Steyn takes top Sport24 award

Morne Steyn (Gallo Images)

Morne Steyn has been voted by the Sport24 readers as the man who delivered the performance of 2009!

Yes, the votes are in – all 8 326 of them - and we here at Sport24 are chuffed to be able to announce the Performance, Plonker and Picture of 2009 …

The Sport24 awards are unique in two ways: They are about a single performance rather than an aggregated effort over 12 months, and the winners are decided by the Sport24 readers. So if a sportsman or woman is nominated for 3 different performances in 3 different months, as our winner was, then in effect they compete with themselves for the “Performance of the Year”. Their votes do not get added together – the awards are based on individual performances in a given month.

So while Morne Steyn was nominated three times (as decided by reader votes on a monthly basis), it was the Bulls idol’s 53m penalty on the hooter that settled not only the match but the series against the British and Irish Lions too that got him the “Performance of the Year”.

The original cool customer, it seems, he was brought belatedly off the bench in the brutal, dramatic second Test against the Lions at Loftus, and did the business. What more could a Bok fan wish for?

How the voting went can be seen below, but Steyn saw off another magnificent performance from Graeme Smith. His decision to go out to bat at No 11, while nursing two painful injuries, to try to save the dead-rubber Test for his country at the Sydney Cricket Ground is the stuff of folklore. The skipper’s never stood accused of lacking old-fashioned guts …

Plonker of the Year

And in the much more tongue in cheek category given that sport cannot always be a serious business, we note with much humour, that Ras Dumisani has been voted the “Plonker of the Year” by the Sport24 readers …

Probably the most infamous and incompetent rendition of the national anthem ever, as Ras Dumisani the reggae “artist”, fluffed his lines to the bemusement or downright anger of the Springbok rugby team before their Test defeat to France late last year. Some wags said that at least he united the nation … in common uproar!

Dumisani  saw off a brave effort for “Plonkerhood” from Leonard Chuene. All sorts of villains were cited – the media, racists, inconsiderate scientists, aliens from Jupiter – over the tawdry Caster Semenya gender furore. Athletics South Africa boss Chuene quickly bandied about the “racist” card himself … but then we suddenly learned that he lied about not knowing about gender tests conducted on Semenya, and also ignored advice to withdraw her from the World Athletics Championships before the proverbial poo hit the fan.

Picture of the Year

At least we know who is on the list for plonker for this year
urling3/15/2010 5:52 PM
Why is Dick Muir insisting on playing Earl Rose, who makes one mistake after the other in a game ? Surely we have better Fullacks, what has happened to Ludik & if not available, there must be someone else who's overall play is better than Earl Rose, he is the problem amoungst the Backline players. Also what has happened to Wickus Van Heerden ? Tired of backing a constantly loosing Team ! Yours truly Urling

SA has been looking for a world class fly half since the retirement of Naas Botha. I believe that in Morne Steyn, that fly half has eventually been found. Considering his young age, it will not suprise me if he does not go on to become our best fly half ever. Move over Daniel Carter!

Digitally enhanced photo? Does it make a difference? Is it less beautiful because you know that? Was it more beautiful before you knew that? Look at it on merit, as what you see. A photo is never real life anyway - it is all representation....

Did anybody think that if Morne wasnt in the Bulls they wouldnt win!!! So yes he deserves the vote. We sharks supporters are under no illusion that our team sucks for 11 years then wins every 12th year. Sharks should by Morne :)

Mense soos julle frustreer rugbykenners. Word groot.
ROTHY2/15/2010 12:51 PM
Assegaai, jy ken duidelik nie rugby nie. How can you make such a statement that Morne would be nothing without Fourie? That is why in rugby terms they are called the "half back pair". They must operate as a pair. I can also say without the forwards Fourie is nothing. Now let me put the record straight. Morne is a genius and so is Fourie.By the way they are the Springbok half back pair.

I'll admit that Morne's end-of-year form wasnt great but critics of Morne are missing the bigger picture of us winning the Tri-Nations,British and Irish Lions tour aswell as his own franchise winning two cups of their own thanks to hard work done upfront and the flyhalf converting the points opportunities given.

It's no use crying over spilt milk people. Every month we put five candidates out for you to vote for. The monthly winners are decided only by your vote, and they then become the 12 contenders for the annual award - which is again decided by Sport24 reader vote. So this is not a Sport24 decision, this is a Sport24 reader decision - which makes these Awards uniqie, and I love that. But this year, instead of moaning about who is and is not on the list, get out there and VOTE!
Julius Malema1/25/2010 4:17 PM
Why is Mickey Arthur not on the list, he should be "Plonker of The Year" in my opinion and surely many SA cricket fans. He has been utterly useless and is probably the worst coach SA ever had, well barring Santana.
@KArl1/25/2010 3:47 PM
I agree. Anyone can do wonders with photoshop on any photo. A photographic award should be for untouched photo's.
Gibbaan Erasmus1/25/2010 3:29 PM
Julius Malema should be 'Plonker of the Year'.
assegaai1/25/2010 3:15 PM
OK. I'll give him credit..and yes my "windgat" comment was a little subjective. He did win alotta games for us, but also for the Bulls... so I stand corrected. Ps. You asked... "I am a Stormer!" Just remember... no excuses this year Bulls...OK?!
KArl1/25/2010 2:45 PM
The photo was digitally enhanced - is it really worthy of the award then?
Norman du Plooy1/25/2010 12:42 PM
@Sharkbone. I think it was their loosing streak in the S14 (started with the game the lost against the Cheetahs) after a very good beginning in the competition. Just a reminder, the Cheetahs is the team where you guys always buy your quality players. They also managed to keep you guys out of the Curriecup Final.
@assegaai21/25/2010 12:03 PM
Rugby is a team effort, so naturally if your team mates play well that helps you play well. Well done too to Fourie for his part in making Morne perform well. Don't know if I'd call Morne windgat - definitely confident. Morne had a great year, so I back this all the way!
zinzan1/25/2010 12:01 PM
Assegaai, jy kom seker van WP
FrustratedWP1/25/2010 11:58 AM
Sireli Naqelevuki would have got my vote for plonker.
@assegaai1/25/2010 11:56 AM
Let me guess...Sharks supporter, right?
Nikki1/25/2010 11:42 AM
...well done Morne jou doring! Greame was close en in my opinie was on par met Morne. @ Assegaai...yes Fourie makes him look good...but for Pete's sake man give credit were credit is due...Morne had a fantastic year & kicked like a machine...the man scored points left, right & centre...does anything else really matter? & NO...he is so NOT windgat...he is probably next to Fourie the most humble guy out there! WTF dude(Assegaai)?
Morne1/25/2010 11:35 AM
So the vote goes for a guy that simply did his job, or what was expected from him as a place kicker... More rewarding players would be Victor Matfield imo, together with Bismarck, Fourie for rugby. Smith, Duminy for cricket
me1/25/2010 11:35 AM
@ assegaai - stem 100% saam en lets face it sy vorm het gesuck in die year end tour.
Mike1/25/2010 11:26 AM
Ruaan Pienaar is my 'Plonker of the Year' - capped off nicely against Leicester in UK. In his defence, he should never have been moved from scrumhalf.
Graps1/25/2010 11:24 AM
@Assegaai - Well done to Morne. He does the kicking all by himself and this was about one kick! You are missing the point completely. Must be a sour grapes Sharks fan
Shark Bone1/25/2010 11:16 AM
How did The Sharks become plonkers in May? I mean really now,this is too much hatred for The Sharks,it wouldn't surprise me if this has something to do with the BBs fans.
Manny1/25/2010 11:14 AM
Assegaai net deur jou 'comment' kan ek aflui j is n stormer LOL wel dit is maar so ne as jy die beste is nie net in SA nie maar in die wêreld sal daar sum haters wees ek vrek n bloubul nou daai is ayoba!!!!
MB1/25/2010 11:12 AM
Morne was "no where" against Ireland with his penalty kicks dropping way short. We lost because he played like he had a hangover as did the rest of the team i must add!!
@Assegaai1/25/2010 10:46 AM
I agree, that Fourie du Preez will make any flyhalf look worldclass, but Fourie isnt there when Steyn puts a 53m penalty through the posts under immense pressure in his first international cap. Well done Morne - it was a brilliant kick!
assegaai1/25/2010 10:23 AM
Morne Steyn would be nothing without Fourie du Preez... Ps. Ek dink Morne heeltemal te windgat!
