Boks' drinks offer declined

Johannesburg - Springbok coach Peter de Villiers suggested that the Irish players probably didn’t like South African beer as the controversy over the refusal by British & Irish Lions players to share drinks with the Springboks earlier this year became a hot topic of debate.

Bok skipper John Smit revealed in his newly released autobiography that an invitation to the Lions to share drinks after the first two Tests was declined.

De Villiers was asked whether it had ensured that there was bad blood between the teams prior to Saturday’s match against Ireland at Croke Park. He downplayed the situation.

“The bad blood thing is something you guys [the UK and Irish media] came up with,” De Villiers said at a news conference. “We extend an invitation to every team after a game to come join us in the dressing room for a beer. The Lions never accepted. Maybe they don’t like South African beer.

“There was nothing extraordinary that happened on the field that would warrant this ‘bad blood’ thing. Most reports have been overhyped. The media over here (in Ireland and Britain) are just looking for things to pick at.”

There was also a suggestion that the match would be especially physical, but De Villiers again dismissed those claims.

“The physical thing is something that’s also blown out of proportion,” De Villiers. “You show me a rugby game that’s not physical. If you took physicality out of it, what would the game be?

“If anyone loses they are going to be disappointed, and they’re going to feel great if they win. We don’t all have the same mental approach though, and so some people will move on right away after a loss, while some may take two or three days to recover.”

what are the 'excuses' if we loose this one ? to many games played ? the singer ? the ref ? already the SA press saying the gale force winds will disrupt the 'boks

Me tinks we gonna lose dis one.

Some nice comments coming from the Irish supporters here, and yep, it will be a close contest Saturday. This is the last game for the Boys so hopefully they will give it a good go, I have noticed a lot of lethargic play recently but thats expected after what they have acheived this year. So heres hoping the Boks draw in all the energy reserves and spank the Irish bottoms for even thinking that a win over us makes them the best team for 2009.....for a thought like that you can 'Poig Ma Thoin'....I think its said. cant wait for Saturday

I don't really get all the hate towards the Irish. No one has anything but respect for South Africa over here(Ireland). Please don't take our media as a representation of our country, just like PVD is right about the media. "Ireland don't count in the grand scale of things" I think you are in for a rude awakening, grand slam champions and our squad is in top shape with fighting for almost every position with class acts like Kearney, Earls, Fitzgerald, Healy, Sexton, Bowe all under 25. BOD is not a whinger and thats a ridiculous comment, he spoke out against PVD not condemning the eye gouge, how dare he. Anyway, I'm just surprised at the attitude towards the Irish, its quite funny the impression most of you have of us. Congrats on being the best team in the world at the moment and looking forward to playing you

Well said Irisher, Saturday's game is going to be a cracker!
Grant11/24/2009 1:20 PM
Go BOKKE, by the way people it wasnt O'Driscol who scored 'that' try it was Ronan O'Gara.
TRICOLOR11/24/2009 11:59 AM
Dammit, Irisher, now you have gone and burst our bubble.
Shamrock Master11/24/2009 11:57 AM
Let the Leprechauns show them how it's done ... C'mon Ireland !!!!
TRICOLOR11/24/2009 10:15 AM
I find it hugely amusing that we can make so much out of a Div remark. Now I understand how the money market works to ellicit unfunny remarks. we have been had again.
@Irisher11/24/2009 9:43 AM
You are clearly misisng the point about the invitation to accept an invite by the home team to share a beer after the game. If you had read the book maybe you would understand it in a better context. PLEASE go and read the book so that you get the point that John Smit was trying to make. You are right about one thing: THE GAME WILL BE GOOD on Saturday!!
SPRINGBOK FAN11/24/2009 9:14 AM
@johnnyboy. You are missing the point by 3 galaxies here. The point is that it is tradition and by snubbing tradition it just shows your bad sportsmanship. Even when the Boks lose we don't snub the opposition if they invite us for a drink. You are quite a stirrer hey J-boy? Well done with the good comeback PdV. The Irish are a bunch of morose gallinaceous troglodytes.

I'm so glad PDivvy is being appreciated, for a change. He's alright, straight forward, not PC, but he doesn't care. He gets on with his job. Good for him.
@SHORTS11/24/2009 9:10 AM
Windhoek is not beer, and ask yourself this question, why does the beer have a year shelf life, if there is no preservitives in it. you believe their slander campaign , the only way they can sell that stuff, me I drink all beer not fussy, but i do like a Pint of The black stuff, PDV is my favourite comedian at the momment
Mandlendoda11/24/2009 9:06 AM
Great responses to them Div now let's beat those pale ears on Sat,Go Bok
Skyhawk11/24/2009 7:17 AM
PDiddy Rocks........you awesome biscuit......
Shorts11/24/2009 6:49 AM
Perhaps the Lions were hoping for Windhoek - the ' green & gold ' beer ( with nothing else !!! ) ??
irisher11/23/2009 11:55 PM
In case people had forgotten, there was an invitation to attend a dinner that was turned down by the Boks. The Smit story about turning down beers came out two weeks ago. It ain't a story. These are minor matters. But people on here seem to mix up Irish and British media in SA - they're not the same - and they focus on different things. Bok man - if you don't like the Irish and you're living in Ireland - well you know that you can always leave - which would be a pity. But since you see it as 'their economy has gone bust' , you obviously don't think you belong or want to belong. PdV was funny in his responses - when he was asked to comment on the fact that he refused to condemn eye-gouging, he said that O'Driscoll was entitled to his opinion, just like half the population of Ireland who think O'Connell should be captain. It's not true but it's still very funny. I think he actually has an Irish sense of humour - it takes a while for a lot of you guys to get him. He's actually very smart, and has been responsibile for the Bok team being so good this year. Without him, SA would have had a very ordinary year. Look at what he has achieved. The British media are not looking for any angle to unsettle the Boks. The British media are focussed on Wales playing Australia and France playing New Zealand. The Boks are playing Ireland. The Irish media are doing their best to see if they can get an angle from the Boks and PdV is being quite smart in not giving them one - but he couldn't resist getting a few digs in. As he should have. You guys need to relax a little. The game will be good on Saturday. May the best team win.

I am converted.... P.Divy... during the lions tour you learnt the hard way about the media and how they try to increase readership by sensasionalism... and ever since you have improved in leaps and bounds...! .......It is my belief that by the time the next world cup comes along you will have also added to your experience (by trial & error )about the other aspects of the game, to make you the "full Package" , and win us the cup for a third time....!!! But for now good luck bokke....!! kick Leprechaun's butt (by a big Margin, so they don't cry foul, and ask for replay... hehehehehe)
Redge11/23/2009 10:33 PM
SNORMAN you are the MAN! GO BOKKE!
NGS11/23/2009 10:03 PM
Come on Boks. Make this the performance of the season and give the Irish a proper bok-klap. And then drink their beer afterwards as well.
ImpartialCanuck11/23/2009 9:23 PM
Seems like sour grapes if true! Although I have only ever played club rugby, I cannot ever recall a team rejecting an invitation for a drink afterwards - shows a lack of class!!! Anyhow, good PR work by Mr. de Villiers and do hope his selections match his reply to the arrogant British press. Hope the SA team are wary of the tactic that gave BOD his try last time around - noted that Wales employed a similar tactic this past weekend in their try against the Argies - thought their captain had also been told to talk to his team and Jones promptly took a quick tap? Anyhow, going to be a great tussle and hope the "Big Boks" are out for a clash against the embittered Irish - get over yourselves and give credit where it is due!!
Bok man11/23/2009 9:17 PM
Well said Divvy, you infuriate me with selections like Adi Jacobs but really amuse me with your way with words and sense of humour at times. A fine line between madness and genius? I live in Ireland and the national TV newsreader tonight remarked of Divvy: "There is a man with no small notion of himself." At least Divvy didn't make any terrible gaffes like Jake did, we'll never hear the end of that one. GC, I used to like the Irish too but salt of the earth Irish types went out of fashion with the Celtic Tiger which mistakenly led them to believe theirs was not a Third World country after all but the world's premier nation. Salt of the earth types may however be set to make a return in 10 years as their economy has gone bust.
Bok befok11/23/2009 9:11 PM
Well put Pikes. Keep up the good work. Those red necks are bad loosers. Good luck for Sat.
Viljoen11/23/2009 9:08 PM
Perhaps they thought it was going to be sorghum beer
BLOUBOK11/23/2009 8:47 PM
I have said it before and I will say it again. The B&I Lions of 2009 will forever be remembered as the whiners and moaners. Go BOKKE, demolish these irish whimps.
Touch Judge11/23/2009 8:33 PM
Hope the Boks have a good game - and win convincingly - that will be the end of that - beer drinking and bad blood - let the score board settle the dispute ! At least we know that the rugby players have got more oomph and backbone than our spineless - big talking - no delivering cricketers !! Also known as BMT - Something Arthur and Smith have no clue of !
GeePMB11/23/2009 8:12 PM
Well said PDiddy, The British media are looking for any angle to unsettle the Boks, so waht if they didn't have a post match beer, at least the hospitality was extended. If anything we have reason to be aggrieved over a certain O'Driscoll try that was given whilst our skipper was told to talk to his players, a try that cost us the match! Frankly, Ireland mean nothing in the big scheme of things. Like this tour is meaningless after such a successful season for the Boks.
GC11/23/2009 7:38 PM
Nice one Divie, I'm converted mate, used to have my reservations about you but heck, you can't argue with a comment like that. Wish I could have seen the reporters faces with that response. I always use to like the Irish rugby people but ever since we played them in 2004 and the Irish media twisting Jake Whites words I've lost all respect. Don't know what happened, the Irish rugby players always use to be humble salt of the earth types, nowadays they rate themselves as a bit of Prima donnas. I Rate BOD as a rugby player, off the field he moans about everything, same goes for O'gara except I don't rate him as a rugby player. Can't wait for Saturday
johnnyboy11/23/2009 7:19 PM
why is this an issue, i mean if you are going to have a drink after the game go on ahead and have a drink, why would the Lions feel like celebrating after a loss. There is plenty of beer in Ireland if Smit wants to have a beer
Pedro11/23/2009 7:16 PM
Well said PdV! Their press is the pits, so their players are petrified of doing anything that might get them bad press, even having a drink with the opposition after a game! Look how they went apeshit when Trott was seen speaking to his South African friends a while ago.
