Paris - The International Cycling Union Wednesday granted Team Barloworld a "wild card" status for 2009, meaning they will be able to enter or be invited to most of the major UCI cycling events.
The wild card given to Team Barloworld for the 2009 season attests the quality and the ethics of the team directed by Claudio Corti and sponsored by South Africa's Barloworld Limited.
Wild card labels are given only to teams that fulfil strict quality criteria on a number of levels: sporting (history of strong performances by team and riders), legal (observance of the rules), administrative (rigorous management and transparency) and ethical (especially anti-doping management and procedure), the UCI press release said.
Wild cards also obliges professional teams to participate in the biological passport programme, and Team Barloworld can now be invited in Pro Tour races, where the riders could have the chance to show their strength and class.
