New feather in Steyn’s cap

Cape Town – It is tempting to brand it Dale Steyn’s equivalent feat to a certain wrong-footed, World Cup-winning dropped goal in rugby.

Deep in extra time of the 2003 RWC final, of course, England’s Jonny Wilkinson caught the Wallabies off-guard in a split second of inspiration, breaking the deadlock decisively with his immortal effort off his infinitely less natural right foot.

Before Monday in Nagpur, South African strike bowler Steyn, while hardly a one-trick pony, was generally most renowned for his lethal out-swingers at pace.

Suddenly, though, shell-shocked India – and the world, too – have learned of his new-found ability to bend the ball the other way on a sustained basis.

The result was carnage, with the Proteas now handsomely placed to strike for a big win over the ICC’s No 1-ranked side after an eventful day three of the first Test.

Thanks to Steyn’s almost out-of-the-blue spell of destruction, which netted him seven wickets in India’s insipid first innings and the precious additional one of in-form Virender “Boom Boom” Sehwag in the follow-on, India remain a distant 259 runs behind the ruthless tourists with eight wickets in hand.

Perhaps only the great Sachin Tendulkar, who had scrapped his way to a subdued, unbeaten 15 off 48 balls by the close, stands significantly in the way of South Africa going 1-0 up with one to play.

With the home side severely missing injured stalwarts Rahul Dravid (their own bedrock version of Jacques Kallis), Yuvraj Singh and VVS Laxman, the little maestro has it all to do to keep the Proteas at bay – and keep in mind that he has a strangely mediocre record against these opponents on Indian soil.

But if most people don’t like Mondays, then MS Dhoni’s side doubtless detest them even more now, thanks to Steyn’s magical burst of reverse and conventional in-swing bowling.

India’s first innings spectacularly unravelled in a 37-minute period after tea, where they slid from the relative sanctuary of 221 for four, in reply to the Proteas’ beefy 558, to 233 all out.

For sheer suddenness, it was all very Waqar Younis-like … the great Pakistani toe- and timber-hunter would have been proud of Steyn’s post-interval salvo of 3.4-2-1-5.

Certainly the 26-year-old Phalaborwa Express, albeit with many years of good cricket ahead of him, will be hard-pressed to repeat a dose like that, even as he registered a personal best innings return of 7/51 in 16.4 overs.

A sign of his burgeoning nous, in his 37th Test, was that he basically let the ball do the talking, operating as pacemen often do on the Subcontinent in the high 130s in kilometres/hour terms rather than bending his back too much to crank it into the mid-140s we know he is capable of on tracks that boast greater carry.

He proved that you can still be lethal and intimidating at those reduced knots; several of the Indian tail-enders didn’t especially fancy getting into line against him, did they?

It seemed fitting that back in the SuperSport studio in Johannesburg was one Fanie de Villiers, an illustrious swing bowler of two decades back whose match-winning 6/43 at Sydney is the stuff of local folklore.

“That’s the first time Dale’s taken so many wickets swinging it his wrong way,” correctly observed De Villiers. “We’re wanting to encourage reverse swing (among South African bowlers) … and that’s beautiful bowling.”

Since his return to fullest fitness, after a frustratingly nagging hamstring injury, midway through the recent home series against England, Steyn has simply gone from strength to strength, and in three Tests so far in 2010 – including the present, incomplete one at Nagpur – he sports 21 wickets.

You would expect that startling tally to rise further before South Africa even shift their base to Kolkata …

If your posting was intended to promote yourself as a rather unintelligent person with no grasp of either the article or the sports in question, then consider it mission accomplished (in splendid fashion). If however this was not your intent, then perhaps stick to the reading and leave the comments section alone.

What is getting carried away with by being proud of a great achievement? And 'white' has stuff-all to do with it - we are proud of all our sporting achievers. Have a plate of sour grapes to go with the chip on your shoulder!

Some of the comments miss the point Houwing is making. He is comparing the moment, "breaking the dreadlock" as he puts it, when things changed dramatically for England in Rugby and now SA in cricket. He is not comparing Wilkinson to Steyn or cricket to Rugby. Please carefully read before you comment. Secondly, anon, stop bashing Smith. South Africa is on the verge of becoming number 1 again under his captaincy - no mean achievment - even though the trophy cupboard is bare. He cannot solely be held accountable for this. Players, like Steyn did today, must take ownership and sieze the moment when it is presented to them.

south africans, please don't get so carried away! this is only one game and you're counting your chickens before they're hatched. beware of mud(or rotten eggs) on your face. some of the letters seem to indicate that some guys are really desperate to have a 'white' hero! congratulations, steyn.

Must be Pommies squealing about the comparison between Wilkinson and Steyn. I thought that the best drop-goal in World Cup history came from the boot of Joel Stransky. Let's hope Dale and the other bowlers can repeat the performance tomorrow.

whilst steyn is a great player, please DONT use the words 'World Cup winning' in conjunction with anything to do with the proteas. under smith, the proteas have shown themselves to be incapable of winning major tournaments, and the WC is no different. the proteas have shown themselves to be great players, but are led badly by a egomaniac hotshot with no great track record to speak of. and being nmbr 1 for a short while is certainly not good enough.
Big Fan2/8/2010 6:50 PM
Which other Protea spends an hour at the back of the Wanders' change-room signing autographs for young fans? Which Protea takes an armfull of drinks and hands them out to the security contingent posted on the player's flight of steps at Centurian? Ego Smith? Big-mouth Boucher? Zol Gibbs? Perhaps: I'm-the-king Kallis? No - DALE STEYN - (who can also bowl a bit...) You are a great and worthy role-model. You are a credit to yourself and to cricket. Long live & long, long play.
Stephen2/8/2010 6:48 PM
@Reynard get lost your moron. How stupid must a person be if they hate the Proteas but still read the articles about them. That is so dumb, but seeing your comments you are practically retarded. Isnt there an All Black forum you need to be on. Idiot
Michael2/8/2010 6:31 PM
Only in SA would great cricket be compared to rugby... *sigh*
Pete2/8/2010 6:24 PM
Imagine Parnell and Morne suddenly clicking as well. Too ghastly to contemplate!!!!
Ricardito2/8/2010 6:21 PM
Clearly Reynard you don't understand cricket and the meaning of just great reverse swing bowling....Well done to another Steyn in S.A. Sport and to the fighting spirit of all the Proteas on and off the field. Tendulkar, is the BEST around and it will take another good effort to blow India back to the basics of Cricket. Just keep on playing good cricket and keep your head on the ground...
Jimbo2/8/2010 5:31 PM
shows - you can be a lethal bowler and a nice guy. Morne Morkel is another decent guy. You both make us proud .
Tracey2/8/2010 5:31 PM
This is only the start of the series. What has happened before can well happen again. Win the first and lose all the rest.
Reynard2/8/2010 5:11 PM
Please! Comparing dale styne playing for a pathetic team against india somewhere in a dust-bowl to a rugby world cup winning drop goal. absurd. Was this article made to make the SA public angry? Get a life - How many people watched wilkinson vs Styne. I get the analogy but lets not get ridiculous.
Fred2/8/2010 4:58 PM
You do Jonny Wilkinson a grave diservice. If Jonny Wilkinson only kicked with his right boot, he would still be one of the worlds best! The comparison is only made because with his left boot he is a candidate for the best ever.

Dale for president.
Gemsbok2/8/2010 4:46 PM
Brilliant Dale!! You make us proud. It is far better to let the ball do the talking - show them, dont tell them. Keep up the good work.
@John2/8/2010 4:33 PM
Parnell got the breakthrough - Sehwag who with over 100 runs to his name could have hurt us...much respect to Dale, fine effort all round...
Pieter (I love rugby) 2/8/2010 4:11 PM
It appears that we have another king Steyn, in addition to Morne, in our bragging rights!!!
Roy2/8/2010 4:07 PM
Rob, put a foot in it... Dont put the cart before the horse...and let Steyn and others first win the match! Series and be No1. They can... Then lets all sing and dance!
Highlander2/8/2010 4:05 PM
Congratulations to Dale Steyn, truly brilliant bowling! Kudos to Steyn and the SA brains trust for realising that to be successful on the sub-continent as pace bowlers requires guile, subtlety and skill to go along with natural pace. Fantastic effort to follow up on the batting performance of Hashim Amla, Jacque Kallis, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher. Still a lot of work for the bowlers to do over the next day or so, but if they can bowl well in tandem and apply concerted pressure, it should be a big win for SA.
Boet2/8/2010 4:04 PM
Go Dale, you beauty! I like this part: "A sign of his burgeoning nous, in his 37th Test, was that he basically let the ball do the talking" From the rest of that paragraph, it seems that Mr Houwing meant to say that he let the ball do the WORK, but the good thing would be if Dale started to keep his mouth shut and actually let his bowling do the talking! Can I just say as an unsophisticated simpleton that I am sorry to hear about his nose swelling up in his 37th test! Burgeoning nous?!? WTF, dude? Please keep it real! English, please!
FAAN2/8/2010 4:01 PM
Good bowling Dale, who said you need spinners in the sub-continent? Well done guys!
John2/8/2010 3:57 PM
"toe & timber hunter" hahahaha eloquently put my good man! Bowling of the highest calibre and the supporting cast (Parnell excluded) bowled beautifully.
