Gibbs a flawed genius

Arthur Turner

Herschelle Gibbs is a flawed genius who will sadly be remembered for his misdemeanours and not for the great entertainer he has been for South Africa, Western Province and the Cape Cobras.

Gibbs's international career is already under threat because of his age and all indications are that his Test career is over. Will this latest episode be the final nail in his international coffin?

Gibbs’s career has been a litany of problems that started in the West Indies in 1992 when he was a member of the South African Schools team and was nearly sent home for similar behaviour by the manager, the late Jackie McGlew.

Since then he has been involved with many incidents that have embarrassed South African cricket and himself. These include the Steve Waugh catch in the 1999 Cricket World Cup, the match fixing scandal, dagga smoking in the West Indies and many drinking incidents including recently being caught for drunken driving.

The question must be asked how long is a piece of string and for how long will Cricket South Africa be prepared to tolerate this behaviour.

This type of behaviour and attitude needs to be rooted out of the team. There are already question marks and perceptions after the England tour round the team’s fitness and Sports Illustrated carried a story about binge drinking during the last World Cup in the Caribbean. There are also unconfirmed reports that the former conditioning coach resigned his position because of these problems.

CSA and the team management need to rid the team of these negative perceptions once and for all, therefore, they need to take a strong stand on this issue.

Fantastic opportunities

He needs to be given an ultimatum that if he transgresses again he will play no further part in the national team. The national players’ are role models for the country and earn huge sums of money from the game, he needs to start taking responsibility for his actions. He also needs to respect the game that has created such fantastic opportunities for him both as a player and financially.

Duncan Fletcher the former England Ashes winning coach who coached Gibbs at Western Province in the 1990s termed him a genius. Fletcher by virtue of his nature would not term a player a genius if he did not believe it. Also, not many people would disagree with his assessment.

However, when one compares Gibbs’s Test statistics to other players of his era, it tells a different story to Fletcher’s assessment. Gibbs in his career has played in 90 Tests and averages 41.95 compared to Jacques Kallis's 55.46 in a 123 Tests, Matthew Hayden's 52.72  in 97 Tests and Ricky Ponting 58.05 in a 122 Tests.

Gibbs has at least as much talent and probably more than all three of these players. However, the difference is that they are disciplined individuals both on and off the field, they are proud to play for their country and have a hunger to succeed that Gibbs does not possess.

Gibbs as a person does not have a bad bone in his body, but he is an eternal teenager and needs to grow up quickly. If this does not happen, I fear for his future, as we are undoubtedly seeing a human tragedy unfold.

Arthur is a former cricket administrator and current player agent.

i always regarded gibbs as extraordinary player and rate him more than sachin. sachin and lara have played mostly in flat pitches in the sub-continent hence their marvellous averages, and herschelle we all know is being brought up in pitches that are bowler friendly. we will go far to find a batsman that has class, flair and the skill of gibbs. gibbs is an entertainer like lights of sehwag of india, lara west indies and gilchrist aus

Herschelle Gibbs is a player who is brillian in spurts. It is sad but one hallmark of his career has been a lack of consistency. As mentioned earlier his average in comparison to greats like Ponting n Kallis is low. If Ntini could be dropped yet he is more consistent than Gibbs then surely Gibbs can also be dropped. It is just not good enough anymore for us to say that Gibbs is a matchwinner and on his day he will perform, when will that day be?We know not and with players like Amla and McKenzie i think it is time to accept he is in the twilight of his career. I would like to see him offered one more chance and failing that he should be axed-Jason Gillespie (though a bowler) was brilliant in his day yet he got axed when he passed his expiry date.
Neil11/20/2008 11:11 AM
Enough is enough! Gibbs is past his prime, and if form is the governing factor for selection, then he is not going to get in ahead of McKenzie (test) or Amla (1 day) as they have performed, and have remained true to there roles as profossional cricketers through there conduct both on and off the field! They are the incumbents, and are showing good form, and are role models for the next generation of players! Thanks for the memories Hersh, but enjoy Glamorgen!

WE NEED GIBBS PEOPLE - lets not lie to ourselves, Gibbs is a great cricketer and all you's with you harsh remarks will never replace him. Remember how he took us out the biggest embarrasment against Austrailia, thats who he is, and we all drink so what, he story is being talked about because he is a star, some of us have been caught but does anyone know about it. NO - Gibbs is one of us but a greater cricketer than all of us. Bring him back.
Lima11/19/2008 3:26 PM
Just as we all know, there will never be another Herchelle Gibbs in the world, and why not let u party animals have our own sports superstar since i guess everyone that complained abour Herchelles behaviour hasn't done these type of things, yeah right. 79% of us do these type odf things but just haven't been caught as yet, if we have been caught, noby knows why ? because we are not famous like Gibbs, this is more like showbiz and we tend to forget about what he has done for our country in cricket. There have been many times Kallis and Smith have been off form but have they ever been dropped, NO. Mickey Arthur should wake up abit and stop being happy when we beat Bangladesh, be happy when we beat real cricketers like the Aussies and India - WE GOING TO NEED GIBBS I TELL YOU.

he must go.he is a disgrace to SA cricket, and i think he was always allowed to much freedom, and was never punished enough.just the whole hansie scandal alone should have seen him banished from cricket forever, but he was allowed to smoke pot, drink excessively, go clubbing, break curfews, get caught drinking and driving.the man has NO class.SA cricket shouldve chucked him out years ago, and replaced him with someone with less talent, but that respected the game and fans more.shame on gibbs, and SA cricket

Am I the only one who thinks this isn't such a big deal? He broke a curfew, so what? Discipline him and get on with it. If hes good enough and has paid the price for his "crime" then select him again. Look at Andrew Symonds whos is back in the Australian side after his little fishing trip incident. Its just another discipline issue that needs to be dealt with properly instead of being swept under the carpet. No point wasting talent because someone has a problem with discipline. Many great players had drinking problems and they continued to play throughout their careers. Personally, I hope to see him back fit and scoring runs for South Africa
jules11/12/2008 4:38 PM
'Genius' and 'Gibbs' in the same sentence? I'm sure his ex-teachers at bishops would concur. I agree with leonard, his career's in its twilight it's a bit late now. Leave him be. I'm sure his divorce isn't helping either..."
Shane11/12/2008 4:26 PM
Well, I think it was Desmond Haynes ( The great West Indian opening batsmen) who said that forget the Tendulkars and Laras of the world. Herschelle is the most talented player in the world. I am a huge Gibbs fan and no one past or present not even Zulu gave me as much joy as watching Hersch bat, the pure grace, timing, innovation and sometimes brue force he bats with is unparrelled. Have you ever seen any other batsmen in the world tried to sweep Brett Lee? We all remember the 438 game. I agree with Kevin just because he is in the spot light does not mean that he is a saint, Some of our Supreme court justices were court drinking and driving. REMEMBER it is not St. Herschelle or Father Herschelle or any holy name, he is Herschelle Gibbs a batsmen in a sport game. In esscense he is a entertainer so let him do what he does best ENTERTAIN US. Hersch you will be missed for me at least the cricket team even with guys like Jakes and Bouch there nothing can compare to the Joy and the admiration of a GIBBS hundred

Just to chuck in my 20p comment.. Im stuck in the uk at the moment, always reading up on whats happening in the news. I dont think Gibbs did much wrong, yea smoked some some pot, we all have, got drunk and drove his car, we all have.. got divorced, well most ppl do anyways, just becoz he is in the public eye doesnt change the fact that he is still just a normal bloke living a lil something called life.. ...
faithless11/12/2008 2:01 PM
I'm a huge fan of Gibbs. For years I have watched SA matches to see him bat. Single most talented batsman SA has seen in years. But its time for him to go. There is no room for lack of professionalism no matter how good you are/have been/may be. Perhaps he will be able to sort out his life if there isn't cricket to worry about as well. I wish him all the best and thank him for the fantastic performances in green. AND the delivery by ?Jerome Taylor that effectively ended his test career was unplayable by anyone ever. Watch the replays if you get a chance.

Amla has taken to ODI's like a durbanite to the beach... he showed that in england and now against the minnows... his consistancy is what we need in Aus not one big innings and then flop like Gibbs.. and the Amla Smith Partnership has the potential for success given the contrasting styles and Left-Right combination.
Francoise 11/12/2008 9:16 AM
I think the story of Gibbs must be one of the saddest ones in SA sport. Here's a guy with so much talent and probably the best hand eye co-ord not to mention bat speed and he has pissed it away with this. How sad. !!!
Albert11/12/2008 8:32 AM
Gibbs is a brilliant player, but only when it suits him. Even when in form, one always wonders what his contribution is going to be. He seems to deliver 1 or 2 good performances, then he goes into a slump. As you also point out, he will probably be remembered for more for his off-the-field antics. The fact is that there are other talented players available, and they would probably not embarrass the sport as Gibbs does. Gibbs has had his chance, he has had far more opportunities than any average South African has, and he blew them all. Let him go.
CRICKET MADNESS11/12/2008 7:39 AM
There is no more pride to play for South Africa cricket....bring back the Springbok Emblem as well as discipline in the form of Ray Jennings in order to get back on a winning track.

Have a pie Arthur
jules11/11/2008 3:51 PM
Can someone please pass me the same stuff that Arthur Turner is smoking? The same goes for all of you that put the word 'genius' and Gibbs in the same sentence. Ask anyone at Bishops. I agree with Leonard, it's really too late now at this stage of his career. Also, it seems this divorce is something more than the 'genius' can handle at this point.
Smanga Zulu11/11/2008 1:26 PM
Repeat offenders do just that - they repeat offences. He MUST go and open a pub!! South Africa is full of [young] talent...
Anonymous User11/11/2008 1:16 PM
They must do what they did to Makhaya during his rape trial... there must be no room for favouritism and hypocrisy. Unfortunately in this world you are only as good as your last act.
Anonymous User11/11/2008 12:29 PM
He was brilliant, but now he struggles to get runs, doesn't know where his off-stump is and has forgotten how to be proffessional. It even started way back in the Caribbean when he was caught smoking green stuff, and then even the Indian police were interested in questioning him.
moegamat 11/11/2008 12:23 PM
Gibbs should sort out his issues and get back into the SA squad, he is the most exciting batsmen in world cricket, together with Sehwag, and he still has lots to offer
Shiraan11/11/2008 12:20 PM
I really feel that Gibbs still has alot to contribute to SA cricket, and shoul dbe given that chance. We all know rthat he has some discipline problems which he will hopefully be able to sort out before the tour of Australia. He is the most exciting batsmen to watch in world cricket an dit would be a shame to lose him now. I watch cricket to see him bat
GeePMB11/11/2008 11:22 AM
There is a saying that 'it is harder to be dropped from the Proteas than it is to be selected" and there is no finer example than Gibbs. yes he is a talented player and yes he has deserved his place in the side but he has brought the game, his team and his country into disrepute by his continued transgressions. Frankly, he has had too many warnings and has been given the benefit of the doubt to often. There are other talented genuis's waiting their turn to play in the national set-up and who must be given the chance to prove their mettle. Sure he has won us games with brilliant batting and fielding BUT has also cost us more games than I care to remember with his nonchalant attitude. (He dropped the World Cup by trying to be cocky). Alcoholism is a disease and Gibbs appears by all accounts to be sliding into that abyss and needs help but, he also needs to admit he needs help. So let him go to rehab and recover but it's time to leave him out of our national teams once and for all. Give someone else a chance to be a national hero!
Anonymous User11/11/2008 11:18 AM
Chase him away,He wont change. No dicipline in the team now,get Ray Jennings back to bring them back to earth. If not watch the aussies eat us for breakfast.
chez11/11/2008 11:10 AM
Must agree with jacojvr to a point. Lets worry less about Gibbs and more about getting people to the grounds. The sport is becoming eletist in that without dstv, one cannot watch domestic cricket. Compare the hype and advertising with the currie cup. Who knows (or cares) what domestic games are on now? There are more important things the media and CSA should be gabbing on about! Oh, and by the way, I think Gibbs will be remembered for his talent and great spirit he brings to the game. Thats whats important. You have a lot of fans who support you Gibbs, hang in there.
jacojvr11/11/2008 10:56 AM
may i ask - does cricket SA even notice that there are almost no spectators at the games - who cares what Gibbs does
Gary11/11/2008 10:47 AM
Agreed he is a flawed genius but I disagree that he'll be remembered only for his bad behavior. Who'll ever forget that riveting knock in the 400 plus game at the Wanderers? Who'll forget the sometimes lazy, perfectly timed cuts the boundaries? What about the first class debut at the age of 16? Have read fellows.... http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/southafrica/content/player/45224.html
Leonard 11/11/2008 10:42 AM
All a bit late now, being at the end of his career. He should have been kicked out after the match fixing affair - there is little point getting harsh with him now.
wendy11/11/2008 10:28 AM
I totally agree with Arthur. Gibbs needs to to get his act together and grow up,otherwise he is doomed professionally and health-wise.
Martin11/11/2008 10:02 AM
Agreed, a team needs to have a discipline and team mebers need to commit to that and abide by it. But the team is riddled with transgressors - why is Gibbs singled out? The conditioning coach can testify to that, he quit because many more players were guilty. There have been rumblings of cliques/ favoritism/ bingeing within the team led by senior players of which nothing was done. I smell a rat?
Colin 11/11/2008 10:01 AM
Genius is almost always flawed! The thing about a genius is that he tries to always break out of what he percieves as stifling rules designed to make him conform to something he is not so take the stupid rules away. What a genius needs is to be allowed to work with what he knows best. Maybe it isn't the same as what the majority percieves as best but it is best for him. By forcing Hersch to conform you only suppress his genius. Jake White allowed Schalk Burger to go out for a few beers every now and again because he saw that stifling his gregarious nature stifled his immense ability on the pitch... We are not all the same, we are not all robots!
colin11/11/2008 9:53 AM
Arthur your assessment of Gibbs as a cricket player is a bit harsh - we must also take into account how many times Gibbs were dropped from the side as a result of bad form and he had to go back to the domestic competition to regain form - other players like Kallis and De Villiers and also Smith who have gone through long spells of lack of form have never been dropped from the test side which according to me is a clear double standard - Kallis had a bad start to his test career but SA cricket always believed in him - I believe if past coached had the same believe and presented the same level of loyalty towards Gibbs he would have been a much better test player with a better Average - Gibbs is the 3rd highest runs scorer in test cricket and his average is better than De Villiers, Hansie, Kepler, Johnty, Hudson and Pieter Kirsten just to name a few.
Anonymous User11/11/2008 9:42 AM
Geez i think people are too strict. If fitness is the issue, then boucher, smith, kallis all need to be fired. graeme pollock has the same view, that these players are so pressed to these fitness regiments that they bound to breakdown. and graeme pollock was no fitness buff.
