Someone must really rock the boat to get me going."

Botha also dispelled talk about the levels of "violence" in games.

"For me, violence means guns and knives. A game for me means physicality, and physicality gives me goosebumps, the idea of going around shifting rucks around the field," he said, praising fellow lock Victor Matfield with whom he forms the best second-row pairing in world rugby.

"Victor brings a calmness to the game and hopefully we'll keep going until the 2011 World Cup," Botha said.

"It's like a relationship we have and we must work on it every day.

"Victor calls the line-outs but I can read his body language and I know without him saying what he'll call.

"We still push each other and know there's room for improvement and especially with things to achieve."

The 32-year-old Matfield, who spent six months at Toulon and who will win his 90th cap against France, admitted: "Maybe I'm the brain and Bakkies is the brawn.

"I enjoy playing with Bakkies. He does all the hard work and allows me to play!

"Bakkies brings physicality and a hard edge that the Boks need. There's not a player in the world who can hit a ruck like him.

"I really hope we can go on for two more years and get better and with every year work harder to improve," said Matfield, man-of-the-match in the final when South Africa won the 2007 World Cup in France.

"But first things first - we haven't beaten France on French soil since 1997 and it would be a great achievement if we could do that."

Botha also had a parting word of warning for Sebastian Chabal, the hirsute French lock or No 8 who is on the replacements' bench for Friday's clash.

"I think I know who he is," he said. "The man with the nice, straight hair... Maybe I'll meet him in a ruck or two."

Vuilgat schmuilgat! Bakkies, jy's 'n yster, my maat!

I just wish for once on these forums people could actually discuss the quality of the article and express their opinion in a professional manner. Without profanity and making inflammatory statements. In the end all that happens is one person makes an outrageous statement and everybody reacts to that persons statement. The article is left behind and everybody gets insulted. From English speaking people to Afrikaans people. Rugby supporters and teams. Believers and the church. People living in cities and people living in the "platteland". On and on and on it goes... Can't the rest of us ignore people like "HAHAHA!" and "Sure ou Bakkies sure". Neither of them even responded to any of our comments. I am sure that both of them (and note that they were the 1st two people to comment) only write those comments because they get a kick out of the fact that the rest of the forum mostly revolves around their comments and not the article/event/news etc. Just my opinion...
fuzzy11/13/2009 1:54 PM
I am not even a bulls fan but acknowledge that both Matfield and Botha are immense. Botha plays his role to perfection and is often unfairly penalized/carded by the referee's. give the froggies horns fellows

Forums are meant for opinions, you dont have to be experts, peers or whatever. You just come here read an article and state how you feel about it. You people really need to wake up and smell the roses. It is just some idiots opinion, if you get upset about it, then you are only reacting that way because you feel there is some truth in it. SO WAKE UP....

To Arthur I would rather keep my mouth shout then to say that Bakkies and Matsfield are Dooossses, show me two other plays that can take on them. May be i must just understand that if you are a Wp suopport you are down and out just like your team and the rest of your supporters, like you guys booo Morne Steyn , when he has helped the natinal side to win number of games this year , but i bet you that you wont booo him in the green and gold jerrsy. You are as down and out as your teams trophy cabnit that is so full of dust that you would have to get truck to come and remove the dust. oh sorry they dont have to do that because the BULLS had taken it already to fill up with there trophies that we have one this year. I only usually go out with 2 or 3 mates and usually there are guys {always speaking the taal} who want to box, but only if they outnumber us at least 2 to 1, its only then I take my jacket off and they realize Im 112KG, 1,9M tall with a body fat of +-10. Im pretty big hey, oh and I do boxing...So in many ways I agree with you, LET THEM COME...

Rugby is a contact sport...if you dont like the physicality go watch netball or soccer. stop whining about how physical the guy or the sport is. you probably never set foot on a rugby field in your life. rugby isnt for sissies. im a all black support but bakkies is a legend.

Bakkies is a sporting legend who has attained the highest recognition in world sport! Only negative underachievers would bad mouth him.

As A WP supporter, I'd have to say Bakkies and Matfield are the best in the biz. Bakkies is a huge presence on the field. You sometimes wonder if he's not enough to deal with an entire scrum on his own.

Appears that you have a problem with the fact that Bakkies and a number of other Springboks are guys who are not afraid to acknowledge they are Christians? Maybe you should visit the "kerk" once or twice so that you can get rid of your bad attitude and anger. As for giving Bakkies a "snotklap" in a bar why don't you set that up but please remember to give us all an invite so that we can come and watch you back up your "tough guy talk"....

Methinks11/13/2009 9:13 AM
I have met both Bakkies and Victor quite a few times in the line of my job - both are actually really nice guys off the field. No airs and graces or nonsense.
G11/13/2009 9:11 AM
@Impi. Ja. So, what's your point? The man's a legend.
Methhinks11/13/2009 9:10 AM
I am a Sharks supporter, but mostly a Boks and rugby supporter. Bakkies and Victor are great players - that is obvious. Stuff provincialism where it belongs - a thing to be enjoyed on a Saturday morning with mates. This is Bok Rugby. Beside, I think that HAHAHA got exactly what he wanted - stir the pot and you will get a reaction - which is what the moron clearly wanted.
Charles11/13/2009 9:05 AM
Bakkies ... you a 'gomgat' and the fake show of praying on his knee on the field is just another 'marketing ploy' I think Joost was taught at the same marketing 'school' to draw attention to yourself. If you REALLY so serious about your religion and christianity .... do it in the 'binne-kamer' like the Bible teaches us .... not on the field and then act like a maniac afterwards .... IF he was such a good player he should think more about what it does to the rest of the team if he sits in the SIN BIN .... NOT very clever this oke ... lights are on but no-one home ...
del11/13/2009 9:02 AM
HAHAHA see you in the bar - no holds barred
THUGGISH Bakkies11/13/2009 9:02 AM
Only a blind man can see cleanliness and physicality in Bakkies' game. The man personifies violence. No player is as stupid and shows unsporting behaviour on the field of play than Bakkies in world rugby today. It's amazing how BB's supporters in particular went on about Giteau's tackle on Du Preez and turned a blind eye on Bakkies' behaviour everytime on the field. Bakkies is a criminal. MAY THE REF RED CARD THIS THUG TONIGHT!
Dean11/13/2009 8:58 AM

How brave of you to make comments through a computer screen being the little atheist nerd that you are. Your comments are ridiculous. superdarius11/13/2009 8:11 AM
I am a Bulls supporter and I love rugby, but I can't stand Bakkies Botha because of an incident I had with him... But he is a GREAT player and no one can take that away from him... Him and Victor Matfield is excellent players and them both lead the Springboks to World Cup victory, the Bulls to Super14 AND Currie Cup victory. I agree with all the professional rugby critics in the world that these two players are the best in the world.
Mark11/13/2009 8:04 AM
@hahaha - you have lots to say when you behind a computer and don't use your name. In case you've forgotten rugby is a physical game, but then I guess you have never played the game so don't have a clue. I'm betting you are a underachiever still living with your mom and can't stand the sight of someone else being being successful. Just because you have no sporting ability, and probably no life isn't our fault. I would love to meet you in a bar, but better would be watching Bakkies (without friends or rules 'protecting' him) cleaning your pipes. Enjoy watchng the rugby in the comfort of mommy you chop.
Rob N11/13/2009 7:55 AM
Bakkies does nothing different to other players who attempt to clear out rucks and tackle the living daylights out of the opposition. He just does it better, bigger, meaner and with more style than most of them. Sure he takes cheap shots but hey he recieves more than he gives but you don't hear him complaining do you? We are not talking about ballroom dancing this is rugby after all.
Pine11/13/2009 7:45 AM
@ 10:38 & 10:41. What the HELL are you talking about. Are you guys still sour because Bakkies, Victor and the Bulls won every single trophy this year. If you doubt, even for a second, the worth of these two guys to South African rugby, then you are an absolute idiot ! Whoever "HAHAHA" is, I would pay good money to see you in a bar with Bakkies. Even "without his friends and the protection of the rules in rugby" he will probably fold you in half while still holding his beer in the other hand !
LOL11/13/2009 7:40 AM
Well mr hahaha, before you criticize anyone else's brain capacity make sure you know how to spell, (the word is quiet, not "quite" you dummy!) I wish there was a law against idiots, but we really have to have a lot of tolerance.
Werner Beytel11/13/2009 7:39 AM
@HAHAHA! I would really like to see you go up to Bakkies and say all these things to his face. But since you don't even have the guts to use your real name it is probably just wishful thinking on my part. Seeing that your bitter diatribe has a distinct anti-Bull flavour and you refer to Pretoria and surrounds as the "platteland", I guess that you hail from the fairest Cape. So you lost in the Currie Cup semi-final, get over it. Rather use your sour grapes to make wine.
Riaan11/13/2009 7:36 AM
You go Bakkies!!!!! Maak skoon!!! maak skoon!!!
Vic J11/13/2009 7:36 AM
Why does Bakkies pray before a game. Praying he lasts more than 10 min. on the field before being sent off.
@HAHAHA!11/13/2009 7:34 AM
Your level of comment tell us all about the person you are HAHAHA
@HAHAHA11/13/2009 7:33 AM
You obviously watch rugby from the kitchen. I don’t like the BB’s but Bakkies and Victor are great players. And your comment about Victor was uncalled for he has done far more in life and is probably more successful than you would ever be. I want to watch rugby on TV not touch rugby. If you want to see something less physical google ballet.
IDIOTS11/13/2009 7:30 AM
The last two idiots who have commented on the best lock pairing that world rugby has ever seen, bar none, are grossly misguided and deserve to be banned from forums such as this! Get a grip on yourselves - you have watched these two players bring glory to the team and to the country in past times! I am assuming you are now defactors sitting on the green sheep mounds of Australia!
Bok Bok11/13/2009 7:26 AM
"Sure ou Bakkies sure" die persoon weet nie waar van hy praat nie. Hy speel seker tafel tennis vir n lewe, pasop dat jy nie n hamstring trek nie hoor, Bakkies eet hulle op.
Erik11/13/2009 7:15 AM
Bakkies your a legened and thats true for the bulls as well, you would be amazed how many German people watch rugby, especially bulls rugby and the Springboks. You have a vast number of supporters under the german people. They appreciate your full harted play. Bakkies uber all's, spielen schur schon!
Monty11/13/2009 7:14 AM
For all the bloggers you have a lot to say about the Bulls Dynamic Duo, who are obviously a Sharks, WP or Cheetahs supporter, you would not be singing the same tune if they were playing for your team. Accept that whoever they play for they are icons and heroes of today and will be immotilsed in the rugby journals of the future. Lions Fan
@HAHAHA11/13/2009 7:07 AM
I'm from the "platteland" as you call it. So actually your insulting everyone from there. That just shows me who the real yerk is!!! hahaha goes the one with the last laugh.... oh and by the way, just shows that you actually know nothing about rugby, and I guess you are from the "dronkgat" WP gang.
chez11/13/2009 7:06 AM
Chuck Norris fears only one man - Bakkies Botha. Bakkies fears no-one! Go Bokke, Go Bakkies. We love the way you play.

@HAHAHA! & Sure ou Bakkies sure!11/13/2009 6:45 AM
Do I sense some jealousy in the air? I reckon both of you are gay Shark supporters who are probably unemployed. Maybe you two should meet up, then you can discuss how you are going to change the game of rugby by removing all aggressiveness from the game so that little pissies like yourself can participate too. If you have a problem with the way Bakkies play then I propose you stop watching rugby and consider taking up soccer. Both of you sound like little girls! "Boohoohoo boohoohooo, Bakkies is a bully, he's ugly with me, he plays to rough with the other big boys, boohoohoo!" And again @HAHAHA!, I would love to see anybody try to give Bakkies a "snotklap", I would love to see you give Bakkies 'n "snotklap". What proud rugby supporter complains about hard hits, physicality and intimidation on a rugby pitch??? You two (HAHAHA! & Sure ou Bakkies sure!) are truly pathetic! Do yourself a favour and take up ballet... take some advise from old Snorra, because rugby is obviously not for you!
Dirk 11/13/2009 6:41 AM
Hy speel soos Moaner van Heerden, "My bal, is my bal. Jou bal, is my bal."
Michael11/13/2009 6:41 AM
Yes old Bakkies. You are a very hard player, many times on the wrong side of law. Then finally you get caught and then the school arm band thing. Silly man, you do go out to put pain on others. That is why you are called the enforcer. maybe Chabil will clip your wings. I have noticed that when some hits you hard in a game you do go quite for the rest of the game, maybe you can dish it out but dont seem to be able to take it. Regading your personal life - I do not for a minute believe you are rough with your family. I wish people will leave our sportsmens private lives out of the papers. In closing Bakkies, you have brought much joy to me in your games and I would hate to be on the receiving end of your clean out.
Rascal11/13/2009 6:36 AM
Dude i really dont think Bakkies is a going to sit in the bar like you and look for a barney!!He is too much of a gentleman and yes he will kick you into toutch with a right hand to left ear.Never forget without him the boks probably would have lost many a game.Go have another wisky or beer dude and think about your vuilgat comment.YOU GO BAKKIES!!
Hein - Centurion11/13/2009 6:35 AM
@HAHAHA. You are an absolute moron an clearly showing it. You most probably only got 5% of your brain capacity left. It is so easy to hide behind HAHAHA, I bet you do not have the guts to come out in the open and tell that to either Bakkies or Victor straight to their faces. You are a gutless, brainless fool. I know both these guys and Bakkies for sure is a gentle giant. If you wtached the final and the "Lap of honour" that the Bulls did after the game you would have noticed Bakkies walking around the field with his little daughter holding on to his hand. So take your snotty remarks and stuff them!!!!!!!

Thanks for the rugby related comment there. If you are unable to comment (as per the forum purpose) on their actual game (as acknowledged by peers, opponents and the rugby world at large) and only feel comfortable throwing insults and 'guesswork', then perhaps you should rather hit the Huisgenoot forum yourself. They are both exceptional players, highly respected (by people who'se opinions actually mean something world-wide) and a credit to the Springbok team. I could write that even if I was not a Bok suppporter, but thankfully I am. But always a supporter of rugby first, which means I can enjoy performances and players from around the world. It's quite a chip you have on your shoulder...
Monty from Down Under11/13/2009 5:10 AM
Ask Wallaby Brendon Cannon how he was bitten by Bakkies, I echo the fact this is a Bakkies you are a “vuilgat” with a laager mentalty.
richard11/13/2009 3:09 AM
What is the matter with you two haters? All you spew out of your mouths is hate and spite and based on the fact that Bakkies plays for the Bulls and lives in Pretoria. Are you both losers from WP or OFS? Its this kind of pettiness and provincialism that has divided Afrikaners and made your enemies rule over you. Its the reason you lost the Boer war. My advice: grow up and turn your venom on your REAL enemies or you'll be extinct soon!

Rugby is not a sport for pissies! So climb off your pantsy high-horses and get a bloody grip! We need guys like Bakkies to stoke the fire a bit; withoug players like him rugby would become so professional and robotic that it will lose the characters of the game. And he is not a dirty player! He is hard and tough and yes occassionally he runs into trouble, but for goodness sake which forwards do not once in a while get themselves into trouble. He is a legend and we will miss him more than Victor. Mark my words! Go Bakkies!! (Btw, I'm a staunch WP-supporter)

Bakkies & Victor julle is BAKGAT!!

Just had a look at some utube footage of the French Team. They have big centres in the mould of JDV. And they intercept as well. They love a wide open, fast game. However, they do not have a good kicking game. If we can starve them of ball and no make silly mistakes, we have a chance. I'm feeling a bit uneasy about the cockiness I detect in the Springbok camp.

Being hard physically is great, and something Bakkies can do. Unfortunately he also has a reputation for taking cheap shots, and there is nothing tough or brave about that!

some real "objective" views there by "HAHAHA & Sure ou Bakkies sure" - it's a shame that your hatred for the Blue Bulls has blinded your view when it comes to seeing the value and quality these guys bring to the Boks... as for having a go at their family life and church really shows your class!!!

Gerald11/12/2009 10:51 PM
Waaroor praat julle twee? What are you talking about? He is a great player and instrumental to the Boks success. It will be a bitter day he has to call it time.

Sir, you play rugby with real heart and a passion that might be considered (by some) to be borderline at times, but you are a true rugby giant and wished you could play ice hockey!! We have the same form of enforcer on the ice, but there is no crying like we see on these blogs when things get a bit heated in the game. Mr. Botha, we global fans love your style of play and hope to see you at the WC in 2011 - rock on!!!!
So hamba boetie en vat ou Spies spiertjies saam ASSEBLIEF!
HAHAHA!11/12/2009 10:38 PM
Another “kerkman” from the BBulls. Victor if you think that you have brains please think again mate. You might be able to work out lineout calls but you have spent the last 10 years working on that...and only that! The old story. Like to be seen as the gentle giant, so typical Bulls mentality. Next thing is a story in the Huisgenoot where Bakkies wife tells everyone how gentle he is and that he loves playing with kids and blablabla! Bakkies you are a “vuilgat” par none and if I was a ref I would card you in every single game. Typical *bully. He will be very quite in a bar without his friends and the protection of the rules in rugby. In a bar he will get a “snotklap” if he tries his s*t.Just another stupid BB who will never be able to adjust in any other environment than in Pretoria or some or other town in the “platteland”.

We all know that FIFA are the head honchos of the beautiful game. They set out laws that govern the sport and we are supposed to fall in line and follow. Now I agree that there must be rules in place for everyone to follow but what I don’t get, is how FIFA are currently strutting around like they own South Africa, says Mr Controversy.
