Johannesburg – Graeme Smith was rewarded for his leading role in one of the most successful years in South African cricket history when he was selected as the country's cricket Player of the Year on Tuesday evening.

The Proteas captain received his award at a glitzy event in Sandton where he was also named the Test Player of the Year after his team achieved an historic series wins against England and Australia.

The Proteas in July 2008 won their first Test series in 43 years in England after Smith almost single-handedly helped South Africa win the second Test at Edgbaston and the series with an unbeaten innings of 154.

His century at the end of last year in the first Test against Australia in Perth also laid the foundation for the visitors' successful 414 run chase, one of the highest scores in the history of the game.

Under Smit's leadership, the Proteas also knocked the Aussies off the throne as the top ODI team in the world.

In 2008, the 28-year-old opening batsman was also the leading run maker in the world and the first South African to score more than 1 600 Test runs in a calendar year.

AB de Villiers was named both the ODI Player of the Year and the Fans' Cricketer of the Year.

JP Duminy was named the Twenty20 player and the Players' Player of the Year.

Roelof van der Merwe beat Wayne Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe in the Newcomer of the Year category. He also took the Best Player in this year's MTN one-day series.

Both Van der Merwe and Parnell are the favourites for the International Cricket Board's Newcomer of the Year award.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) executive head, Gerald Majola, said the awards were the crowning glory of a "golden year for the Proteas".

"It is quite fitting that Graeme is honoured in this way, seeing how he led the Proteas to their best season yet," said Majola.

"The excellent performance by several youngsters over the past year will also guarantee the Proteas' successful future."

Charl Langeveldt and Imraan Khan were respectively announced as the Pro20 and SuperSport Player of the Year. Titans' Richard Pybus (Coach of the Year) and Marais Erasmus (Referee of the Year) were also honoured.

Claude Henderson was named by the South African Players Association as the Most Valuable Player and the Local Players' Player of the Year while the Lions' Dane Vilas was named the Domestic Newcomer of the Year.

@Lont. Good comments! I believe you are one of the few in this column that actually understands cricket and do not get your opinions from tabloids like so many others.
Ross7/2/2009 9:16 PM
All very well with all your awards and whatever - but when are you going to get rid of your CHOKER weakness - have another look at the video of that semi - final.
anonymous user7/2/2009 1:53 PM
Graeme deserves his award for test captain of the year, thats what hes good at....ODI's / T20 spare a thought for Johan Botha , who would have done well as captain and bowler. Duminy deserves every bit of his award and so does AB de villiers, the rest need to pull up their socks , including Kallis, stats didnt get him an award here. More importantly , bring home the gold / sliverware for your country.
RL7/2/2009 11:50 AM
JP's stats speak for themselves so let's remove the veil of the clan gowns shall we and realise that despite stumbling on the final hurdle (again) the team has had an awesome year. JP, Wayne, AB, Roelie good on ya lads. the rest of your armchair criticis really need to get a life.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 2:37 PM
Seeing alot of comments of JP this and that, but come on ...how long did it take for AB to get going before he started to perform consistently, JP had one chance took has done well from the word go,he will only get better and will become the best player in SA cricket...
Anonymous User7/1/2009 1:17 PM
Cant argue with the awards they seem fair enough apart from JP getting the pro 20 award, that is big shock! Kallis should have got that award and it would have been great to see due to all the unneccessary flak he recieved for not being a pro 20 player...he proved the doubters wrong and hell he was even choosen in the world XI for pro 20! JP didnt even make that team but he gets the award,,,,,hmmmmm
Anonymous User7/1/2009 1:02 PM
Jp Duminy Pro 20 player of the year!!!?? WTF!! What the hell has he done to deserve that award!! Its complete bias and utter rubbish, players like Kallis and even Parnell should have won that award.......Duminy is one of the most over rated cricketers ever.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 12:33 PM
I see that people like being back seat drivers it's easy to control your remote and never think wat it takes to be great let alone good.I dare any of u so called cricket lovers to dispute the stat and give any avidence they are incorrect.@boela1 JP came in an unknown and showed class how many player don't deep in form? give me just one?@Jean give me Evidence or shut up... Zolani7/1/2009 8:54 AM
Graeme Smith, Is a fantastic Cricketer, all the International Cricketers know it, only the few chanel changers and hi lite watches in Sa seem to disagree, you go Graeme
class of 20067/1/2009 8:51 AM
Smith and Kallis played a game of cricket almost every second day this year, and last, the SA team has had a non stop Schedule since last year, Bangledesh,Pakistan,India,England,Australia, And only lost one series on home soil, then all the ODI and IPL and World Cup, WHEN are they supposed to get time to train. Do you know what mental concentration it takes to stand in the slips day in and out, catching edges off Dale Steyns Bowling, Then still having to Concentrate for hours while balls are flying at you at 140kmph, Stand on the N1 face a car and just before the car hits you, you have a fraction of a second to jump left or right, and your out if the driver swerves your way to
Patriot7/1/2009 8:46 AM
@LONDT You no what the simularity is between a Hole and Opinion.????????????? any Proper cricket watcher knows what it takes, SMITH, desererved the Honour, Check out Cric info the stats speak for themselves
Anonymous User7/1/2009 8:44 AM
What a shame. Smith gets the glory and the boys like Kallis, a wonderful all rounder, does the work. And what about Mickey Arthur, not a mention of him. All his hard work coaching. Thats S.A. gratitude. Dammit guys, wake up.
Jimbo7/1/2009 8:35 AM
The 2 King Edward boys representing. Well done Smitty and Vilas.
Athol7/1/2009 8:35 AM
So what have all you Smith-knockers been smoking? Doesn't 1600 plus runs in a calendar year and a Test average of around 50 say enough for the man's ability? What about his series-winning knock of 154 n.o. at Edgbaston last July? When all is said and done, 20/20 cricket is hit and giggle stuff. True cricket followers will know that test cricket is the only pure form of the game
Anonymous User7/1/2009 8:29 AM
Well I am glad that 2 beers don't make me reek of alcohol. I find it hard to believe he stayed at a party till 3 and only had 2 beers - stop the bulls*** and tell us the truth. If you don't, the blood results will.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 8:25 AM
Quite frankly Smith doesn't deserve his award and neither does Duminy. Both were over-rated in their respective categories.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 8:07 AM
That's retardad guyz look at the runs 1600 now how could any of u non sports people say he does not deserve it lets see wat any of u can do given the mentle i bet u could not even get a single nod.Don't forget just becouse he was helped by his teamates yes "Team" u see cricket is not golf u rely on the rest of team to win not one guy just becouse he is captain.Smith u did us proud that's why u'll be captain of the year no one else can go and beat England and Australia at home/
Pat M7/1/2009 7:55 AM
Congratulations to all the cricketers not just to the above who received awards. I sincerely hope that Graeme Smith is now going to do something about his weight and his level of fitness.
john7/1/2009 7:53 AM
Well done Graeme and the rest of the boys! There have been many highs and lows in the last 2 years of cricket but undoubtedly the quality of cricket being produced by the SA cricket right now appears to be some of finest we have seen for many, many years. You have reignited our interest in the sport and we're behind all the way.. Well deserved! Keep up the good work
chez7/1/2009 7:52 AM
Viva Graeme Smith Viva!!
Jean7/1/2009 7:48 AM
Okay I am really done - I cannot beleive this - I am sure Graeme Smith has something on some-one big in cricket. There were and are better players than he could dream to be - he may have been good in his day - but that day has left him seriously - a good captain - maybe with a push but player of teh year no way.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 7:46 AM
Well done Smithy, you deserve all your awards and hopefully now all the "twee g** jakkals" fans out there will shut there mouths. Congrats to all the award winners!
boela17/1/2009 7:44 AM
JP Duminy's overrated ability as a Twenty20 player was voted in by 10% on The No 1 reason for the Proteas' defeat in the ICC World Twenty20 semi-finals to Pakistan was: jet he receive the International Pro20 Cricketer of the Year: JP Duminy award, this can only happen in SA, its like Goverment , the more corrupt you are the higher position you get
boela17/1/2009 7:39 AM
I presume that Standard Bank Pro20 Cricketer of the Year: Charl Langeveldt was not part of the T20 because he is either not good enought or he is not a choker.
COLLEEN THOMPSON7/1/2009 7:36 AM
WHAT ABOUT KALLIS?????
Cricket Fan7/1/2009 7:33 AM
I see there was no mention of Mickey Arthur who just so happened to be the SA coach during this amazing year. Well done to Mickey Arthur, Graeme Smith and the boys, they can take great pride in what they have achieved.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 7:21 AM
This is a joke isn't it?? Please wake me when it's over
BOB7/1/2009 7:19 AM
Was his prize a "choker chain" cos that's all he deserves
Burgiesburnin7/1/2009 7:17 AM
I thought Gibbs would get it.
Barry7/1/2009 7:17 AM
what was that a Dog Collar for being the biggest show off and choker in the history os SA Criket
Anonymous User7/1/2009 5:03 AM
The trophy should be a chokers bracelet
Londt7/1/2009 4:59 AM
In my opinion, Graeme Smith is one of the worst captains we have ever had. It was only thanks to good support from senior (and junior for that matter) players that enabled us to beat other countries (also largely due to sub-standard selections by them, let's not kid ourselves). We still do not have a "major" trophy in our cabinet. Imagine how players like Johan Botha, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher, etc. etc. feel. Darn shame.

We all know that FIFA are the head honchos of the beautiful game. They set out laws that govern the sport and we are supposed to fall in line and follow. Now I agree that there must be rules in place for everyone to follow but what I don’t get, is how FIFA are currently strutting around like they own South Africa, says Mr Controversy.
