O'Brien apology to Dickinson

Johannesburg - International Rugby Board (IRB) referee manager Paddy O’Brien has issued an apology to Stuart Dickinson and the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) for public comments he made regarding Dickinson’s officiating of the Italy v New Zealand match on November 14.

O’Brien’s comments followed a scheduled meeting with the New Zealand management at the team hotel in London on Tuesday and were made in discussion with media assembled at the same hotel for a team media session.

While such meetings with team management are regular practice, the IRB said in a statement that it was not IRB policy to publicly comment on refereeing appraisals or to discuss details of meetings held with team officials and all such feedback should be conducted via the appropriate channels.

"I have unreservedly apologised to Stuart Dickinson for the action of publicly discussing elements of his performance review and would like to extend that apology to the Australian Rugby Union," O'Brien said.

"A clear and confidential best practice protocol exists for match official appraisal and feedback involving all stakeholders and I regret breaching this protocol.

"The IRB has in place a dedicated high performance structure for the development of international referees and works hard with its member unions to identify up and coming talent and promote consistency at all levels of the game.

"Team management are also offered the opportunity to meet with the referee prior to a match or arrange a meeting with a performance reviewer or myself - this is normal practice.

"Again I would like to apologise to Stuart and the ARU for the public nature of the comments that I made."

Chad, I am Italian and, like the Irish, a staunch but sinful and guilt-ridden Catholic and easily take offence (like the Irish) to you slagging off the preaching of His Highness the Honourable Pope. My grandfather is also Welsh and an ex-milkman and choir boy and if he heard you carrying on about his singing he'd knock your block off. He has a hairy chest like Tom Jones too, whereas you are no doubt hairless and underendowed. What kind of name is Chad anyway, it's a tad sad Chad. You cad. Insignificant like the African country that shares your crud name.

Caleb, didn't you know that anyone with an Irish surname is, according to the Irish, "Irish"? It's a strategy that bolsters the "global" pretensions of that windswept, swampish little island. They even claim Barack Obama and Muhammad Ali as Irish, over and above their African roots and US passports! It just takes one genetic drop in the family tree to Irish-ise the entire specimen for life and ensuing generations, anywhere. Know doubt Paddy O'Brien counts himself "Irish" at the ol' IRB headquarters, a Kiwi strutting with a special Irish glow. Likewise, the Irish are happy to cash in on his Kiwi credentials by association, at the "global" IRB headquarters in Dublin of all places. It's inter-island Irish incest. His is a name that just doffs its Paddy cap to the Motherland, isn't it, it certainly isn't exactly true Kiwi, like Lomu or Umaga? Let's call this pot like the whistling kettle, eh paddyspanishman?

We Paddies don't like the Spanish, never have, nor the Polish for that matter. We don't like South African thugs either and are going to crush you in Dublin, BOD is going to run circles around you all and teach you a lesson about why he will be crowned Player of the Year. O'Brien will be smiling from ear to ear. Johno is right, by the way, we love a good whinge, it's in our DNA. What we love most is all the political infighting in Bokland, makes beating you so easy. 3-0 you boere worses! Ha Ha Ha up to 4 when you leave Dublin whingeing.

@ John Paul Jones... who have you got more of mate? Tom or the Pope? I am having a difficult time deciding.....you sing a load...like Tom and you preach a bit too... like the good ol' Pontiff past!! Whoeva named ya was spot on the money!!
James Dalton11/21/2009 3:34 PM
paddyspanishman, i'd rather be a pot like John Paul than as genetically suspect as you.
Bokman11/21/2009 3:11 PM
Hey Paddy Spaniard, I agree with John. Shut your trap you whinger, trying to get clever but just being a dumbass.
TRICOLOR11/21/2009 3:07 PM
This is unbelievable. I still agree what O'Brien did was the right thing and now the new apology the Dickenson leaves much begging in the credebility of the IRB. The IRB has no transperancy whatsoever. An attempt to look good they, the IRB resorts to protocols. It is becoming more clear now why thePerformance of refereeing is going down the drain. So take Dickenson out of the equation as to who is the best referee in the world and the best conclusion we can come to is ALL. in the sense all are at the same baseline level. In time to come we willbe filling very many postings on NEWS24

PaddySpanishman, here you are whingeing about me now, you Paddy whinger, proving my point. I'm not the only one fed up with the politics in SA rugby, Take your Spanish fly and find yourself an Irish cousin on your rural farm to keep yourself occupied, you gobs****.

DICKinson has been by far the worst ref over the last decade....fire that idiot!!
fatso11/21/2009 9:43 AM
no-one here mentioning that the guy (Paddy) is a New Zealander? Time for him to leave his post I think.
Shawn11/21/2009 8:26 AM
What a cop out, speak out and say what all of us are seeing and then appologise for speaking up, poor one Paddy. Check it out Dickie will get to reff the world cup final now to make up for this one, remember this comment come world cup final
Imboriako11/21/2009 7:28 AM
The cracks are starting to show.....the inconsistency shown every game by the refs depending on who is playing is a clear indication one of these days we are gonna see admission of match fixing like the soccer...In SA starting as far back as Andre watson its been happening...blatantly but because the team hat wins is happy of course and they got their money's worth and the team that was crooked by the ref under rugby union rules is not allowed to complain except in a confidential report afterwards and the rugby union keeps it under wraps so the game does not become like soccer. but they forget the supporters are not blind and watch most games so their performance is becomming more and more frustrating..thats why that arsehole got tackled Mc Hugh think his name was..because he was cheating nothing else. the first Sa team to be investigated has to be the bulls with the way they are openly allowed to get away with infringements and foul play...it's there...one day soon it will all come out. I say do what they did to Ace Ngcobo in soccer...lie detectors immediately and then we will have 90% of the refs suspended and go back and question watson cause I reckon that tosser started the trend.

Rugby players earn their living through the sport ... they are cited, banned, etc ... all in the public domain. Referees too have chosen officiating as their careers, yet their appraisals and performance reviews are kept secret. They band together protecting one another like some kind of "broederbond". We pay TV licence fees and exorbitant ticket prices to watch the players ... not one little clown who thinks 30 players are there to afford him a stage on which to perform his antics. What is good for the goose .....!
Schmalz11/21/2009 7:17 AM
W**** do not judge each other in public.......
Tony11/21/2009 6:43 AM
Rugby referees should be accountable to the rugby fans. Rugby players are publicly punished for wrong doing. The referees change the outcome of games by their crazy decisions. Fans spend their valuable time watching the sport they love. Bad refereeing should be publicly lambasted.
Dave11/21/2009 6:03 AM
I recall that as a ref, O'Brien was as bad as Dickinson. Why doesnt the panel keep us up to date with its membership and publish all its assessments, with reasons?
Bez11/21/2009 1:10 AM
O'Brien has always been out of his depth, especially when he was still a ref. Why should a ref's appraisal be confidential? Only because it allows the 'Old Boys' club to protect each other. There have been many instances of players being hammered although only as a consequence of a ref''s poor decision - players are not offered the same protection as refs. If the IRB are serious about improving the standard of refereeing, change the rules to have referees wearing a No. 31 on their backs, as the public go to watch the 30 players on the field, and not the refs who it seems now imagine that they are the most important on the field! Wrong, Paddy, wrong!!!

Why apologize to Stuart DICKinson Paddy?. You were only telling the truth and the rugby loving fans of this world think it's a step in the right direction to publicly announce under performance by a referee. By means of this and further analysis it will quickly become clear that CERTAIN referees (read plonkers DICKinson and Wayne Barnes) have PERSONAL issues with certain teams (read Springboks). If the IRB does NOT STOP appointing these two plonkers from officiating (read cheating) in tests the Springboks are playing, the IRB will expose themselves as cheaters by persisting with them!. The IRB needs to learn the word transparency and publish referees' assessments. This will stop the bitching from fans. This will also reveal punitive measures, prove that the IRB is serious about appointing the best referees and relegates underperforming plonkers back to 3rd and 4th league games IN THEIR OWN countries. Not too difficult is it?.

Can you spot the "Dick" on Paddy's head/face. He just neads a "Stuart" to make him the perfect "Prick"...... F......Off New Zealand and your OZ buddies. You are a bunch of Jokers... Hope the IRU spoils your gravy train ride......
paddyspanishman11/20/2009 11:03 PM
@ John Paul Jones aka The Pot....'A good whinge and pointing of the finger at "wrongdoing" is the Irish way. All i've read from you on this website has been you whinging about the 'politics' south african rugby, you need to stop calling the kettle black, ey pot?
ImpartialCanuck11/20/2009 10:57 PM
Sucking up to appease the "old boys network" and hold onto his role in the IRB!! About time more shocking reffing decisions were exposed for what they are and time for change from within, to create some impartiality in the modern professional game! Change is needed and no idea why it is even based in Ireland - would love to know the rationale behind that one!!??
John Paul Jones11/20/2009 9:30 PM
Never mind Paddy, we know you kissed the Blarney Stone as a lad, in your country full of blabbers. A good whinge and pointing of the finger at "wrongdoing" is the Irish way. You couldn't help yourself! And of course, you are clean as a whistle and beyond criticism. Why is the IRB based in Ireland anyway?
FOTA11/20/2009 9:29 PM
Interesting. He did not apologise for the actual criticism, just for telling the truth in public. Dickenson remains the worst referee on the test panel and it is about time that he is taken off. Pitiful, slow, 1/2 blind .... if he was a horse they would shoot him. Gee up Dicky, it's time for the glue factory
Theo11/20/2009 8:35 PM
Wattie and Paddy. Enough said lest this be branded a "loser talk" by Wattie, "loser talk" being an excuse to sweep the legacies of Erikson, Spweadburry, Joel Jutge, McHugh, Dickinson and now Wayne Barnes under the mat.
