Johannesburg - Runner Caster Semenya was subjected to humiliating tests in South Africa even before a gender row erupted over her world championship victory last month, a South African newspaper reported.

South African athletics officials have accused the IAAF, athletics' world governing body, of creating controversy by ordering gender tests on Semenya, who won the women's 800 metres at the world championships in Berlin.

"The tests took almost two hours and Semenya became frustrated and even angry over the humiliating nature of the tests," Afrikaans daily Beeld quoted Athletics South Africa's (ASA) former head coach Wilfred Daniels as saying of the tests carried out in South Africa.

Beeld said Semenya was "bitterly upset" when photographs of her private parts were taken during the examinations.

"Her feet were in stirrups when the photographs were taken," Daniels said.

ASA officials were not immediately available for comment on the report.

No decision is expected until late November but the IAAF has declined to confirm a report last week in Australia's Daily Telegraph newspaper which said she had both male and female sexual characteristics.

Semenya was led to believe she would undergo drug tests in South Africa, Beeld said.

Semenya called and sent text messages to friends from the hospital to tell them about her ordeal, the newspaper said.

Some South Africans have accused the IAAF of racism for ordering the gender tests on Semenya, saying her broad shoulders and imposing musculature were common in women's athletics.

Retired American track and field star Carl Lewis blamed ASA officials for Semenya's predicament, saying they had failed to protect her and deal with the issue.

"To put it out in front of the world like that, I am very disappointed in them because I feel that it is unfair to her," he said during a visit to Tel Aviv this week. "Now, for the rest of her life she'll be marked as 'the one'."

Semenya has said she is focusing on training, a local radio station reported on Wednesday.

"She wants to avoid public scrutiny and instead focus on her training," said Talk Radio 702.

"She refused to be recorded, saying her deep voice has been used by the media to fuel the gender controversy."

South African President Jacob Zuma has decried the invasion of Semenya's privacy and what he called the violation of her rights.

Daniels resigned last month over the way the Semenya matter has been handled by ASA.

"Do you think anybody can recover from the emotional hurt and humiliation she has undergone? What do you think will go through her head when she walks out on an athletics track after all her intimate details have been sent out to the world?"

The performance of black people has always been questioned especially in Europe by people that have never set foot in Africa. You hear of stories of how interest is raised when high performing african students excell at schools in Britain. In our case one student was paraded and students from different parts of Britain allowed to come and the the student with the best exam results. Caster is no exception, to the extent of examining her private parts, even the doctors who did that in South Africa must be ashamed of themselves. i never enjoyed the gyno visits when I was pregnat but just had to do it for health reasons. Why did Caster have to go through this! That is disgusting and humiliating for the poor girl. We love you Caster. keep up your spirits don't let them break your spirit! You will be in our prayers! we love you.

photo's as a 'sex' test?? just shows the level of expertise ASA appoints... fortunately the ASA doctor (the now missing in action dr harold adams)cannot be blamed for being racist...just completely incompetent...

Gabrerre, You will find 99% of comments from white south african are in support of this girl and cheered her on from the second the race started. The problem is how the issue was handled by ASA. It appears they had done tests and the results (dusgustingly performed) were leaked to the international media which is what made them question her in the first place. As for race.... African athletes have dominated athletics for decades and rightly so, they have not been questioned in the past until this clearly masculine looking woman competes and there were mentions of failed gender testing. It is the IAAF's duty to investigate these happenings for the benefit of all athletes, both black and white. She beat black athletes as well. It is well documented that white female athletes have been tested since the 1950's for this exact same reason. Was that racism as well Gabrerre? Why complain when they are testing to mke it fair in a sport where the majority of participants and winners are black? Racism.. please. As a black man you make me embarrassed. This could be why some of my friends are working overseas. As for Mugabe, you do know that he also supresses fellow Africans who oppose him, that could be you or your family. If his Zanu PF came to SA in opposition to ANC, you too would be beaten, persecuted and humiliated like we were under Aparatheid. He does not care for his people, he cares for himself only. If he loves his country why do his own family not live in Zimbabwe. Please educate yourself before you speak. Caster is the victim here, not Europeans. Officals, whatever race, who were responsible for this atrocity must be bought to book!

Cheune you are an embarrasment to all South Africans. The way you spoke in front of the poor girl - you and Malema chuckling away. Disgusting!! You even tried to get Oprah to part with money to parade her on USA TV. Even after Oprah has given so much to SA. You knew she wasn't 100% woman when you sent her. The doc even told you so. DISGRACEFUL!!

I am getting agitated by comments made by our fellow white coleagues, who want us to believe that racism is a thing of the past.whereas the reality of the matter is that everytime a black person does something good the end results are questioned.Why?.I understand that the Caster Semenya issue is but one. However there are plenty issues which are racialy driven out there.
SAFfa9/16/2009 9:49 PM
I think what we need to asks ourselves is...How would we react if this was someone we loved? Integrity, humanity and just general goodness is tough, these day. The World media, IAAF and just general people who have taken this as a joke...we all have feels and emotins.Relate
jorene9/16/2009 8:31 PM
Disgusting ASA, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Caster is not an animal but a human being. How can you take photo's of her private parts, isn't a exam by a female gynie sufficent. I hope she sues the pants off all those that put her through the humilation she had to go through. Caster please sue them all as they should not get away with this.
Thinus9/16/2009 8:19 PM
This case should have been out of the media 2 weeks ago
Disgusted9/16/2009 8:16 PM
What does it matter, black or white,Caster has been publically humiliated. Surely issues of this nature are private or at least b more discreet.I really feel so bad for her.It is not something anyone can foresee. Please people leave her alone now she has endured enough.Just like the Jackson saga you people go on & on & on.Enough already
Lulu9/16/2009 7:06 PM
@Gaberre. You are soooo disgustingly stupid and incompetent, just like some members of ASA. and racist too!! Get you facts right!
Luke9/16/2009 6:53 PM
It is heartening to see so many so-called white racists showing sympathy and empathy. This whole issue is a disgrace. Where are you now Lennie?
Jaison Midzi9/16/2009 6:43 PM
There is asctually no racism in this issue as the same thing would have happened if Semenya was white. Its just a case of trying to nip dishonest bahaviour out of the budding flower of it.
Tshiginga9/16/2009 6:42 PM
Imagine this was you and the whole wide world knew about your genitalia/ ovaries or lack thereof. Surely, ASA and IAAF have messed. ASA deny that she was subjected to gender tests but there are allegations to the contrary. While IAAF has a right to test athletes, the results have to be safely guarded. It seems that there was a leak from IAAF and if IAAF wants to be taken seriously then they must deal with people who leaked the information. It is reported that her testosterone level is 3 times that of females. Does that mean she should race with men? I see men complaining after she has shown them a clean pair of heels.
Urs9/16/2009 6:36 PM
What is an "unfair advantage" anyway - when it is NATURALLY OCCURING - even if unusual and rare? Surely Usain Bolt has an "unfair advantage" over the other men in the race with him? Does he get subjected to humiliating tests and told his NATURALLY OCCURING "unfair advantage" bars him from competing? How many amazonian women field athletes have slipped through the net and not been tested? This was poorly dealt with by all involved and the issue of what constitutes an unfair advantage needs to be revisited. Caster should be compensated for what she has been put through and if that takes legal action then she should be assisted with this also.
Alan Ingram SA9/16/2009 6:11 PM
To mbaza@ Well said, i agree with you. I said right from the start of this controversy, if Chuene is shouting his mouth off and point the raciest card at every one means he has something hide ?
gillian9/16/2009 5:50 PM
Why is everything Racist??? there were 5 women tested for the same thing and THREE of them were WHITE. Get a life. I feel incredibly sorry for Caster and I think that she is going to need alot of councilling and I really hope that someday she will be able to forgive but she will never forget. Go Caster we are proud of you
Misha9/16/2009 4:08 PM
@GABERRA - you are a disgrace to all South Africans - white or black - perhaps you should go live in Zim since you are such an ignorant racist yourself.
Will Scott9/16/2009 2:55 PM
I feel so sorry for this poor girl. She's an 18 year old schoolgirl for heaven's sake! When someone made inuendous remarks about Amelie Mauresmo years ago there was hell to pay. Why wasn't Caster Semenya given the same dignity? I am disgusted with the ASA's handling of this! I believe that whoever wrote about this in the media is totally soulless! Do these people even care what her situation will be, going forward? And to the politicians who used this to score political points I say: "I hope it was worth it! How you --- Julius Malema, Winnie Mandela --- sleep at night, is beyond me! Shame on you!" I'm a white South African. I wasn't at the airport, Caster, but I'm thrilled at what you accomplished in Berlin. I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. You are my sister, and I love you.

I truly feel sorry for her, but thus said she is an educated woman and surely she should have known something different regarding herself in all these years. Maybe she could have mentioned it to someone. On the other hand I cannot believe that any athletic coach did not suspect something strange about her, she has Terminators build, the voice of Kenny Rodgers and yet they portrayed her as a little fairy. Did neither of the parties involved thought of the consequences of their blindness. I'm sorry guys, you had it coming

I am so disgusted at how Caster is being treated and it is disgusting how not one of those high flying officials or someone in ASA or IAAF have done nothing to put a stop to it, instead they continue to fuel papers and the media with rubbish news. How would they feel if this was their child! Just leave her alone already. And can someone who has it in good authority to do something about this please DO SOMETHING!

Its really disgusting to hear whites saying they blame her parents.Well they might have known but you tell me pre 1994 they didnt have access to resources ie media, information the list goes on I mean who would have listened to them then??? Leave the poor folks alone, they might have not been aware for cying out loud. And for YOU magazine you really humiliated my black sister, making her a laughing stock in your white community, its really sickening and disturbing. Oh you thought you will gain BBBEE status???
Reinardt Bronkhorst9/16/2009 2:05 PM
STOP profiting over her embarrassment. Stop publishing these things. It is sick. The media is disgusting! Why does nobody understand that the only reason she has been publicly humiliated is because the media exists and publishes this nonsense! You are simply serving as the means for everyone to tear her apart! Take responsibility for once please and act human even if you are not.
R9/16/2009 2:04 PM
I still don't get the IAAF's issue - she is not artificially augmented. She is a natural product and has been given a gift. Now we judge what is normal and not- why don't we ban the fastest female, or best female shot-putter, because they must also have a genetic gift. This is stupid, and Caster is being seen in the same light as athletes on steroids....race issues aside...this is rediculous. she should compete and kick ass.
Carl C9/16/2009 1:53 PM
@ Gaberre - If you hate white people so much, please stop using technology developed by white people. By the way I am white and I think the way Caster has been treated has been horrible. But I must be lying, because I am white. Oh and old Bob has really done his country the world of good.
sean9/16/2009 1:51 PM
ASA IS BLOODY PATHETIC !!! They blew the whole story even more up by using the pathetic race card !!! Like I said many times before , ANC (asa) government loves making sport political !!! They don`t give a s...t about any individuals !!! I blame them for the whole Cater saga !! Well done , you ruined a top athlete !!! Bloody bunch of banana consuming fools !!! How can a country go forward with incompitent fools in charge !! Suppose it`s just another day in africa , one step forward and five backwards !!

Gaberre, "Australia filled with EX South African Racists are to be blamed, and so are white minority south africans who keep blaming this poor girl" How is this a issue of race? When clearly the questions are about her GENDER. Hypocrite! People like you, that always pull the RACE card, are the real racists of this country. I hope that Semenya sues the S*T out of the ASA, IAAF and the b@*tard Australian newspaper. No one (except her and her peasants) was suppose to find out.

Man, what a sad episode in South Africa's history, and such a tragedy for one of our youth. Played out on the international stage for the world to see the depth and "quality" of our leaders. No more "beacon" to the world... I wish those "leaders" that took part in and took advantage of this debacle could actually grasp the damage they have done to South Africa; Race Relations; International relations and Equality - and especially damage done to Caster. I wish they could feel ashamed, and be made to pay the price and not get away with it...

ASA - useless oxygen thieves. no skills purely appointed by the gravy train buddy system. Caster Semenya - unfortunate - but its not within the sprit of fair competition to let her compete as a woman is she is not really one? IAAF - "grow some b%&s" and publish the report and findings without any ambiguity already. Bottom line - great for SA if she is legit the world champion - and if not we will be labled cheats! ASA - thanks again for undoing all the good work done by SA RUGBY, SA Cricket and SA 7's Rugby! "ass^&*le"

this whole thing is getting beyond the point of no return. the angle the media is taking now is ridiculous - i desperatly feel for Caster, but then again - that's how a gynecological exam is done - all women go though that (except for the photos-sounds like a crime scene, though)...stirrups and all....this should not surprise anyone. can the media drop this and let us rather know when she'll be competing again!
For Gaberre9/16/2009 1:29 PM
You make me sick Gaberre. You are the racist one. The fact that you would rather support a dictator like Mugabe informs us all what type of person you are. He is an evil person who doesn't care for his own people. You would support him but he would take everything away from you so he can live in the lap of luxury. Here is a tip for you: Try and judge people on what they do and not on the colour of their skin. You are general in your perception of others and have absolutely no concept of the world we live in.
Phumbi9/16/2009 1:23 PM
She shouldnt have been allowed to compete in the first place, Then ASA say there is no truth and its just coz people are jealous - its because she looks like a ma, runs like a man, talks like a man and has testicals? Thats not jealousy, racism or sexism... its the rules of sport, she/he has an unfair advantage.
Carl9/16/2009 1:21 PM
@Pink I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're not a troll. Instead we'll proceed on the basis that you don't think through your position before turning out a bunch of misspelled words. Your "argument" is that since scientists can't create a chromosome they have no right to determine someone's gender. So? Geologists can't produce gold from iron pyrites. That doesn't give me the right to sell "fool's gold" at $900/ounce to unsuspecting suspects. Similarly someone with a Y chromosome or testes won't be welcome in women's athletics.

Boendoe9/16/2009 1:19 PM
Caster, I hope you take the IAAF to court over this. If they don't test all woman before they participate internationally then it is discrimination to single out people afterwards. Good luck for the future!! Remember, even the white South Africans are behind you and is proud of you!
Nick9/16/2009 1:18 PM
You know - I really think that Caster should sue ASA.
Doc9/16/2009 1:18 PM
Humiliating maybe but not more so than a standard gynecological examination which most 18 years olds should already have experienced. If ASA had an ounce of brain power they would have arranged these before she was allowed to compete. Then she could have been withdrawn before her whole medical history was exposed to the world. I believe they were being disingenuous and thought they could rustle a medal at the expense of this totally innocent athlete.

Gaberre, YOU are a racist. Dont brand all whites. The majority of us are very upset by the way this has been handled. You should point fingers at Chuene and ASA for worsening the humiliation that Caster has undergone and by the total lack of understanding they have shown her. They have paraded her around, and anyone with half a brain cell would have seen how uncomfortable she was. I was disgusted by the whole show, and it just gets worse everytime ASA and Chuene open their mouths. They were so desperate for gold that they hung Caster out to dry. Horrible horrible people.
Allan9/16/2009 1:15 PM
This is just sick man. It should have been done with allot more care. Now everyone knows her private details. This is a young women we are talking about and its going to have a lasting effect on her maybe forever. As for all our big mouth so called officials shouting there mouths off before the tests results were released was just stupid as well. The media and our poloticians only made things worse. As for the IAAF they would never have dared treat a person from a first world country like this.

Caster, be strong girl, çause that's what you are. It's not about race, all they're trying to find out is whether her high testerone levels have an advantage over her competitors. I believe that scientists are nothing but professionals like every body in this world ,they'r in business & they can't create a system like a human_b so why do we have to worry or let them determine who/what we are,who determine thier gender, who created thier chromosomes since they can't even create the chromosom that they are using as their tool to determine the gender. So Let those monkeys claim to be God as ussaul we'll see at the end of the days, who's God.
Joe9/16/2009 12:44 PM
Well now ! Lets se Chuene say he never knew about this. These blundering idiots are in charge of sport at national level nogal and for good measure he sits on the IAAF board. What a disgrace. JZ should get involved and fire Chuene's arse.
Gaberre9/16/2009 12:42 PM
I dont know why African countries look to befriend these white dominated countries. Australia filled with EX South African Racists are to be blamed, and so are white minority south africans who keep blaming this poor girl. I listened to SA FM yesterday and i was very disgusted by the white minority who blamed the mother for this. Sis on you. Blatant racists. That is why i will back Mugabe any time of the day. Whites will never change.
JAKO9/16/2009 12:41 PM
I would stop all this testing to determine her gender. i would just ask her to park a car. It might take longer, but it would be cheaper
andrew9/16/2009 12:41 PM
Only an extremely emotionally strong person will be abe to get over this.I fear for Semenya's emotional wellbeing. This is all so wrong, so cruel!!!
Johncarlos9/16/2009 12:40 PM
So Williams was part of the problem all along...why then is he acting all saint? And why are the 'experts' and 'scientists' who conducted this test being held accountable?
Joe9/16/2009 12:39 PM
Well now ! Lets se Chuene say he never knew about this. These blundering i***s are in charge of sport at national level nogal and for good measure he sits on the IAAF board. What a disgrace. JZ should get involved and fire Chuene's arse.
CJ9/16/2009 12:36 PM
SA will do anything and anyone to get exposure.. but in the end they will only reap what they sow. Caster they used you till the very end.
Rogan Dawes9/16/2009 12:34 PM
@G Did you get a personal message from God telling you what gender she is? Besides, this whole discussion is about SEX, not gender. Here is an explanation for you: http://www.who.int/gender/whatisgender/en/index.html
jessica peteresen9/16/2009 12:34 PM
To all the Semenya critics: Birth defect occurs all the time and it is not selective. It just happens. Think of it this way: it could could have been YOU or Me or annyone else for that matter. Who would you have felt? Semenya is the real victim in this saga.
PIP9/16/2009 12:34 PM
Please please ban the word racism, evert time an issue arises with a person of colour, this word crops up. I agree that Caster has been treated unfairly. Lets allow the powers to be to decide the outcome, they have no reason to lie
Frances9/16/2009 12:32 PM
WHEN WILL THEY (ASA) STOP LYING!!! THEY MAKE ME SICK!
The Stig9/16/2009 12:32 PM
This is getting so old. The IAAF requested that test be done by the ASA before the World Champs, this was never done. There were question back at the Junior World Champs and guess what the ASA did nothing, i think they were hoping that nothing would happen as she was clearly a medal candidate. Then some how it is leaked that the IAAF would like tests done after she wins the Gold, which is also wrong and i am sure (hoping) that the IAAF will deal with that. She is not the first person to under go these tests, there have been other some of which were told that they may no longer race. The biggest problem here is that the idiots, you can decide who they are, in SA decide to blow the whole thing up and try use her as a tool to their own ends. They were the ones that made it a point of interest and gave the media a open invitation use her to sell their papers/mags and so on. Now there is a report of feedback indicating that there could be a problem and everyone is shouting that it is unfair that this is in the open media, let us not forget who made it a media sensation with their TV shouting and press releases in the first place. I feel for her no matter what the outcome, but for me this is squarely at the feet of the ASA. Had they done their job correctly we would only have heard about it after everything was verified and there would have been less hype. As for the Racism thing, grow up people, it is the IAAF's job to ensure that everyone completes on the same playing field and their right as an INDEPENDENT global body, of which we are a member, to request what ever test they like.
Candi9/16/2009 12:30 PM
I hope the public all over the world will support her, seeing that her government (Julius Malema the main instigator) has failed her. ASA should be held responsible for all the emotional damage she has suffered and will suffer in the future. I hope she finds some legal representation and takes on the ASA for this circus they have caused, from her medical, which should be held confidential, situation. Invasion of "ultimate" privacy as well as doing tests under false pretences. Surely it is illegal of them to not have informed her of exactly what they were doing???????
Sinudeity9/16/2009 12:28 PM
Dudes, papers, everyone. Just leave caster alone please.
T9/16/2009 12:26 PM
If this is such a biggie, let her compete against men and women!!! I really feel for her, one would swear she created herself! You are in my thoughts and prayers, Caster. You are a shining human being!
Jeremy 9/16/2009 12:25 PM
This whole Saga, is absolutly devoid of any humanity! ASA, IAAF, Media, everyone has hung this girl out to dry, and taken pictures! I am disgusted to the core of my being! WTF?
Sam9/16/2009 12:25 PM
totally agree with you G. How humiliating it must be for her! Its disgusting what she is going through!!!
Graeme9/16/2009 12:24 PM
The lack of compassion in the handling of this issue is beyond description. ASA should be held accountable in every aspect, their lives go on unhindered.............not so for Semenya, I empathise with her.
joel9/16/2009 12:23 PM
I think IAAF must stop undermining some countries, because if the gold medal was won by a white lady there could have been no comments or questioning on her gender. she won the medal because she has done her homework finish and klaar so stop critisizing.
Diane 9/16/2009 12:21 PM
What has happened to Caster is disgraceful and I believe her dignity has been stripped by ASA. She can not help for whatever the results of the tests are. Lewis is right no one should be put through what this poor girl has had to endure. This only shows the mentality and the level of immaturity the ASA has. Caster if you feel like a woman no one can take that away from you. You are, where you are, because of who you are. Take care and God Bless you are his creation. To hell with what mere mortals think.
Lee9/16/2009 12:20 PM
we as society have not clearly not developed further than than the days of Saartje Baartman (1816) We seriously need to take a deep look into ourselves and our media - it is time that we dictated to our media what we want from them not the otherway round. medical leaks are abhorent the medical personal and the journalist and the newpaper that printed the leaks and all the media that quoted the leaked information need to be brought to the line - and as for ASA and the international athletics world - well shame on both you.
Alan9/16/2009 12:20 PM
F*****s - yes, print the word, they are f******s! If the stirrup story is true, I'm even more disgusted. The GIRL should have gotten up and beat them with it! How do you humiliate anybody like this? What are we, savages? Words, other than the above, fail me. I am indignant right now, downright angry, and I don't even know her.
NorMel9/16/2009 12:14 PM
I knew it was the ASA's fault all along. They were so quick to pass the blame. Leonard Chuene was getting so defensive at the press conference - he HAD to be hiding something. This will certainly shut him up along with Juli-@ss Malema and Winnie. This had NOTHING to do with race as they tried to make it out, but had everything to do with their incompetence!!!!! Come back from this one Julius and Leonard... We're waiting...
Von9/16/2009 12:14 PM
Oh my soul - how can anyone be treated like that. Does she even want to continue in Athletics, I know that I wouldn't. I cannot believe it, it is disgusting how this 18 year old is and was treated. Leave her alone now
Hayley9/16/2009 12:14 PM
I am sorry but this is going a little bit over board now and getting completely out of hand. Why are the laws protecting Human Rights and ones dignity not being applied here and being challenged because they are not being adhered to?
G9/16/2009 12:09 PM
The poor girl- is it really for scientists to decide what gender she is, if God already has?
Point Blank9/16/2009 12:05 PM
Poor girl, and ASA just walk away without so much as word, stupid i****s, they ruined the girls life....
