Cape Town – The old “who ate all the pies?” jibe about the Proteas is about to lose some lustre … at least as far as the national captain is concerned.

A significantly slimmed-down Graeme Smith appeared at a Sahara Park Newlands media briefing on Tuesday, where the Cape Cobras announced their initial 20-strong squad for the maiden, US$6-million Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India from October 8 to 23.

And it is not an incidental occurrence – he told Sport24 afterwards it is part of his renewed desire to play for South Africa for “five or six more years”.

That is good news for the vast majority of South African cricket fans, as it would mean the big left-handed batsman, presently 28, potentially being available for the Proteas until the age of around 34, and possibly including two further World Cups: the 2011 one on the Subcontinent and the 2015 version scheduled for Australia and New Zealand.

Whether he would still be captain by his twilight years remains to be seen, as he has dropped increasing hints of late that he might relish the opportunity to focus squarely on his own game again -- having led South Africa since 2003 -- and was keen that captaincy succession plans gather pace.

While late-winter rain lashed down, leaving vast pools of water on the Newlands outfield, Smith said he had enjoyed the relative rarity of a meaningful off-season.

“As national captain you never really shut off unless you get a holiday, but the big thing for me was getting away from the emotional pressures, the pressures of winning games, scoring runs, practising, and just constantly being ‘ready’.

“Hopefully the break’s given me a bit of edge back. It’s been nice to train quite hard; I’ve been able to spend some time in the gym, get strong again, especially with the tennis-elbow issue I’ve had.

“I’m looking forward to the start of the season -- you feel the motivation coming back and get excited about playing cricket again.

“There was some time for me to free my mind of the game, although the surgery obviously took a bit of time and my book-launch tour was a bit more draining than I thought it would be!

“But there has been a lot of rest in between, certainly. I’m starting to get back into the mould now; we have a national selection meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) and then a camp for the Champions Trophy on August 28.”

Asked about his noticeably lean and mean look – physically, Smith is looking a lot closer again to the imposing young batsman who plundered two Test double centuries on the 2003 England tour – he replied: “Ja, I’m still in the process of getting there. A couple more weeks will help get me really ready.

“I’ve been working hard here with Rob Walter, the new SA fitness trainer, and with the people at Province.

“So it feels like I’m back as an 18- or 19-year-old again, grafting hard. But I really want to give myself the best opportunity to play for five or six years more for South Africa. I want to be fit enough to achieve that.”

The opening batsman told the briefing it had been an exciting day for him, ahead of the press conference, because he “started hitting some tennis balls” for the first time since his elbow operation.

“Hopefully I’ll have progressed a lot further by the Proteas training camp, and be ready for full net practices.

“There’s always that wait-and-see factor when you’ve wrestled with a condition like mine (for a while) but I’ve had the surgery now and medically I understand it’s a definite fix.

“It’s mainly now about getting the muscles back up to the standard required for playing some long innings.”

@gph - you tell her mate!! We'd also like to know on what she bases her opinion? @ Mrs Smith - also had a chuckle at your response, think it sums the situation very well indeed!!
gph8/20/2009 12:16 PM
@ anne - hahaha. wait - hahahahaha. firstly, the most successful captain sa has had is a ghastly captain? jeeziz, by what standard do you measure smith's record? it's tough to read your comment as anything other than laughably ridiculous since it takes such a radical departure from fact. second, i assume you know graeme on a personal basis and are therefore perfectly positioned to pronounce on his character? if not, i recommend you keep your unfounded thoughts to yourself. third, speak for yourself. not only can i stand graeme, i actively like and support him and his project as skipper. as such, i care very much that he is fit (as i imagine many sa cricket fans do).
Mrs Smith @ Anne8/19/2009 4:02 PM
Anne my dear do not be bitter my sweet, if he didn't call you afterwards it is only that you didn't give him enough reason to. Hold of with letting the people into the goodie jar.
@GAD8/19/2009 1:36 PM
Sports Ho hahahahaha---she was probably holding a pie. @ Cricket Fan - you need to change your name dude and stick to other sports.

so explain then why a team like pakistan are crap more often than not then on a few occasions play well and it just happens to be in a tournament and they win it, you say i accept medoicre performances, where did i say that? the FACT is 20/20 and ODI are a lottery, its not a proper test of skills if compared to test cricket, anyway if you look at the ODI ratio they have won 75% of their games, im afraid youre the one with a thick skin and brain
Cricket fan8/19/2009 12:00 PM
@Neil A....I give up with the likes of yourself...just too thick to sink in. You are one of many who accept mediocre performances from the so called proffesionals of the game. I rest my case.
MasterG8/19/2009 11:43 AM
@Stevo-It's not my intention to argue with you but honestly Smith has been in the team when he least deserved the place.Fine he's got good averages in both forms of the game but an average is but an average. You score 200 runs once and three ducks and the average is as good as that of a person scoring four 50s.Who would you prefer of the two players? Smith is highly unreliable, fat, arrogant and inconsistent.I have nothing against him but this is how he is.He'd fit perfectly in an Ozzie team.

Smith do you think that you will lose weight if you continue to eat steaks and chips at restuarants in 2nd ave.just a thought.

Anne, were you one of the Sports Ho's Graham palmed off at a night club? Bit if bitterness there! @Pathetic Fans - Ha ha. Yip, lot of arm chair experts out there.
NeilA @ cricket fan8/19/2009 10:46 AM
sorry but the only fool here is you, your major tournaments you talk about are lottery games 20/20 and ODI`s, where in fact we have played very well up to a point, and then its one bad game, the test matches i refer to are a proper examination of cricketers skills, you pratt, when you eventually learn more about cricket come chat again, until then stop making yourself look like an idiot, if thats possible
Ant8/19/2009 10:29 AM
Anne - your type make me sick! I suppose you'd like a captain like Hansie the cheat? Let's remember that Graeme Smith has the best average for any opening batsman in South Africa, ever. He has a captaincy record second to none, he has taken a young team to the pinnacle of world cricket. His team has achieved number one ranking in Test and One day cricket. He also happens to be an outstanding person, a true gentleman, and one of the most respected captains in world cricket. So what's your problem?
stevo8/19/2009 10:28 AM
Master G, an opening batsman who averages over 50 in Tests and 40 in ODIs can play a bit. He's not the most elegent, I agree, but he's damn effective and will end up being obe the the leading batsman of all time when his time is up.

Well done Smithie - have you had a chat to Paul Harris?
Bollie8/19/2009 10:26 AM
I was worried about this. Always thought I had a chance as a pro-sportsman with my hard earned 20kg add-on. Guess I'll have to stick to beers and biltong on the couch now. Graeme, you not eating that??? All in jest, I'm glad our boys are getting back to their best! Lets take all the trophies this season!
Stephen8/19/2009 10:21 AM
@Joe, get lost why dont you emigrtate to Zimbabwe or Darfur or something. Least the team is doing better than some other sporting code i know of...
biffy8/19/2009 10:13 AM
South African fans are the most fickle in the world. Smith is naturally a big oke so give him credit for shedding dome kilos. You cannot argue with his record as captain or his batting average. Both world class. Bring on the poms.
Cricket fan8/19/2009 10:13 AM
@Neil A.. There are just too many fools like you who comment in these kind of forums. Yes , SA have won tours in other countries, Test and ODI's. When people say the proteas are chokers, they refer to their poor performace in major tournaments ie. losing at knock out stages. If or when they do win a major, then I'm sure that label will not be used but until then I will also label them as CHOKERS!!.
Chris8/19/2009 10:12 AM
Nice one Graeme! Guys please remember that he needed many Cortisone shots last season for his elbow. Side effect is weight gain!
mo8/19/2009 10:09 AM
Good Smith, it shows listen to your critics. I always thought that was disturbing your game. Great stuff man
MasterG8/19/2009 9:57 AM
You can lose weight but that wont change the way you play,Smith will still be bowled a yorker and get out for a duck often even if he weighs 70kg. I'd prefer a fat Inzamam Ul Haq that scores
Pathetic fans8/19/2009 9:32 AM
Good grief, you armchair experts have a lot to say! I wonder how fit (not to mention overweight) you are?
theodore burns8/19/2009 9:30 AM
LOL Joe, maybe it was all the PIES that they were choking on.....?
Anne8/19/2009 9:25 AM
Ghastly captain & person..........we all cannot stand him!!! So who cares!
NeilA @ Joe8/19/2009 9:18 AM
wow they must be huge chokers to win test matches in england and australia, toss head!
yesman8/19/2009 9:12 AM
It is about time Smith losses weight. He was never an example when it came to fitness. This will result in a fitter, better performing team in the long run
Hansie8/19/2009 9:11 AM
I have read in a column on SS that Kallis & Boucher have also lost 6 kg each. Good one guys.
Hilton8/19/2009 9:02 AM
Good Boy Graeme......Not so much Boucher....But Kallis looks pathetic......
Lifetime Proteas fan8/19/2009 9:00 AM
A slim Bouch and Kallis you ask - read this ! http://www.supersport.com/cricket/columns.aspx?id=7960&headline=New%20age%20dawns
Chris G8/19/2009 8:50 AM
Damn, seeing a fat Smith always gave me a good laugh. At least there's no mention of Kallis or Boucher having lost any weight.
Joe8/19/2009 8:48 AM
You may loose the Pie Eater tag, but unfortunately the Cough,...Cough,..Gasp,...Gasp, choke,... cough, sniff.... gag,..... CHOKERS TAG Remains!!!! Good Luck!
Cammie8/19/2009 8:33 AM
Here's wishing you and the lads a great 2009/2010 Season Graeme. May your successes of the past 18-months continue, and may you continue to be a dominant force in all formats of the game!
Maestro8/19/2009 8:30 AM
Glad to hear he has lost weight, now we need Kallis and Boucher to follow his example! Keep it up Graeme, a fitter and stronger version of you will be a real benefit SA. Am sure it will show in your result too. Well done.
Marcel8/19/2009 8:30 AM
I recently ran the Knysna half marathon, and to my suprise found Messrs Smith, Boucher and De Villiers running with me!! Ill be honest in saying that in the past, Ive been a massive critic of the proteas ballooning waistlines, but its great to see them getting stuck in!! Keep up the good work guys!!
Macki8/19/2009 8:25 AM
Well out Smithie!!!!
EWM8/19/2009 8:18 AM
Boucher and Kalis next in line to loose weight yet ???
