Durban - Members of the Springbok squad that faced the British & Irish Lions in 1997 joined the current squad in Durban on Wednesday to extend their support ahead of the three Tests during the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series.

The first of three Tests takes place at the Absa Stadium Durban on 20 June. The Springbok squad to face the Lions arrived in the city on Tuesday to continue preparations for the series.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, who conceived the idea of getting the two squads together, said the session was well received by the players.

"The purpose was to get the 1997 Boks to share their experience and discuss where we can learn and make sure we improve our chances of success against the Lions," said De Villiers.

"They also highlighted what makes a Lions series different and what it meant to them as players to face the Lions. They also handed jerseys to our guys as a symbolic gesture of their support."

Carel du Plessis, who coached the Boks in 1997, said the 2009 squad had all the attributes to be successful against the British & Irish Lions.

"Peter has a fantastic group of players at his disposal with strength in every position," said Du Plessis.

"The outcome of the series in 1997 was disappointing and hopefully we were able to pass on advice that will be useful as they prepare for the upcoming series.

"It is shaping up to be an interesting contest and we are certain the Boks will give a good account of themselves."

Springbok captain John Smit said having the support of the 1997-squad was a great confidence booster.

"These were the last guys to have faced the Lions and it was great to get an insight into their experiences. They also gave us some pointers on what to expect and how we might do certain things that will aid our preparations and performance. It was fantastic that they were able to join us," said Smit.

Gary Teichmann, who led the Boks in 1997, added: "Hopefully this show of solidarity with the guys will motivate them further as they bid for a series victory over the Lions.

"This is a strong and confident squad that will be boosted by the success of the Vodacom Bulls in the Vodacom Super 14, which bodes well for the Lions series," Teichmann said.

On Wednesday evening both squads attended the match between the Sharks and Lions in Durban, which the Lions won 39-3.

Members of the 1997 Springbok squad who were able to attend, were Carel du Plessis (coach), Gary Teichmann (captain), Rassie Erasmus, Pieter Rossouw, Fritz van Heerden, Justin Swart, Dawie Theron, Edrich Lubbe, Werner Swanepoel, Russell Bennett, Adrian Garvey, Danie van Schalkwyk, James Dalton, Jannie de Beer, Japie Mulder, Hannes Strydom, Joost van der Westhuizen, Krynauw Otto, Boeta Wessels, Andr Snyman, Mark Andrews and Percy Montgomery, who is the current Springbok kicking coach.

PdeV is abusing a lifetime opportunity as a bok coach when entering into a scrap with the British Lions, if he's not prepared to pick the Cream of the SA talented Crop of players. He finds pride in being stupid and stubborn on purpose at times, we all know that, it's a pitty others (players/supporters) have to suffer defeat caused by his sometimes "dof" rugby brains. We will still back the boys of green and gold.Go Bokke

I assume Boeta Wessels was there for the Durban party and booze!!!! He was the Earl Rose of the 1997 squad. I assume coach Div and Rose are roommates!!! Ruan Pienaar and Earl Rose are like Tiger Woods in golf.... I assume coach "Snorre 'had one to many........

How can the 1997 Boks help the current side.?Absolute waste of time ,different era ,different players, different style of play and change in laws of the game.[what is PDV trying to prove?] NB stop picking on Rose he did not select himself and will be very lucky to even come on as a replacement.

Yes, the Lions certainly showed they have great talent and strength in certain positions and they'll give the 'Boks a good run for their money. Terblanche, once again, was great under the high ball, defensive tackling and and simply tremendous relieving kicks. Terblanche or Kirchner or both. It's never too late coach and selectors. Supporters will even accept Rose dressed up as a Springbok mascot...... that's really all he's good for!!

Guys, I was at the game last nigh and sat on the field (a first for me) and I can tell you this. The "Sharks" played a terrible game yesterday eve. The gave away position every time they got the ball, did not content for the line outs and the 2 "wings" did not get clean ball once. and the worst of ALL the Lions dominated the front pack (Completely broke the scrums and the won ball in the ruck's.) Compare that to the type or game the Bulls AND Lions plays.... I think we will get a VERY big surprise. in 9 Days. The Boks this time should do it and well.. Lets wait before we put them down. Lets see what 2009 Boks can do.... Any way GO THE BOKS!!!!

Ano 10:38....You aint seen nothing yet. Just watch the Biggest Looser of all time, Earl Twinkle Toes Rose Budd in action, and you you'll agree that we're heading for an even worse result. Earl's selection has alot to do with the mass exodus of real talented players. Why wouldn't we want to smash the Lions with our best players! Hate YOU EARL!

wow, there is a mix of legends, has-beens and never-should've- beens! Lions are looking very good after the sharks game.

i hope the "bok coach" saw that if the right springbok team is not on the field we are going to get a hiding - they crushed the Sharks, even it was a so called B team the pack of the Sharks were almost at full strength - me think we are in for a nasty surprise
