Cape Town - The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has been given two weeks to say when the Southern Kings will start playing Super Rugby.

Butana Komphela, chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on sport, insisted on Tuesday that SARU should commit itself to a date as there has been an undertaking for three years to get the Kings – a combination of Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts – competing.

SARU president Oregan Hoskins said after appearing in front of the committee that rugby’s governing body could not commit itself to a date.

Hoskins and four other members of SARU’s top brass have to inform Komphela of the date in a closed meeting in two weeks’ time.

ANC MPs, in particular, insisted on Tuesday that the Kings have to get off the ground as it will help transform the Springbok side. Most black rugby players play for clubs in the Eastern Cape.

Hoskins told committee members that SARU are committed to establishing the Kings, “but it may not happen as quickly as some people would like”.

SARU had to fork out R12 million to pay the debt of the three provincial teams and also had to assist with their management. There is also not a co-operation agreement between the three unions, said Hoskins.

SANZAR will decide this week whether the 15th franchise should be given to the Southern and Eastern Cape or to Melbourne to become part of an enlarged Super Rugby tournament in two years’ time.

Trompie - get real! No other SA team, especially the King have what it takes to become the Super 14/15 champs. You and the ANC are living in (your own) dream world. Just look how Bafana Bafana has slipped down the rankings since 1996. Perhaps they need more white players to transform their game and performances

@trompie, and where is your boksem bende? wake up and small the coffee, the Lions will end in the top 7 next year. Apparantly most of you anti Lions @ssholes don't follow rugby as many changes are taking place at the Lions.

Give the Kings a chance to play, because the likes of the Cheetas and Lions are doing absolutely nothing to win the tournament.Always at the bottom(12,13 OR14) half of the log.We do not expect the Kings to win the Super 14, but give them a chance to build a competitive team and i am sure they will surprise a few of us.

Again the ANC and dompie show their disregard for sport and its supporters by demanding bla bla bla, I suggest they try to play Vodacom cup and Currie cup (if they can), But then we know ANC people want rewards without the preceding work, a demanding and underpreforming lot they are!

They dont even play Currie-cup... ...They will make a spectacle of themselves in the Super 14.. ...He he he ..!!! ..Cheeky Watson and his clowns...

Mr Komphela, why are there no plan in place to transform Bafana Bafana into a more representative side? Seems like transformation is only moving one way...

Since when does the head of SARU have to report to Dompela? Does the rugby supporter now have to contribute through expensive tickets, such as the Lions tour rip-off, to clubs who underperform and is rife with corruption? This is typical ANCriminal strategy. They demand and we have to pay for their incompetence. Plus they make a big fuss about transformation. Rugby supporters must vote with their feet or rather absence of feet.

Why do they need to transform the Springbok side??? we are winning and have a well balanced side at present. Oh yes... I forgot that is the ANC's motto "Lets fix what isn't broken, and then stuff it up anyway, then we point fingers, have an investigation then another investigation and then we get paid our bonus"
