Pretoria – He is humble about being honoured, but even Fourie du Preez has to admit that he deserved to be named SA Rugby’s player of the year, and that he can surely now be considered the best scrumhalf in the world.

“It’s been an incredible year. I don’t think we’ll experience anything like this again and that is why the award is extra special,” Du Preez said on Monday night after collecting the award in Johannesburg.

The Bok scrumhalf also received the award in 2006 and then struggled with all the accolades. However, a Super14 title, the series win over the British and Irish Lions, winning the Tri-Nations and the Blue Bulls’ Currie Cup triumph leaves him with no choice other than to admit that he has made a major contribution to SA rugby in 2009.

The chances are also good that he will be named as the International Rugby Board’s player of the year, but it’s not something Du Preez is getting excited about prematurely.

“I heard it’s Brian O’Driscoll, so I won’t have too many sleepless nights about it,” he said.

“It will be nice if I get it, but rugby is a team sport first and foremost and there should not be too much fuss over one player.”

His focus is rather with the Springbok team and how they can beat France, Italy and Ireland later this month.

“It’s important for us to finish the year on a high, but it’s not going to be easy.”

Du Preez is delighted by the inclusion in the Bok squad of his two understudies at the Blue Bulls – Heini Adams and Francois Hougaard.

“They deserve it. I think Francois is the guy who will take over from Heini and myself when we finish playing in a year or two,” said the 27-year-old Du Preez.

He added that he is considering playing overseas after the World Cup in 2011.

“I’m still looking around, but it’s definitely an option,” he said.

“It will not just be about rugby, but will also be a lifestyle choice when I go overseas.”

Adams and Hougaard will be under pressure when they run out at Welford Road on Friday.

The Leicester pack will still be strong, in spite of Lewis Moody, Tom Croft and Jordan Crane not being available due to England duty.

Props Marcos Ayerza and Martin Castrogiovanni will be available as they only have to join up with the Argentine and Italian squads respectively next week. Ben Kay and George Chuter are also likely to play.

The chances are slim that Wallaby wing Lote Tuqiri will play against the Boks. He is only likely to be considered from next week.

BOD won the grandslam with Ireland and the Heiniken Cup with Leinster, putting in awe inspiring performances in the process as well as a good lions tour. I think the award should go to FDP too but to say that BOD hasn't achieved anything this year and that for him to win the award would amount to conspiracy is paranoid s.hemisphere propaganda.

Cmon give BOD a bit of respect surely he showed the South Africans in the Lions tests that he at least deserves to be considered. Bring on the Boks to Croker, always cocky always confident and always condescending.

What a legend! Good role model. You deserve it. All the best for IRB awards.

I am a huge Sharks supporter, but I acknowledge talent when I see it. And Fourie Du Preez has LEGEND written all over every single one of his performances! By far the best scrumhalf in the world, and possibly the best player in the world. @Shark Bone- Du Preez is humble. He has proven he is humble. He has not let fame get to his head. If he did then he would have peaked at the World Cup and would be in decline by now.

Hope the powers that be at the IRB have the ability to recognise REAL TALENT ! Well done Fourie Du Preez for showing the world how to be talented, skilled and remain a humble professional as well !! Sportsmen of your calibre only come around once in a lifetime - heres wishing you many more years in the game !!

I am the furthest from a bull supporter that one can ever be BUT in his springbok colours and even in his bulls colours Fourie is the model player, he performs on the field, never gets into conflict even when tormented, never torments opposition, is as humble as Habana, never gloats about his success, has the best rugby brain seen for years and when interviewed he comes across as genuine...a great all rounder...and a great chap. thats why he is the best. well deserved without doubt. had anyone else received the aware it would have been a farce and insult to Fourie

Jy verdien dit!!!!
Steve11/4/2009 8:24 AM
Fourie is the best player in the world. Period. His rugby brain is unbelievable and he never rests on his laurels. People who still compare him to Joost are clueless. He was one-dimensional whereas Fourie skills and variety are unrivalled. Lets hope he stays injury-free until 2011.
SHARKFAN11/4/2009 8:04 AM
Well done Fourie, you are a true gentleman of the game and we are proud to have you in the bok team
Bal11/4/2009 8:04 AM
BOD??? What has he achieved this year? Wow! A Six Nations win..... Could this be because the IRB headquaters is in Dublin? I don't like conspiracy theories, but..... Just shows you how the game is dominated by the "bleekbene" up north. Surely there was no better player than FdP this year. It resonates from the Antipodies too.... Good one Bulls! Go Boks! Humiliate the Irish!
