Dublin - Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has missed out on the IRB Coach of the Year award to Ireland Declan Kidney.

The award was announced following the Test between Six Nations champions Ireland and Tri-Nations champions South Africa at Croke Park in Dublin, on Saturday.

Ireland won 15-10.

Kidney has enjoyed an exceptional first full year as head coach of Ireland, masterminding his side to a deserved Six Nations Grand Slam - the first by an Irish team in 61 years.

During an outstanding year, Ireland were also unbeaten in November, recording victories over South Africa and Fiji after drawing with Australia.

His record this year is played ten, won nine and drawn one and he is the first Irishman to win the coveted IRB Coach of the Year Award since the IRB Awards began in 2001.

"I don't know what to say really, the team have been superb over the last 12 months.

"I feel my role is overstated, I haven't made a tackle all year! But for my family putting up with me and the players putting up with me even more I'd like to accept it on their behalf," said Kidney.

Previous winners of IRB Coach of the Year:
2001 - Rod Macqueen (Australia)
2002 - Bernard Laporte (France)
2003 - Clive Woodward (England)
2004 - Jake White (South Africa)
2005 - Graham Henry (New Zealand)
2006 - Graham Henry (New Zealand)
2007 - Jake White (South Africa)
2008 - Graham Henry (New Zealand)

jake white is not as great as everyone tinks he is.He has not beaten nz in nz and lets not forget 49-0 against the aussies. The only reason the boks won the world is due to the assistance of eddie jones! witout him jake white would have been sacked before the world cup let alone win the world cup!
GO PdV!11/30/2009 9:32 AM
Why don't all of you racist ignorant white SA citizens not pack your bags and go live in a country where they will only employ a white coach and only pick white players! Get over yourselves please or just leave cause you just bring our country down. Uncle Peter you have done a sterling job do not bother yourselve with insignificant comments like most of these. You have won all the coveted trophies this year, more than any other (white) coach could ever say they have done. Yes you probably have one of the best Springbok teams ever , but good players alone does not guarantee you wins. I would like to see all these hipocrites coach the national team and do a better job. Yes everybody make some bad decisions now and then, but overall Peter has proven himself. Pdv you have done us proud (And there are many "white" SA citizens who got over themselves and are able to look past your skin colour - I have many of them as friends and colleaugues, but unfortunately there are still so many who still believe this country only belongs to them). Keep your head up high and continue with the magnificent work!

I cannot believe all these comments! This is exactly why I as a South African support the All Blacks, because so many white (not all - I have a few very good genuine white friends and colleagues, unfortunately there are not enough of them) SA citizens will never convert. These ignorant racist fools will never be able to see past the colour of players and coaches' skin! PdV has won more trophees in one year than any other (white) coach has ever been able to accomplish, but yet you would not give the man his due, c'mon wake up smell the coffee! Yes he probably has one of the best Springbok teams ever, but it does not just take good players to win trophies (coveted trophies!). Get over yourselves you ignorant racists or get out of the country and go find a country where you will find a white coach who will only pick white players, cause that is the only way it seems you will be happy! Uncle Peter I don't support your team I do believe you have done a magnificent job this year keep it up and just ignore these racists!

I think DiV must have been very close, and deservedly so, but I think as coaches go, Kidney has done a sterling job with the Irish.

Six Nations win vs series wins over the British & Irish Lions, beating the AB's in all matches this year, home and away and a Tri Nations title to boot? Please! Puff is the best coach out!

@ Robin - so what you are saying that PdV is so Brilliant that he picks up to four payers (Smit, Pienaar, Jacobs. du Preez) and thinks he knows more than than all the coaches who have worked with these players over the years? Are you also saying that he was the coach that discovered Brussouw and M Steyn? Also the coach that decided not to use Jaque Fourie? If you say yes you are just as naive as PdV. The last three examples were only "forced" on the Springboks through injury. I have throughout the year said PdV is clueless and the victories came because of the btilliant players he had at his disposal. The difference between Kidney and PdV is that Kidney took a poor (at best average team) and is busy making them into a good to great team. PdV had a great team and he is taking them to be an average team. That is reality mate - face it
MJV11/29/2009 10:44 AM
If the SA coach was going to be given the award, it would have to go to John Smit. PDV is only there on token value. Smit and the rest of the senoir team members are doing the coaching.

I can understand why Div was not nominated. Although he may be a great peoples person, he is tactically and strategically still very naive and is prone to bad team decisions eg; Lions first test - unnecessary wholesale changes; third test - bad team selection; playing players out of position; persevering with favourites when clearly there are others that are better etc, etc! Nevertheless, he still deserves the country's support - hopefully he is still in a learning curve!

What did he expect????? He is a nice person I am sure but that is not good enough.

the rugby played by the French and All blacks last night is a clear denonstation of how rugby is to be played. the Boks tactics to skot and storm is a laugh a minute. There are also too many coaches, it looks as though Mr De Villiers is more set at managing a coaching team than coaching himself. He has now run out of excuses, he is relying on a Jake White team that won the World cup by default and generous draws. The writing was and is on the wall for sometime, rugby is a national sport belonging to the people and if they loose interest it is goodbye. Mr De Villiers look at the All blacks and French last night and you will learn and understand how the game of rugby is played, first of all to pick the best players in their positions and not to destroy the careers of young black and coloured players who are not yet ready to compete at that level. Jy is besig om droog te maak.

Is it only me, but really look at Div objectively: 1) All the players that shone where forced on him i.e. Brussou, M Steyn 2) he persists with players who are not good enough i.e. Adi, Ruan, Earl 3) Made some questionable subs i.e. B and L tour 4) Keeps trying to play this expansive game which does not fit the team, we are a power team look at the tri-nations, not pretty but effective. 5) He perssists with Smith at tight head even after it was proved that he was suffering at this postion. 6) He says no foreign based players, but look now ?? consistancy Mr Div? and yes I have never coached an U9 Rugby team, but I am also no dumb all I need to do is look!! He is not a good coach no matter what Smith or his supporters say, the above list is factual no emotive.

2009,a truly great year for the Springboks-players, coach and supporters. Clearly the pressure and fatigue of playing too many games came through and the traditional year end tour to Europe saw the Boks suffer from exhaustion, staleness etc. The coach has earned all our respect and I am sure his focus was never a title for himself but the Coach of the Year will not elude him for too long. Thank You Springboks for a magnificent 2009 and we wish you all a blessed Christmas and quality time with your families over the festive season. Peace Bra G.
Bokke!!11/29/2009 5:33 AM
I am sure that the message got lost in translation with the above posts, surely it should read. "Thanks for the awesome year PdV, cant wait for 2010!!" or "Most impressive Bok year in memory, bring on 2011!" No, still with the negative hey? Losing to Ireland and France sucks, but not as much as being kicked out of the World Cup in the group stages. As good as we have been, we are not perfect, and if you cannot see that we need to have a rebuilding stage before 2011, then you aren't the clever arm-chair critic you make yourself out to be!!
Keep it up PdV11/29/2009 5:29 AM
Jeez Guys, a couple wins and you okes are looking for blood. Did you not cheer when the boks won the Tri Nations and Lions tours? Where you still chirping about PdV then? Let me guess, the "senior" players held the team together?? Get over yourselves... PdV has done what Jake White couldnt, win in New Zealand. Twice. In two years. Back to back.
R11/29/2009 3:27 AM
I still have 0 faith in PDV. He inherited a world cup winning squad which he put together over many years. Remember he coached them under 21 too. He was the glue that held the squad together and they gelled so well together. Any darn coach, no matter how bad he was could have taken over this team and won matches, even the tri nations. It was only a matter of time before the whole thing fell apart. If we keep PDV, watch me, we going to lose alot more games. He just doesnt have what it takes to coach the national side, provincial maybe, but not the boks...JAKE WHITE FTW ! and before anyone claims this to be a racist comment, I'm coloured myself ! I believe results speak, not race...and he HAS NOT proven himself.
colin11/29/2009 12:49 AM
Think that Div lost out by to days defeat ??? Were badly mauled and never showed that they were the World Champs on this tour by bad selections and never looked like world champs to day at all
Down with PdV11/29/2009 12:44 AM
Terrible substitutions, terrible selections, terrible tactics. The IRB is right, it's the players who are team of the year, but it's little thanks to the coach who has shot the team in the foot time and time again. This is a real slap in the face for PdV and a wake-up call.
Robin Rapheal11/28/2009 9:51 PM
How many sides have you clowns coached......Let alone to win a Tri-nations. You all got alot to say about PdV, but he has done well!! You guys who critisise have proberbly never even coached a under 9 side let alone a provincial or National one. Keep it up Peter De Villiers you were beaten by a better World Class Coach, from Ireland better luck next time! As a rugby coachmyself, I too applaud you, I understand how hard this thing you do is!!
vj11/28/2009 9:30 PM
PdV will never fill Jake white's boots as a coach.
Blue Jake11/28/2009 9:18 PM
Div not coach of the year! What a shocker!
Marius11/28/2009 9:14 PM
Ha-ha..
Jan11/28/2009 9:06 PM
I am surprised De Villiers' name even came up for consideration. The IRB is not a BEE compliant organisation. To receive the award, you actually need to know what you're doing. Div only has entertainment value.
