Briatore quits as Renault boss

Paris - Team chief Flavio Briatore on Wednesday sensationally quit the Renault Formula One team, which has been hit by serious allegations of cheating at last year's Grand Prix in Singapore, the team announced in a statement.

Renault said in a short statement that Briatore and Pat Symonds, the director of engineering, had both left the team ahead of a meeting Monday with the sport's world ruling body the FIA to explain recent allegations of race-fixing.

The statement said: "The team announces that its team chief, Flavio Briatore, and its director of engineering Pat Symonds have quit the team."

Renault have been summoned to appear before the FIA's International Motor Sport Council in Paris on September 21 to answer claims by Nelson Piquet junior that he was asked by Renault to crash deliberately during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, so giving a race-winning advantage to his team-mate Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

If Renault are found guilty of race-fixing, they could be expelled from the sport for the role they played in an affair which has been dubbed 'Crash-gate'.

The team had denied all of the claims made against them by Piquet junior, who was dismissed by the team in July after being told he had failed to perform to expectations.

But on Wednesday Renault appeared to partly admit some role in the controversy by adding in the statement they "would not contest the FIA's recent allegations concerning the Singapore Grand Prix".

The statement added: "Before participating at the FIA's International Motor Sport Council hearing in Paris on September 21, the team will make no further comment."

A report by The Times on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources, claimed the FIA had offered Renault second-in-command immunity from punishment in exchange for full disclosure about 'Crash-gate'.

The report said that Symonds was told that if he came clean over how and why Nelson Piquet junior drove his car into the barriers in Singapore in 2008, he would escape sanctions.

Former driver Piquet and his father, three-time world champion Nelson Piquet senior, claimed that Renault conspired to fix the outcome of last year's race.

At the Grand Prix on September 28, 2008 Alonso began the race in 15th position. But after making a very early pit stop to refuel, Nelsinho Piquet junior crashed into a wall, prompting the safety car out.

As Alonso's rivals then gradually disappeared into the pits to refuel, the Spaniard catapulted himself up into the virtual lead to go on and win his first race in a year.

In response to the allegations Renault accused Piquet of blackmail and announced they were launching criminal proceedings against him and his father.

Briatore denied all the accusations against him -- notably conspiring with team management and Piquet to cause a deliberate accident -- saying they were "outrageous lies".

Stewards investigating the claims interviewed Symonds at the Belgian Grand Prix late last month.

@EXF1 NUT, recken we can race the golf carts? F1 is truly going to the dogs. Wonder how the Aussie V8 series is doing? Wonder if there are any cheats in Formula Vee and Ford?
clicman9/19/2009 1:46 PM
How dare you Nelson. Remember 1983 when you stole Championship victory froem Prost by winning last race with illegal gas. Are you the right person to ask for fairness ?
Annie9/17/2009 3:39 PM
My word - what is happening - but to be honest, I still love my F1 racing, GP and Superbikes !!!
kk9/17/2009 3:02 PM
Disclosure by Piquet Jnr. well after the event is sheer dishonesty and fraud! He should never be allowed another drive in F1 as he too colluded with the decision made. Ignoring the team orders would have been a wiser choice for all concerned!
DUDE9/17/2009 1:51 PM
This is what this came to, no wonder I have lost intrest in the sport, that they have to resort to sensational crap to keep intrest in it. Boring Boring Boring. F1 now has to produce a gosip mag for all the nonsense they get up to - just dont call it HEAT, call it Cheat
Sorry Renault9/17/2009 12:45 PM
Good for you Symonds, don't give in to them to turn against your team. As for this little snotty nosed kid, there is not a team anywhere who will give him a ride now. Good riddens. All the teams have strategies, some a little over the top, but they all work together as a team, what goes on in the team stays in the team, the drivers knows that. Sorry to see two great guys leave.

F1 is Dead, been that way for the last 2 years. This stuff is no good for the fans, and what is a sport without fans. RIP.. off to play golf or something.....
Ortos9/17/2009 12:15 PM
Gotta agree with CJ, takes 2 to tango, that little creep should be shot in public and the idiot who made the call be hung next door. F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport now its the laughing stock. I`m going to start watching "NORWEGIAN CELL THROUGHING" !

I cant belief that a little SnotKop punk like Piquet is going to be the end of Flavio Briatore. A person that has broth more to F1 then the Piquet family together. Piquet would have been better of to stay in the hotel with some of is fathers old prostitutes. All that Flavio did was to use him for what he was good for and that was to crash his car. Long live Flavio Briatore. I feel sorry for all the Super Models out there. The mans got time on his hands. You go Boet

Alonso must have known about the whole thing. Otherwise he would not have gone in for the early pit stop. Bye Bye Alonso. No Ferrari drive for you. Mind you, Ferrari have also cheated in similar fashion with MS during qualifying. He only got a slap on the wrist.

@Spot! Waa' val jy uit bru? You must be talking about a Donkey cart vs a chariot...no comparison. Maybe you must comment on the Malema page..or somewhere else. U're totally in the wrong forum. @ Carrot...I have the same feeling. All the years I've been watcing F1, seems such a waste now. Are there ANY honourable sports Organisations, Administrators and Competitors, anywhere in the world? Well at least the Boks brought home another cup (Bafana Bafana, please note), fairly and squarely against 16 men and 2 reserves, I may add and remain on top in the world.
Sharkie439/17/2009 11:02 AM
Piquet is an arrogent little schmutz. He couldn't make it in the A1 GP, because he was not good enough. His Father got him into F1. He thinks the sun shines out of his ............! I hope they ban him from racing.
CARROT9/17/2009 8:40 AM
DROP F1. IT IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.
cj9/17/2009 7:09 AM
Im sure renault aren't the first to do this and probably wont be the last, if piquet hadn't lost his seat we would know nothing about it. As for piquet agreeing to crash, he is just as responsible and should have his super license taken away.
Spot9/16/2009 6:31 PM
Racists, the car is racist!
glen9/16/2009 5:01 PM
Feel sorry for renault. Im sure they had no idea that this happened . We need every team in F1 to keep it going .
Dilligaf9/16/2009 3:42 PM
What a bunch of cheats. Also funny how Piquet only broke the story now, I suppose had he not been fired, he would never had said a word.
D Man9/16/2009 3:38 PM
I wonder what excuses old piquet will come with of all the other times that he crashed. Seems to be a bit of sour grapes to me.
Thembalabantubonke9/16/2009 3:35 PM
Odd that Alonso keeps getting involved in some of these major scandals. With McLaren, he benefited from the theft of Ferrari technology and now people crash to help him. What a shame for a great race like Alonso to keep getting involved in these cheating scandals. @Hammi What overtaking maneuver?
Danie9/16/2009 3:30 PM
Oh dear! Initially I thought the allegation was nonsense. Now I think it's probably true.
Hammi9/16/2009 3:09 PM
@ Massa - yip,I do agree. However, the overtaking manouvre by Lewis in the last few hundred metres in the last race is really something that I cant get to grips with myself....who helped him???
HVR9/16/2009 3:00 PM
Look at the pic of Flavio. Can't believe Heidi Klum let that "hit" her nevermind mind touch her without a 6 foot pole ... well maybe she did.
Anonymous9/16/2009 2:58 PM
Have never been a fan of Briatore's. All the big yacht bullsh#t and model wives etc. Not a man to be trusted methinks. Am sorry for Renault, though, because they probably had nothing to do with crashgate.
Louis9/16/2009 2:56 PM
If it is true, I hope he gets fined heavily and he goes to jail like all the other dishonest people
jackey9/16/2009 2:37 PM
I Guess Piquet was right !!!!
Massa9/16/2009 2:26 PM
Does that mean Lewis won the championship by 3 points and not 1?
F1 Fan9/16/2009 2:24 PM
Where there is smoke there must be fire!
Jonny9/16/2009 1:52 PM
"It's ugly when the crooks fall out!". This is the end of the road for the Renault F1 team as well.
gotcha9/16/2009 1:48 PM
yeah, where there is smoke there is sure to be fire, them two quitting is as good as a signed confession of their guilt. Good for Nelson Piquet for not folding to the threats of these two. Renault probably throwing them out for this mess, must have cost Renault a pretty penny to get rid of them, but a small price compared to being thrown out of F1.
Lily White9/16/2009 1:48 PM
damn cheats! They should be prosecuted.
