Dublin - Ireland coach Declan Kidney hailed the contribution of former Bok assistant coach Gert Smal in plotting the Springboks’ downfall at Croke Park on Saturday.

Ireland won the match 15-10 and their lineout in particular, caused the Boks serious trouble in the first half. Smal is the Irish forwards coach and no doubt referred to his old Bok playbook to upset their lineouts.

The visitors by contrast dominated the scrums, but with so few in the match it was the lineout that had the biggest impact.

“I feel so lucky to be working with Gert because he is a world class coach and his contribution to this victory shouldn’t go unrecorded,” Kidney said afterwards.

“He is certainly getting our lineout in good order and I think the lads from both sides will have a laugh tonight about some similarities between them.

“Gert’s efforts were great because he wasn’t feeling in the best health and he still managed to put in the analysis in the early part of the week when he should have been resting up.

“He has a great work ethic.”

Bok skipper John Smit admitted that Smal might have played a role in the Springbok’s unusual struggle at the lineout.

“It was ironic today because the two departments that usually win us Test matches (the lineout and kicking) were the ones that cost us.

“We know Gert well and Ireland would have been well prepared for our lineouts. We lost a big advantage today.” But on the plus side South Africa’ scrums, with the return of BJ Botha to tighthead, were dominant and destroyed the Irish pack in the first hour.

Botha made a mess of Irish loosehead Cian Healy, but when he was withdrawn 10 minutes into the second half and from then on the Irish managed to regain some parity in the set piece.

“It was nice to have BJ back and we did some serious damage there,” Smit said. “BJ’s presence created an impetus and we managed to get some penalties out of the game which was nice to see.”

The difference is: ..Gert Smal is a proven quality coach... ...PdV is a quota coach...

One thing some rugby supporters don't seem to realise is thet rugby is an International sport. The point is to go out and display your talents, be it as a player or a coach, to the rugby world. Rugby does not revolve around South Africa and individuals that go abroad are not primarily(hopefully, if they hace any common sense) going there to make a point about the South African structures. they are going to further their careers, earn more money or for the love of the game. this country has too many good athletes and coaches of rugby that not everyone can cope. More players and coaches will go abroad in future purely because of this sport growing and we happen to have the an over flow of talent that is impossible to manage. Imagine Dan Carter playing fly half for the Sharks and Pierre Spies teaming up with Richie McCaw at the Crusaders. this is the future and thinkig backwards is what SA and the Southern hemisphere are good at. the evolution of rugby is inevitable

@wow! we also have Gerald Bosch as assistant coach in Perth perfecting the kicking for Western Force (and i would not surprised if he is also helping the Aussies) ?

wow. this takes the sting out of the loss. this is wonderful for South African rugby. u have Brendan Venter at Saracens and Gert Smal at Ireland. Saracens is number one in the English league. Ireland won the the 6 nations. wonderful how South Africa is making a positive contribution to rugby. so somewhere in many of the major rugby trophies, RSA has been involved, good stuff. both Gert Smal and Brendan Venter are former Springboks and RSA coaches. so moral of the story, learn your rugby in RSA and go to the UK. you'll get a job and come home for holidays and the family LOL

Erg teleurgesteld. Waar pas PdeV hellium dan nou in??? SA moet hom maar regmaak vir meer verlore in die toekoms as hulle voortgaan met hul kwota en geforseerde representation in die bok keuses. Kyk ook maar na die ekonomie, eskom, krygkor as en so kan mens aangaan.

Well, I do believe South Africans are bad losers (but who does sport to loose anyway?), but the Irish played well and it is good for Irish Rugby and International Rugby BJ played well and proved a point that BJ should be prop along with Beast. Who is the best hooker Bismarck du Plessis or John Smith? Another question that can be asked is, who is the next captain of SA? Div needs to select the right players and by this, I also mean the best players for that position, otherwise you strangle the momentum of the team. This end of year tour should be there to identify new exciting players and blend them in to the Boks accordingly. Remember the season is getting longer and longer and players need a rest every now and then. Another question that should be asked is, did the Boks peak too soon, like the All Blacks in 2005, two years before the World Cup 2007?

Look at the tour results, and you will see the hand of discarded ex SA players and coaches in the Springbok downfall. Well done Brendon, Gert etc. Pity Mellet could not get the Italians to drill them as well. I am happy for those guys selling their skills and getting the opportunity to show up the current situation in SA Rugby, and getting the money and recognition they deserve.

Ireland not half as good as the Boks were trully shocking not even to mention that sub-human called Nigel Owens. What a complete and utter disgrace to humanity and the refereeing fraternity!

Johnny-Boy and fellow fancy cats like "Eye" Burger, and "Bakkiies help my asb." Matfield should now pull the same dissapearing act they do in every match they appear ( not play). And dissapear for good.

Hey marius, we are the world champions, tri nation champions, beat the Lions, Super 14 champs - so grow up. What the hell do you want? - Strauli ? - the Bulls players let us down, so what we had a bad game againt a very good side, and Div has a great record - are you just a racist? - ps the SUN DID RISE THIS MORNING, so deal with it - is only a game.

I thought it was Steyn that cost SA the game on this occasion, he will never learn. You can't beat a side by offering them all your hard worn ball. That tactic is over and is going to cost us dearly. Without his kicking game he really is very ordinary and quite frankly his tackling is just embarrasing. One on one against Butch James Steyn would be walloped and tackled out the game. He has potential but he has shown that he hasn't the mind to ever control a game like a flyhalf should.
